One Piece influence |

Has anyone seen the excellent anime that is One Piece? Well I just wanted to know which was made first, SoA or One piece because I think one cleary took inspiration from the other.

The only connection I see is the pirate theme, which is far too generic to say one was influenced by another.
Characters are different Plot is different Abilities are different Setting is different (One Piece on water, SOA in the sky) Perhaps if you said why you think they are similar I could better understand your viewpoint. -------------------

Well for a start they both star a cocky young lad who dreams of achieving greatness, they both feature bad tempered red heds, they both try and find crew members, both feature exaggerated characters, like you said they are both based around the theme of pirates, hell they both even feature the main character saving someone about to be executed! A lot of this is just what you get in anime but it doesn't stop the fact that there are similarities. As for the different moves, well I didn't say they were completely identical.

All you've described is a bunch of clichés. SOAL does fit nicely along the anime/manga style, but consider where Overworks is based. Japan, the home of anime and manga.
It's not just One Piece. It's not just SOAL. Those clichés are present in many anime and RPGs (aside from the pirate theme). -------------------

quote Insanity PrevailsI suppose your right. I did say that a lot of this is common in anime and that there are similarities regardless but my original point was that one may have been influenced by the other. As there are so many animes/ manga/ games based around these themes it was probably niave to say that the two are directly related.

The problem is that developers can't really come up with an original theme anymore. At some point someone's already done it (perhaps with a few rare exceptions).
It's entirely possible Overworks didn't actually try to draw inspiration from anime, but the style they used simply resembled that style. Of course, that's not to say the possibility that they've watched too much anime and it naturally affected their ideas, but rather that we cannot know for sure as it's really a theme to expect from an Eastern developer. -------------------

To kill the argument entirely here - SoAL was originally on the dreamcast some time aroun 96/97 - way before One piece was even in the development stages.
Skie's came first - 'nuff said. ------------------- quote Scott Cee
