this is gonna sound well stupid, but i just got the game, and i can't figure out how to tag a character in.
i press L and/or R and the partner jumps in hits em and runs off -------------------

You have to press the LP+LK buttons simultaneously to tag in partner 1 (first one below active fighter) or MP+MK simultaneously for partner 2 (second one below when all 3 are still on your team). If you press what would be HP or HK normally you call in your partner for an assist, where they do an attack or something to help you but it leaves them vulnerable to attacks.
