re: Story Of Your Season

I also forgot to post the league table... I'll do it now.

I am considering a SOMS, just with straight forward results etc. I might do it a couple of seasons in though, when a few of my youngsters are coming through.

Lambo and Shea will come to Crewe for free

I'd like to see that, especially if you could get your young side to play nice football and be generally exciting

re: Story Of Your Season

Being the club I support, I thought Arsenal should be the first team manager on this year's version of the game. I have only today completed my first season on the game. I set myself a target of Title Challenge.
Transfers
Firstly, the outs. At the beginning of the season, I had more than enough funds to purchase any players that I needed, so I decided to deal mainly in the youth. I sent out the more promising youngsters on loan for some valuable experience, but sold some of the less promising ones. Later on in the January transfer window, I decided to sell Tomas Rosicky as I was already spoilt for choice in midfield, City were interested and I realised that he was on a par with a lot of my current players and was much older than them all. I felt that the £12m I got for him was a very fair price tag.
Now the ins. I realised that in order to challenge for the title as was my expectation, then I would have to strengthen many areas of my team. Firstly, I thought Rui Fonte was a good prospect and so decided to finalise his loan deal as agreed in the terms of the loan. I then decided that bar Fabregas, none of my midfielders were ready to be in my first team yet, so I signed Miguel Veloso and Joao Moutinho for identical deals of £5m up front and £6m in monthly instalments over the course of 12 months. Also, being fairly unimpressed by Mannone and deeming Almunia too old, I decided to bring in Asenjo and I immediately bled him into the first team. Next I decided that I would need some capable wingers for my tactic, so I decided to bring in Zoran Tosic and Mario Santana, Tosic for £7m and Santana for £5m. These two, however, did not feature as much for me as I had originally planned, due to a change of tactics. I then signed Renato Santos and William Carvalho for a combined total of £100k with the idea of selling them for a large profit a couple of years into the future. Finally, I signed Wagner and Santon, both for the future. Wagner is an impressive regen with a 5 star potential according to my scouts and coaches.

Premier League
Overall, I was very pleased with my performance in the league, especially as I only suffered one defeat. However, I threw away far too many leads for my liking, but was only saved some embarrassment towards the end of the season by Chelsea losing to West Brom and Portsmouth in quick succession, allowing me to break away and Manchester United to catch up and eventually overtake them. The only defeat of the season came away to Newcastle as I beat Chelsea and Liverpool home and away, while drawing at Old Trafford and beating them 3-1 at The Emirates. We had a very strong and stable defence, but a lot of the time my strikers simply refused to get going.

League Cup
The League Cup was my first silverware as Arsenal manager. I enjoyed a very good cup run and knocked out Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on penalties in my first fixture. Things only got easier from there as I knocked out Tottenham, West Brom and Everton in succession, before finally beating Manchester City in the final.

F.A. Cup
I had a much easier cup run in this competition as I did in the League Cup. I started off in the 3rd Round with a 2-0 victory at Aldershot, before progressing to face Leicester away, which I again won by 2 goals to 0. I was again away to West brom in the 5th Round and I again prevailed, and again by winning 2-0. Arguably my toughest tie of the tournament was at home to Chelsea. I won this match, by that scoreline again – 2-0. I finally went out in the Semi-Finals against Portsmouth, who I seemed to find very difficult to beat this season. I crashed out 2-1 and I was understandably disappointed as I was looking forward to facing City in another final.

Champion's League
My pride and joy of the season, European glory. The Qualification round was fairly straightforward against Dinamo Kiev. I achieved a 4-0 victory at home, but lost 2-1 away; meaning I went through 5-2 on aggregate. I started off the competition proper with a group I was always going to get past, it merely depended on whether I cam first or second. The group consisted of Juventus, Anderlecht and PSV. I came top of my group with 6 victories, conceding only one goal in the process. I beat Juventus twice 2-0, Anderlecht 1-0 and 2-0, and PSV 3-1 and 3-0.
I was drawn against Villareal in the Round of 16. I won 4-2 in Spain, before drawing 1-1 in England. I was drawn against Inter Milan in the Quarter Finals and I felt I was extremely lucky to have progressed here. I drew 0-0 in Milan and took a 2-0 lead at the Emirates thanks to a brace from Nicklas Bendtner. They got one back through Mancini and fortunately for me they failed to capitalise further on a poor performance from Asenjo, who scored a measly rating of 4.9 in this fixture. The Semi-Finals were incredibly exciting in my opinion. Drawn away in the first leg against Real Madrid, I knew I couldn't lose the first leg if I wanted to reach the final. Luckily for me, a brace from Eduardo earned me a 2-2 draw. I was incredibly apprehensive going into the second leg, but I managed to secure a 2-1 win, Eduardo and van Persie with the goals.
I was drawn against Manchester United in the Final as they looked to win the competition two years running. I stopped them from achieving this great feat though a 63rd minute goal from Robin van Persie. What made this result sweeter was that I had been on a poor run of form before this match, drawing at Hull and Portsmouth and narrowly beating West Ham.

