level up system

Hi, Im considering getting this game but theres only one thing holding me back, the level up system.
How does it work? I hope its NOT like elder scrolls oblivion where the enemies level with you and can sometimes overtake you. Im use to level grinding on final fantasys and that kinda thing.
any help would be much appriciated
many thanks
Gazz

re: level up system

This plays very much like prior Bioware titles. Imagine Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic mixed with Neverwinter Nights. This kind of RPG differs from JRPGs in that levelings effects range out into customizing character capabilities, and dont grant a general boost to a set of predetermined stats. You level up once, for example, and you get 15 more hp, and opt to increase damage for your off hand weapon, making it more effective to dual wield weapons in combat. You also enhance your skill at bartering. That's it.

Where as usual in JRPGs, in one level up you raise max hp, mp, strength, intelligence, agility, defense, and possibly learn a pre determined spell for that particular level up.

More strategy involved with DA's gameplay/leveling style & more customization. Enemies also appear to be set to predetermined levels, as w/prior Bioware RPGs. Havent gone too far into the game, so cant be sure, though theres many recognizable designs of Bioware lineage.

re: level up system

You kill, you level up, you gain 1 talent point, 3 attribute points and every 2-3 levels (rouges gain a skill point every 2 levels), a skill point.

When you get to level 7, you may (provided that you've unlocked said specialization with a trainer or manual) choose a specialization which consists of 4 new (but powerful) abilities that you must meet the level requirement and have 1 talent each to use.

The level cap is 25.

re: level up system

many thanks, but I meant more along the terms of basically, can you level up when you want before progressing the story, thus always staying ahead of the enemies difficulty? I am a newbie to this sort of game as my background in RPGs is with final fantasys, although I had oblivion but got rid of it because of the awful 'enemies level up with you and can get better than you' levelling design.
thanks again

re: level up system

Once you gain sufficient EXP, you can level up as long as you're not in a battle.

I'm not sure if enemies level with you or not. I know that Humanoid enemies (Bandits, Darkspawn, Mercs, etc...) do have leveled equipment though

Any early areas in the game where you can farm enemies for XP. I need to level desperately.

If you have XBL, then it has probably been patched by now though.

re: level up system

Wow that freakin awesome. Unfortunately I'm already past that area by a considerable amount. I'm also playing this on PS3 so it should by doable if i make another character. One question though. Is 20 the level cap?

That's the level cap, if Kommando is correct.

I don't really see how level grinding would help too much aside from the additional talents/spells. I'm not going to be grinding at all, just going to go through and enjoy the game and the challenge!

re: level up system

I need the levels because I need to get past some enemies who are to difficult to handle at my current level. Not to mention the combat is kind of scarce in this game its very heavy handed on story and not much on combat.

re: level up system

i actualy tought it was 20 becouse thats when you get the achievment for your class

Master of Arms (Silver) Main character achieved level 20 as a warrior
Shadow (Silver) Main character achieved level 20 as a rogue
Archmage (Silver) Main character achieved level 20 as a mage

but i could be wrong

The achievement is given at level 20 because of the limited resources of EXP which make it very difficult to reach level 25 by legitimate means.

re: level up system

The exp thing is really grinding my gears now. I've done damn nearly every quest in the game (am about to kick off my campaign against the archdemon) and I'm only level 20.
If there's one thing I detest, it's being stuck at a lower level when there are still spells, abilities and talents that I want to get, and the world has gone dead with no random encounters or minor questing to do.

re: level up system

Agreed. I played through as a Warrior and, although I didn't do the assassin missions, I did everything else and ended up as level 22.

re: level up system

this is slow but it helps a bit
what you do is pick 2 points that are far away and keep traveling between them so you can get into random fights

they should add an arena were you can go and bet money on fights and if you win you double your earnings and get some xp
