[PC] In-Game Gameplay Recorder |
|
So apparently, I just found out about an in-game command that will record your entire gameplay for a single map, as well as continuing maps afterwards.
From what I've gather, simply start the game, and open the command console. Type in: "Record [NAME HERE]" *"[NAME HERE]" can be anything you want. The game will start to record everything for that map on a .DEM file. It will stop recorded once either you change maps or exit the game. If you continue to another map or change, it will stop the recording of the first map and then record the second map as a separate file. The name of the next file will be the same as what you originally named the first file, but will have a "_2" added on. Simply enough, further files will have "_3" and "_4" respectively. To play these files, you simply have to open the command console in the main menu and type in "playdemo [NAME HERE]" *[NAME HERE] is the name of the file which you chose to name before. It will load up that game and act just like when you're an infected which is dead, only if won't have the orange colour overlay or respawn counter. It'll look just like what it does when you play (without the HUD I assume) except you won't be able to control your character. From what I can tell, you can edit the game to a degree, such as slowing down the speed with "host_timescale" but probably not things such as spawning enemies or weapons. Amazing. Did anyone else know this? This message was edited by Machienzo on Mar 28 2009. -------------------

Oh, well it works differently to fraps. It doesn't actually screen record, but records all the action in the entire game.
And yes, it works perfectly. -------------------

It basically makes it like spectator mode when you view it after recording. I have yet to try it out though and basing this off of what Machi has told me.

How could you guys not know this? This is basic knowledge in the Steam commmunity. All games that use the Valve console have the capability of recording demos. They serve lots of purposes. Competitive clans will watch demos of other teams to see strategies, etc. When film recording you can use the demo smoother which allows you to pan a camera around in the demo for some cool shots. You can record a demo in every game and just go back using fraps to record the good parts for your video, etc. It's different from fraps because it doesn't use any resources so it won't lag you at all. It's not an actual movie file though. As in you have to actually own the game and be in it to watch it... until someone records it.

Because not everybody goes through the list of hundreds of server commands when they get a Valve game . The record function doesn't record everything as a movie, it records what all the objects are doing, so you can watch later. You cannot view these 'movies' using any type of media player, or convert them. They are not video files. You could use Fraps to make video files, fut the upside to using record is it does not cause any lag. ------------------- ![]()

Ooo, thanks for mentioning that born2be. I'm checking up on that Demo smoothing thing right now.

quote LorxActually, although using the technique above does not create a video file, you can create one (an AVI) by typing startmovie "moviename" avi. It will go through the whole movie, but with some lag. This is normal. When it has finished, type endmovie. Then you can open it in a media player, all you have to do is find it in your game folder. I may have missed some stuff, but here's the video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s41lcCTs6CQ&feature=related ------------------- This is my signature. Fear it. Credit to Onocron
