Dual Core Fixes

Guide

AMD dual core optimizer

More info

The second link is within the first, but whatever. With the growing amount of dual core purchases, i thought that this might be helpful to some.

re: Dual Core Fixes

Very nice find. I only had the 1.3.1 driver and it will be interesting to see how this Optimizer works with games. I'll probably do a before and after comparison with 3dMark.

Then do a before and after on 3dMark with your RAM @ DDR400.

Really, give us benchmarks of before and after the dual core optimization, then go back to stock clock speeds @ DDR400 and show us what happens. Unless you have DDR333 RAM, then I understand.

Well seeing as at the end of June you tried to help him pick between DDR500 kits it seems he hasn't gotten the chance to do his upgrade past what is likely PC2700 / DDR333 since for the most part PC2100 and PC2700 were always a bit of a pain to overclock especially when trying to jump to DDR400 successfully and having stability and somewhat acceptable timings.

As far as the actual topic at hand, I've used the AMD patch already for BF2 and it fixed the horrible framerates it was doing for me at times, before that I was assigning it to high priority and hoping for the best. Luckily I can go back to plane acrobatics without a problem.

*Topic Floated*

I don't have a dual core processor but I'm pretty sure this topic would be helpful for those who do.

re: Dual Core Fixes

My memory can't go to DDR400 and I unfortunately gambled away the money I had saved for my memory upgrade in a poker game, but I finally found a job. So I'll finally/actually be able to start making some of the upgrades I've been claiming I would make for quite some time.

Back on topic though:
These are the benchmarks before and after the optimization with the % increase in performance. No huge gains or losses, and I don't know if you could even attribute the differences to the optimization. I am running x64 so that could play a difference.

3dMark06: 1454 >>> 1441 >> .89% decrease (a slideshow would have had better frame rates)

Sandra05 Arithmetic:

Whetstone: 10236 >>> 10250 >> 0.13% increase

Sandra05 Multimedia:

Floating Point: 55107 >>> 54888 >> .39% decrease

re: Dual Core Fixes

Hmm.. Ive noticed some VERY odd behavior in games like Unreal Tournament and Empire Earth ever since i went to dual core. The overall game speed can fluctuate wildly from normal to exceedingly fast. Makes for a real pain when trying to play on multiplayer (goes out of sync and disconnects). From the description, It seems like the optomizer posted above might clear up this timing freakout thing. Gonna try it now.
THX!

EDIT: Hahaha the "Benny Hill Effect" Thank god thats over with.. I uninstalled 3 of my games becuase of that little annoyance..

re: Dual Core Fixes

Question...

Apart from weird "Benny Hill effects"... Are dual core processors ok with games? Specifically older games? I'd like to use older windows 98 and 95 games, using a multiboot and hard drive partitioning. I'm just checking so I dont end up regretting buying the new pc. Will the dual core processor stop me using anything, or will things be ok as long as I install the correct Windows version?

re: Dual Core Fixes

Dual core is only used when the program is written for dual core. Besides that, anything that was written as a single core application will only run on core 0, or core 1 if you set the affinity different(if applicable).

re: Dual Core Fixes

Ah...

So, if I used a game which was made before dual core, would the pc basically use one core for the game and one for the operating system?

The game written on one core will use one core. Whether or not it is the same core that the OS is using, I'm not sure. I imagine that the OS could dictate it's affinity where needed, but like I said, I'm not sure.
