Pokémon 101 (Frequently Asked Questions)

This has been ported from Ruby, to help with all the question threads this forum gets. I've created this thread to answer all major questions. This means if someone asks a question, there is an answer easily available for you to give them. If you don't want to wade through all the info to look for an answer to your question, hold down [ctrl] and press [f] Then you can search for a keyword relating to one question .If you feel a question should be added to the FAQ, then feel free to post it in this thread. Anyway, on with the FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How do i catch Rayquaza?
A: After beating the Elite 4, travel to Pacifidlog city. You can get there by exiting route 128 to the south and following the sea to the west. To the northeast of Pacifidlog you will see a gap in the rocks (this gap is not there before you beat the Elite 4). Follow this gap to a dungeon. Make sure you have the Mach Bike. As you travel up the tower you will see weak floors. You have to ride the mach bike over these very fast, or they will drop you to the floor below. Once you reach the topof the tower, you will encounter Rayquaza at lv 70. Make sure you have suitable pokemon and pokeballs to deal with him (he's dragon/flying type).

Q: How do i catch Latias?
A: First you must have beaten the Elite 4. Then, watch any of the TVs in people's houses around Hoenn (except the one your mother watches, as that one doesn't listen to the Hoenn News), and you will hear a report saying "a large creature has been seen flying accross Hoenn". This is the trigger for the release of Latias into the wild. After this, Latias will move around Hoenn, as the legendary dogs did in G/S/C. When you encounter them they will run first turn, so have a pokemon with Mean Look, or an ability that prevents fleeing. Then wear them down as you would any other pokemon, being aware that if you make them faint they will be gone forever. If it escapes before you catch it, don't panic. It will be as damaged as you left it when you last encountered it.

Q: How do i cath the Reji Trio?
A: First, you require: a Relicanth, a Wailord, a pokemon with Surf, a pokemon with Dive, a pokemon with dig, and a pokemon with fly. Go to Pacifidlog town and surf to the west. Keep quite close to the bottom of the route. Eventually (if you picked the right subroute) you'll get to a patch of water you can dive in. Dive down and follow the path to the text carved onto a rock. Use dive again to surface. Walk to the back of the cave where some braille is inscribed on the wall. use dig here and walk through the hole made by it. Position Relicanth as your first pokemon and Wailord as your last, and press on the inscription at the back of the room. If done correctly you'll hear the sound of rocks shifting. Now to get the three Regi's:

Regirock- Go to Mauville, and move north into the desrt. Go to the very south, where you'll see a cave surrounded by small rocks. Enter. Walk to the back of the room, then move right two spaces, then down two, then use strength. The back of the cave will open and you can enter the cave to fight Regirock.

Regice- Go north of Dewford town until you see a small channel splitting off the main route to the west. Follow this to find another cave surrounded by rocks. Enter, read teh braille inscription, and stay viewing the inscription for around 2 minutes. The door will open and you will be able to face Regice.

Registeel- Head west of the safari zone and up the little hill to the far left of the route. Again you will find a cave surrounded by rocks. Go in, stand in the middle of the room, and use fly. The door will open allowing you to access Registeel.

Q: Which starting Pokemon should i choose?
A: It is all down to personal choice. There are however, distinct advantages for new gamers to picking Torchic, who's first evolution can take on the first, second and third gyms with no real trouble, and his stats also compliment his dual type the best.

Q: Where do i get the Coin Case?
A: Go to the Trick House, and move through the mazes until you get a Harbor Mail. Then go tto Mauvile city, and talk to the girl in the house to the right of Game Corner. She will trade you a Coin Case for the Harbor Mail.

Q: How do i beat Gym Leader X?
A: There is no defined way to deal with Gym Leaders, but it helps if your pokemon are at least 5 levels above the Gym Leader's highest pokemon, and you're using types that are super effective against the type the Leader uses. Here are the types you will face in each gym, so you can decide which types to use against them:

Rustboro Gym- Rock Types
Dewford Gym- Fighting Types
Mauville Gym- Electric Types
Lavaridge Gym- Fire Types
Petalburg Gym- Normal Types
Fortree Gym- Flying Types
Mossdeep Gym- Psychic Types
Sotopolis Gym- Water Types

Q: How do i beat the Elite 4?
A: Again, there is no set way to beat them apart from using stronger pokemon than they do, and using super-effective moves. The types they use are:

Member 1- Dark Types
Member 2- Ghost Types
Member 3- Ice Types
Member 4- Dragon Types
Member 5- Steel, Ground, Rock

Q: How do i get to Mirage Island?
A: To get to Mirage Island you need a Mirage pokemon, or a pokemon with its stats at gender break point. These pokemon appear randomly in the wild as normal pokemon. For a more precise way of checking if you have a Mirage pokemon, please consult SilverStoneTrainer's Mirage Guide.

