You do not need special units for a good start. It's all about maximizing the number of Villagers and their productivity, i.e., building a powerful economy. From there you can build all the military or special units you want.
Typically, the best start is with building a population of about 20, +/- 1 on a land map. If you can delay boar hunting by finding extra sheep and eating berries, then you can delay Loom until Feudal research. Build another Villager while you build your Stable and Blacksmith. Now proceed to Castle Age and start building your military units. Usually Knights are best. Is this making sense?

well if you play on deathmatch i tend to get to imperial age asap and hav 3 to 4 castles by then
i start with 2 villagers on baracks and 1 on mill while the town center is making 1 villager to help finish building, fuedal age creat some millitias and create houses in the mean time 2 on market and 2 on blacksmith create 1 villager, castle age again build houses and research what is needed in the other buildings. all villagers on a castle and create 2 while doing it, imperial age create a few more castles during this time, create your unique unit, leave 1 castle free after the imperial age is done to research. then i make the units i need to do my best. note this tactic means you are very vunrable at the start
