Why Go MMO?

I think this has been the one major bone of contention for the game which has been vehemently expressed across the net and it certainly has been a point of intent dislike for me.

Why did they decide to go MMO instead of following up with a third RPG? I could understand the problems with making it match previous storylines but there are ways around that, and they still have to deal with those issues by making an MMO.

And the MMO market is already flushed with games to a ridiculous degree. Who wants to see this game come out as an MMO when just about every other game is? This also limits out the consoles to some degree, and most people will want to use a PC to play this game.

Plus, I feel MMOs do not have the same feeling of immersion that you get from playing RPGs.

In any case, thoughts or opinions!

re: Why Go MMO?

To be honest dude, I don't see a huge MMORPG market. I mean, I know it's there. I know there are plenty of MMOs out there, but the only one with a massive amount of players is WoW. Otherwise, I can't think of any huge MMOs that are popular. I'm a casual PC gamer though, so I'm not the best judge. When I see MMOs, I see a bunch with a small cult following that barely keeps the game afloat and then a massive WoW fanbase. That kind of formula leads me to believe a Kotor MMO can work with star wars fans in general looking for a new MMO or Kotor fans.

As far as Kotor making the switch, yeah. It was shocking. But BioWare had mentioned for a long time now their desire to make a MMO, and I guess they decided that Kotor was the universe they wanted to use. They probably didn't want to ditch the franchise due to how popular it was and just decided to kill two birds with one stone.

MMOs definitely lack immersion, but in my opinion, that's just because there hasn't been a BioWare MMO. If anybody can pull it off, I've got the feeling it'll be BioWare. I don't think this'll be some generic MMO where all I want to do is grind to the next level by doing some lame ass fetch a scroll quest. I legitimately see them pulling off some great quests. If the basic way of interacting with NPCs remains the same, this game can be exactly the same as a single player versions - only it's possible to do the quests with multiple people, which sounds like a blast to me.

My main worry though will be some of the great interactions you can have mid-quest like in the single player games. I'm talking about you're inside an enemy base and a waitress runs up to you and pleads for her life, and your response is: "looks like your order is up." In a MMO, I don't know how they can pull it off. Who will be the one to trigger those events? Does everyone pause to view it? Are some quests going to be only soloable so it can be done? One of my favorite parts about BioWare games are the character interactions, and yeah, it could be tough with a MMO. That's possibly the biggest immersion killer - turning some fantastic quests in Kotor that involve talking into boring generic 'just clear the base' grinds. I'm hoping they'll find a way.

I'm all for the switch to MMO. I wasn't into WoW and my MMO of choice for four years has become unbearably boring; I've been desperate for a new MMO and I'm sure this'll be exactly what I need. I say this as a MMO fan who tends to solo in them a lot too - I'm not looking for a massive change to gameplay to force this game into a MMO. I honestly don't think they'll need to sacrifice much from the singe player aspects of Kotor games.

re: Why Go MMO?

You talk about how WoW is the only big MMO out there right now, and that it has millions of players and it's awesome and great and blah blah blah... Now I agree that it's player base is huge but, I think it's time to move on from the MMO empire that is World of Warcraft and let smaller, less known MMOs step up to the plate and have a shot at the big times.

Back on topic, I think that they made the right decision making KOTOR 3 a MMO mainly because it's time to expand the series. What was great about the first two was the sheer amount of freedom they offered. They set in motion a new gaming style which eventually led to gaming giants such as Jade Empire and the Mass Effect trilogy. But if you think about it, we're in a new age of gaming; an online era.

Games that were formerly based on offline single-player and even offline multi-player are still being created today except they have a score of extra content available for download off of the internet. My point being that this new "online era" is the next evolution of gaming.

MMOs are the way of the future and I'm happy that Bioware sees that.

wut?

I just said it was the only MMO I knew of with a large fanbase. That was it. I even ended the post saying I couldn't get in to WoW at all.

re: Why Go MMO?

Well, I wasn't talking about you in general but rather what many MMO players believe. They talk about WoW like it's the greatest thing ever created and it just simply isn't.

I actually don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that first part of my post... but uhh... yeah...

Sorry about that.

re: Why Go MMO?

After reading Kinganubis2's information thread I'm pretty excited because it really allows so many different storylines for the game, and that's a reason they went MMO. It looks like you'll be able to fight out the war on one side whilst also vying for power on that side, plus many back stories. So many different possibilities.

re: Why Go MMO?

I think the reason KotOR went MMO was because of the disappointment with Galaxies. Bioware surely figured they could pull Star Wars fans in hoping for a better game, ever since Galaxies turned to a POS.

re: Why Go MMO?

Part of me would really like a KOTOR 3 but it looks like that won't happen now.

I enjoyed Galaxies, back when it was good, and I'm hoping that TOR can fill that void.

There are a lot of WoW players but we need a game that can rival WoW now. It's not impossible to do.

re: Why Go MMO?

Look man, I agree with you 110%. I've always considered myself a console gamer. However, roughly 15 months ago, I came across a little gem called Guild Wars and ever since I've made loads of online friends, logged over 1,000 hours of gameplay and have had tons more fun then I could have had with a console game.

My point being, I believe that MMOs are the... evolution of video games; the next step to a new era.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that MMOs should be the only games out there, that would be terrible. I'm just saying that after 2 extremely successful games, it's only fair that KOTOR is allowed to evolve.

God I hope not!

Just started playing through KOTOR again and remembered why I love these games so much.

If they can make TOR feel like KOTOR then I'll be happy. As will, I think, a lot of old Galaxies players. The Star Wars franchise deserves a good MMO.

Hopefully there'll be an announcment at E3 that can help shed some much needed light on this subject.

re: Why Go MMO?

Dystopia, I said the market was flushed, which meant that there was a lot of MMOs out on the market, not that they were in particular very popular or successful -- there's just a lot of MMOs being created out there to try and get a chunk of what WoW did.

re: Why Go MMO?

I think the only challenge BioWare has with SW:TOR is to distinguish itself from all the tripe that's flooding the MMO market at the moment, which Mishtram mentioned.

I'm going to be making the switch from WoW to TOR, as are a few friends of mine. I think TOR has a chance at this merely because it's an MMO in the Star Wars universe, and all we can hope for is a large population of fans jumping from their respective MMO ships for a little change in scenery.