Q: How do i catch/evolve Feebas?
A: Feebas appears on route 119. Howver, it only appears on six of the water tiles (tile- when you stand in one place, you are standing on one tile, when you move one space you move one tile). Thus you have to fish in each individual tile of water on Route 119. Changing the "in" phrase at Dewford Town Hall randomly changes the location of the six Feebas tiles. Feebas is evolved into Milotic by feeding it high-level Beauty pokeblocks until the pokemon cannot take any more. If the 'blocks were of a high enough level the Feebas will evolve into Milotic.

Q: What is Pokérus?
A: Pokérus is a disease that infects a small percentage of wild pokemon. When you encounter one of these pokemon, your own pokemon will catch the disease for a short period of time. While the pokemon has the virus, it will collect double the number of EVs it normally would, letting the stats of an infected pokemon grow much more quickly. After a few days, the virus will clear up, and your pokemon will return to normal.

Q: What are Shiny pokemon?
A: Shiny pokemon are pokemon that are differently coloured to regular pokemon. They are very rare (barring the Red Gyrados in GSC, which was available to everyone), with roughly a 1 in 8000 chance of catching one. When a shiny pokemon appears it will be surrounded by stars, and will make a small "ping" noise.

Q: What are the uncatchable pokemon in Sapphire?
A: The uncatchable pokemon in Sapphire version are:
Seedot
Nuzleaf
Shiftry
Solrock
Zangoose
Groudon

Q: How do i evolve my Kingdra?
A: Kingdra evolves when traded while holding a Dragon Scale, which can be found on wild Bagons and Horseas.

Q: Why does my Wurmple sometimes evolve into Cascoon and sometimes into Silcoon?
A: Wurmple will evolve into either Cascoon or Silcoon depending on the Wurmple's nature and gender.

Q: What is STAB?
A: If a move is used by a pokemon of the same type as the move, the moves power will be increased by 50%. For example an Aerial Ace attack used by a Slaking will have a base power of 60, but an Aerial Ace used by a Xatu will have a base power of 90 (60+50%). This is known as Same Type Attack Bonus, or STAB.

Q: How many recordable trainers are there in the game?
A: There are only 69 recordable trainers in the game.

Q: Right, i've finished Hoenn, how do i get to Kanto and Johto?
A: You don't. Kanto and Johto are not in the game, evem if you use a cheat device. If you want to revisit the pokélands of old you'll need to get out your copy of RYBGSC.

Q: How do i get Jirachi and Deoxys?(Japanese)
A:Jirachi- Have an Altaria in the 1st spot in your team. Go on top of the tower where you find Rayquaza. There is a small crack in the floor near where he was. Fall into it, you will find an item called Purity Flute. Get the flute and fall through the other cracks, after 5 floors you will be in the basement of the tower. There is a shrine where Jirachi is. Stand in front of the shrine. Use the Purity Flute, then you will hear your Altaria singing. Jirachi will come out, he is at level 50. He isn't carrying any items.

Deoxys- Have a Solrock and Lunatone in your team. Solrock has to be in the 1st spot and Lunatone has to be in the 6th. Go to the strange white rock in Mossdeep City, there will be an item called a Infinity Key. Get the key, go in the Spaceport, there will be some stairs to the launch pad. There will be Deoxys standing there, he is at level 70. He will be holding an item called Space Rock, which doubles his special attack and special defense.

Q: How do I get Jirachi?(English)
A:North America: To get Jirachi, you must download it from the Bonus Disc when you pre-ordered Pokčmon Colosseum. Otherwise, you'll just have to resort to another method.

Europe: To get Jirachi, get Pokčmon Channel and get to the point where you meet Jirachi and watch the Pokčmon Movie, the full version in the night sky. Afterwards, you are able to download Jirachi into your game.

Q: What is Southern Island and how do i get there?
A: Southern Island is an island where you can catch Latias (Ruby version only) or Latios (Sapphire version only) at Lv50 and holding a Soul Dew item. You can only reach Southern Island if you have an Eon Ticket. Eon Tickets are only available via cheat machines, and by visiting either an Eon Tour that travels across America, or by visiting the Pokemon Center in New York. Both have machines that will allow you to download an Eon Ticket. Alternatively, issue 173 of Nintendo Power came with a free e-card containing Eon Ticket data, which requires an e-reader. When you have the Eon Ticket, go to either of the ports (Slateport or Lilycove) and catch a boat to the Southern Island. Full guide located here.

if you have the japanese version, after defeating the Elite 4, go visit your Dad. He will give you the Eon Ticket. Then go to the ferry in Slateport and flash the Eon Ticket. The Ferry will then go to Southern Island where you can catch Latios in Sapphire and Latias in Ruby.

