Batman: Recommended Reading and Viewing |
|
A thread to recommend specific Batman media you enjoy. Particular episodes? Check. A film? Yup. Short story? That'll work. Novel? Certainly. Graphic novel? Definitely. Comic book? Of course. Manga? Yeah, there is such a thing.
Get the picture? So, give us the title and media format along with perhaps the premise or something about why it is interesting or enjoyable for you. Batman vs. Predator (comic book limited series/graphic novel) Why is it interesting? The manhunter of Gotham becomes the prey for the big game hunter of the cosmos. Batarang meets wrist blade in this one. Batman is forced to deal with a foe who is as relentless as he is. A foe that will not quit until either it or the prey is dead. Batman doesn't kill. Something has to give. ------------------- quote SlackerBooks&Lit Comics Transformers: The Movie Gundam Collectibles

Now that DOES sound pretty cool. Better than Superman vs. Alien...
I want to pick up No Mans Land, I hear good things. There is so much I need to read but don't have the time. -------------------

To be honest; I've never even read Batman vs Predator. I feel ashamed saying that, as I've heard wonderful things. I definitely need to get me a copy.
Anyways, as for something I really like: Gotham Central (Comic Book - 40 Issues) Really good collection of stories that follows the Gotham City Police Department as they work in the city. It's got known characters like Batman (who isn't shown that much), Gordon, and Harvey Bullock, as well as a number of other individuals who make up the GCPD. There are just so many different villains, including the Joker, Freeze, Firebug, Two Face, Mad Hatter, etc. Too many to list, but the stories were so well written and characters were portrayed and defined brilliantly. A definite read for anyone interested in Batman. -------------------

Everyone should of course read The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, as well as Batman: Year One, also by Miller. Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean is also good, and I believe a big inspiration for the upcoming game in some respects. Also, Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore (Watchmen) and Brian Bolland is a great book, probably my all-time favorite Joker tale, and also bears some similarity to the B:AA plot, i.e. Gordon's kidnapping.

Well for anyone interested in picking up some material on
Batman & The Joker for AA, The Killing Joke is an instant favourite (of mine and the fanbase). Critically acclaimed as one of the greatest graphic novels ever made, written by Alan "Watchmen" Moore and follows a more in-depth look at the other sie of the coin, The Joker. His origin of how he came to be is the most interesting yet and provides (some) insight into the master villain's psyche. But i advise to anyone getting the game (who's interested enough) to look into Batman: The Animated Series if they haven't heard of it already (in which case... why?). It goes without saying that it is to date the greatest version of the Batman-universe done on-screen (Be it silver). It is a true groundbreaking cult classic (in the sense of Batman anyway), every character, from Conroy's iconic Batman/Bruce Wayne all the way up to Hamill's irreplacable Joker is portrayed exactly (not to mention excellently) how you feel they should be. Told in the sense of a detective-style narrative mixed with a noir-ish atmosphere it treats the characters with charisma and detail and the voice work is the most iconic, period. They made magic when they created this and it'd be a shame for anyone not already lovingly acquainted with it to miss out before the game. A MUST-BUY!! ------------------- ![]() Over? why, my dear delusional Dark knight... it hasn't even begun...

Yeah, the animated series is great. I even liked the PS2 game Batman: Vengeance that was done in that "Deco" style and used Conroy and Hamill's voices. The game got generally poor reviews, but I enjoyed it.

Lots of love for 'The Killing Joke' as is only right and proper
I recommend 'The many Deaths of the Batman' the various Batman: Hush collections and also Frank Miller's 'The Dark Knight Strikes Again' which is admittedly insane but still streets ahead of most Batman material. ------------------- ![]()

I saw "The Killing Joke" in HMV for £10 and thought "woah, thats a bit much for a comic!" TBH I've never really been arsed about the comics, although I vaguely recall reading a few...
as for viewing I wouldn't mind watching The Dark Knight again. Great film. Anyone who hasn't seen it should give it a go. Also the animated series is awesome... and for shear laughs I recommend the Batman TV show starring Adam West! It's nothing like Arkham Asylum but it is hilarious! -------------------

Batman: Year One is one of my favorites. It tells the tale of Batman and a bit of Gordon from the beginning, decent development and story altogether. Went backwards with it though, as I read Batman: Dark Victory first, which brings in Robin's origins. Both are detailed on each characters' past.
Goes without saying, Batman: The Killing Joke is a definite big one for me as well. -------------------

I read The Killing Joker, and I thought it was excellent, but I have one question. Who the *bleep* is that guy at the end that wants to kill Batman?

The film: The Dark Knight is brilliant, the joker (Heath Ledger) is excellant, and the batman himself is excellant. A must buy.

quote Oogity_Boogity_BooWouldn't the answer to that be a spoiler of some kind? Come to think of it the question itself is a spoiler! Watched the first half of Batman Returns earlier. Michael Keaton as Batman is a bit meh. Penguin and Catwoman are the real stars of that movie IMO. -------------------