Key Players

Bakary Sagna
    Games: 58 ~ Goals: 2 ~ Assists: 4 ~ MotM: 4 ~ Av. Rating: 7.35

Gael Clichy
    Games: 57 ~ Goals: 1 ~ Assists: 7 ~ MotM: 6 ~ Av. Rating: 7.25

Kolo Toure
    Games: 58 ~ Goals: 2 ~ Assists: 2 ~ MotM: 2 ~ Av. Rating: 7.22

Next Season
Next season I aim to at least retain all the trophies which I have won, ideally earning those three in addition to the F.A. Cup, Community Shield, EURO Super Cup and World Club Championships. It will be difficult, but with the right signings, I believe I can do it.

If anyone would like to recommend me transfers or would like to request any other screenshots, feel free to do so

re: Story Of Your Season

I played a 4-3-3 formation. Asenjo in goal, Sagna, Clichy, Toure and Gallas at the back, Veloso as a DM, Fabregas and Moutinho in the middle of the park. I had Adebayor, van persie and Eduardo as my strike trio, but for some reaosn they all played really poorly. Bendtner was actually my top scorer of the season with 17 goals

I orginally intended to have that as a home tactic and an away tactic identical, but having one striker and two wingers, but I had some rather poor results with that tactic and so permanently had the above tactic.

And congrats on winning the league

Liverpudlien did as well, maybe it was your tactics and signings just not working together, or having injuries or Torres/Gerrard out?

Most of the draws came at the beginning of the season when I was trying out the away tactic with the wide men when I got most of the draws and then I had a fair few towards the end of the season as well.

As for the goals:
  • Bendtner ~ 17
  • Adebayor ~ 17
  • van Persie ~ 14
  • Vela ~ 9
  • Walcott ~ 8
  • Veloso ~ 8
  • Eduardo ~ 8
  • Fabregas ~ 6
  • Moutinho ~ 5
  • Nasri ~3
  • Sagna ~ 2
  • Toure ~ 2
Ramsey, Denilson, Song, Tosic, Santana, Djourou, Clichy, Gallas, Silvestre and Diaby all got one.

Ah fair enough then, thought you were being amazingly picky ;P

Veloso and Moutinho got a lot for holding midfielders!

FC Basel 2008\2009

...the challenge
I decided to have a go at nufcfan's excellent challenge. FC Basel were the Swiss Champions, so I had a lot to live up to. I wanted to retain the title, trim the squad and hopefully have a run in Europe. The eventual challenge was to win the Champions League, but that was a long way away. I was given just £1.5m to spend and was told that the league was a minimum requirement.

...the squad
It wasn't a bad squad. Plenty of youth and a couple of good older players. It needed a bit of shaking up but nothing serious.

The main players were a couple of good keepers and the experience midfielder, 30 year old Huggel. Streller was a big, traditional target man with superb finishing and composure. I decided to utilise this as my main tactic. The squad suited a quick tempo, playing with a lot of width in order to supply Streller with the chances he needed.

...the transfers
First thing's first, I needed to have a good look at my squad. In the summer I decided against making huge changes until I had reassesed the squad. With limited funds, I spent the majority of my budget on Razvan Ochirisii. He was a great prospect and would supply my target man.

I also signed a number of loans to boost the squad. Alex Song from Arsenal would be useful in Europe when I was defending a lead, and Darren Gibson added numbers to midfield. Heider Helguson from Bolton was a great backup to Streller. He was strong in the air and great at heading.

The final signing was youngster Fabio Daprela. He was a great prospect at full back, strong in the tackle and good at crossing. I signed him for 900k.

I recieved a little bit of cash from selling Scott Chipperfield for 625k. He was getting on and was surplus to requirements. Markus Gelabert went out on loan for a 130k fee and Almereras was also sent out on loan.

...the cups
After breezing past Dinamo Tblisi in the second champions league qualifying round, I was then soundly beaten 4-1 on aggregate by Galatasary and dropped into the UEFA Cup. Wins against Timerisora and St Etienne in the group stage sent me through but I was soon knocked out 6-1 on aggregate by Olympiakos in two shocking performances.

The Swiss Cup was a disaster, I was beaten in the last minute by Zurich in the Quarters in January. This result sent my team into a spiral and saw me knocked out of Europe and go 5 games without a win in the league.