Q: What is a bad egg?
A: A bad egg is an egg that has been created using a GameShark or other cheat machine, but has been caught by an in-built defense against cheat codes. The egg will never hatch, as it has been disabled.

Q: How do I get the 5 paintings for the museum?
A: Beat the Master Rank Contest Hall twice for one area (Cute, Cool, Smart, Tough, or Beauty), then talk to the Artist to gain a painting. Repeat with the other four contest areas to gain the others.

Q: What are natures?
A: Natures affect a pokemon's max stats, raising one stat's max by 10% and lowering anothers by 10%. For example, a Ludicolo's max speed at Lv100 is 238 and it's max Sp Attack is 278. But if it had a Jolly nature, which raises Speed at the cost of Sp Attack, it's best speed woult be 261 (10% higher than usual) and it's max Sp Attack would be 250 (10% lower than usual). Different natures affect different stats. Here's a list of natures and how they affect stats:

Adamant (+Attack, -Sp Attack)
Bold (+Defense, -Attack)
Brave (+Attack, -Speed)
Calm (+Sp Def, -Attack)
Careful (+Sp Def, -Sp Att)
Gentle (+Sp Def, -Defense)
Hasty (+Speed, -Defense)
Impish (+Defense, -Sp Att)
Jolly (+Speed, -Sp Att)
Lax (+Defense, -Sp Def)
Lonely (+Attack, -Defense)
Modest (+Sp Att, -Att)
Mild (+Sp Att, -Def)
Naive (+Speed, -Sp Def)
Naughty (+Attack, -Sp Def)
Quiet (+Sp Att, -Speed)
Rash (+Sp Att, -Sp Def)
Relaxed (+Defense, -Speed)
Sassy (+Sp Def, -Speed)
Timid (+Speed, -Attack)
Bashful (+Nothing, -Nothing)
Docile (+Nothing, -Nothing)
Hardy (+Nothing, -Nothing)
Quirky (+Nothing, -Nothing)
Serious (+Nothing, -Nothing)

Q: Where do i find Bagon?
A: Bagon is located in the very bottom area of Meteor Falls. They are found only in the room where you find the Dragon Claw, and you need waterfall to get there.

Q: How do I unlock the 8th city gym door?
A: First, you have to find the hidden cavern, by using dive, search the ocean floor and you'll find it. Beat it, and unlock the capability to having Kyogre move to the Cave of Origin. Once you are directed to the cave of origin, beat/catch Kyogre, and then the gym door will be unlocked.

Q: How do I cross the holes in some secret bases?
A: You must go to the Lilycove Dept Sale (advertised on TVs around Hoenn after beating the Elite 4) and purchase Solid Boards. These can be placed over the holes and you can then walk across.

Q: Where do I find Chimecho?
A: Chimecho is found on the outside part of Mount Pyre (near the location where the Orbs are held). They are extremely rare though, so you may have to search for some time.

Q: What is the NationalDex and how do I get it?
A: To get the NationalDex, which is basically a pokedex with info on all 386 pokemon, not just the RuSa 202, you just need to trade a non-RuSa pokemon from FireRed or LeafGreen to your RuSa cart. That will open up the new 'dex for you.

Q: What is the Rocket launch count for?
A: The rocket launch count tells you how many weeks you have been playing for (one rocket is launched every week). It serves no other purpose.

Q: Can we clone Pokémon in this game?
A: No. Cloning is not something you can do in this game. That only worked for R/B/Y versions.

That's the FAQ as far as it goes... if you've spotted any glaring ommisions please feel free to post them in this thread (note- this is not a general help thread, please do not actually ask questions here).

In the Station theres a Scientist-looking man, which tells how many rockets are succesfully launched.

My question: What is an Enigma Berry?

I believe it is some unusual berry that can only be gotten when you swipe an e-reader card in an e-reader that is linked to Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. It doesn't make good poke'blocks.

re: Pokémon 101 (Frequently Asked Questions)

Ok. I've recently heard that if given to a pokemon, when its hp falls under 1/3, it raises a random stat (a bit like Liechi, Petaya and the other stat-raising berries.

Ask any questions! I'll try to answer. Just post 'em here instead of creating new threads.

ŁD!T: I have another question that i cannot myself answer: What does Memento do? i want more information than just: User dies and lowers opponents stats. I mean more accurate information.

re: Pokémon 101 (Frequently Asked Questions)

I was wondering about the national pokedex...
I have some Gold/Silver pokemon from collosseum on my cart but there is no National Pokedex. Does it HAVE to be a Red/Green one? Also, when i do get the National pokedex, will it remember which collosseum monsters have been on my cart?

The NATIONALDEX is only obtained through trading with FR/LG. It will, however, update with your PC Pokémon as well.
