It's a pretty long process.
First, concept. They decide what the game is going to be first. Story plot ideas, concept art, that kind of stuff. Next, they make a game engine. A game engine makes the graphics, and physics. Most games are limited by what the game engine can do. After that, they begin work on making levels, and creating models. It's tons more complicated than how I explain it though. ------------------- ![]() this isn't a link

Interesting choice of topic, and I look forward to more replies as I'm interested in becoming a games developer.

I am too. Although in my final year, I've now pretty much concluded it's not for me. Although that may be due to the horrible tuition we've received from the actual gamey side of the course.

I've told you before Andy. Since my mate is making one, he has a huge production document that is about 100 pages. I've read it several times! He has people working for him and people doing concept art for him. He has set a tentative release date of Christmas 2013, and he started it last year. It is a long, slow and difficult process that you would be mad to do if you had no clue what you were doing...

I wouldn't have a clue myself, but he has been planning for a while now and he still is not up to the stage of actually making the game... It's not simple, you don't just randomly get a program and make a game...

I am studying Information Systems at University, and software development projects, such as games, all start off pretty much the same. Initially there is a planning phase, where the concept is decided upon and goals are defined. Once these goals are defined, a team is assembled (small projects may be managed and created by a single individual) and roles are assigned. The development phase comes next, and I have a feeling this is what you were most curious about. To create a software application you have to have some way of telling the hardware in your computer to behave when certain conditions are met. The simplest and most popular way of taking control of hardware is through a programming language that your CPU is able to interpret and then send the commands on to various hardware units.
Modern programming languages include C++ and C# and can be accessed through an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) such as Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET These programming languages are complex and require intensive study too learn, but are incredibly powerful allowing virtually endless application possibilities. Along with telling the hardware how to behave, you have to come up with a data storage model, or database, and then tell your program how to access this data. Common database applications include MySQL and MS Access. After the software has been compiled through the IDE and database management system, it is tested and implemented on a wide range of systems and if all goes well is release to the public. ------------------- ![]()