...the transfer window
Lot's needed to be done in January. Immediately my board sold my star striker Derdiyok, who had hit form with 10 goals in his last 10 games. The £7m I got for him was a lot though, and I tried to put it to good use. A number of other fringe players were also sold and I set about bringing some faces in.

I wanted to buy Swiss and started with 22 year old Jonathan Vonlanthon from Salzburg. He paid too much at £5.6m but I was pleased to have a striker with a bit of pace.

Fabian Delph was a bargain at just £1m. He'll be a great player in a few years and boosted my midfield options with Song and Gibson struggling to settle into the team.

My final big signing was for young Swiss defender Heinz Barmettler. He was highly rated by my scouts and provided good cover for the impressive Marque and inconsistant Abraham.

..the league
So where did that leave me in the league? After a slow start, Streller and Derdiyok fired me into an early lead. Helguson was grabbing his fair share of goals as well and things were looking good. I was ahead by 7 points at halfway and I was sailing.

But, I then drew 4 home games in a row and lost to rivals Zurich. They went on a winning run and my direct, wide football didn't seem to be working. Vonlanthon was struggling to score and I crashed out of both cups. I went from a 7 point lead to being behind by 2 points.

Luckily my form picked up, and a matchwinner from Huggel against Young Boys put us and Zurich equal on points with 4 games to go. I never looked back, winning the next three and sealing the title as Zurich slipped up.

We were champions! Just. I had £5m in the bank to continue the rebuilding and have a crack at the Champions League next season. It was enjoyable, but frustating at times and much tougher then I imagined.

...the stars
I didn't get manager of the year, but Sommer, Daprela, Marque, Hoggel and Streller all got in team of the season. Helguson was my favourite signing, scoring hugely important goals when needed.

Ochirisii did well on the left, setting up plenty of goals and even Vonlanthon settled in eventually.

Unemployment Challenge - Season 1 2008\2009
Brazilian 3rd Division - Rio State

...my team
I thought I'd go for a change, so I loaded up the major leagues and Brazil. I added my Luxembourg manager (I will be the first to win the Champions League with a Luxembourger) and checked out the jobs. There are about 80 teams in the Brazilian 3rd division, and 4 group stages before promotion. As I had started in July, the first group stage was already 5 games in and I chose Boavista (Rio) to manage. They were 5th, but one place off the top two and qualification for the next stage.

...the transfers
I didn't have any cash, and my squad was huge. The wage budget full as well, so I had to release players and look for bargains.

Lopes was my best player, but I had to sell to balance the books. David was brought in on loan to replace him and Wellington would provide competition up front.

...first qualifying stage
It was a lot more straight forward than it looked, I lost my last two games when I was already qualified. It was a promising start, and strike rFelipe Adao was banging them in, with 9 in 14.

...the second stage
This was the big shock, we were brilliant, getting a 4-0 away win on the opening day against Guarani. From there we didn't look back, despite being huge underdogs in every game.

..third stage
I scraped through here, not helped by injuries. My star player, left back Paulo Rodriguez, broke his leg and I had an injury crisis in midfield. We battled away though, and qualified with a game to spare.

...final stage
By this stage I was being given odds of 16-1 just to win a game, but that didn't stop my players. The reason I picked the team was because I thought a lot of the players had great stats considering their values, and we won our first 5 games here. After that it was a bit of a struggle, but we did enough. Second Division here we come!

...my squad

My best players were:
Rogerio Rios - My formation relied heavily on full backs and he was the pick of them, scoring 5 and creating numerous goals. He was probably my best attacking player even though he was playing right back.
Cocito - I was amazed he was playing at such a low level, and he was a huge influence in the DM position. He scored a couple of screamers as well. He is attracting interest from bigger clubs now.
Felipe Adao - His goals dried up later on in the season, but he always popped up with a huge goal when needed. My top scorer.

re: Story Of Your Season

Aris FC

Aris FC are one of the strongest mid-table Greek Superleague clubs. Having not enjoyed a title in quite a long time, my mission was to lead them to the glory that fans from Salonica are so desperate for.

Aris have quite a decent squad to begin with, but all I really used it for was building up cash and providing depth to the new generation of players I brought. Thankfully, the market value of several first teamers was high enough to considerably boost the transfer budget and allow the purchase of many talented youngsters. Fans were puzzled at the sale of so many influential players in so little time, but I knew the right results would win them over.

Those results would take some time to come. UEFA Cup football was not something we could focus on given the lack of serious depth, so getting knocked out by Everton in the second round of our participation wasn’t that much of a surprise. The incompetence of our backup players was evident after a shock greek cup elimination by lower leaguers Atromitos. All that remained was to shift our attention to the league and get a european qualification spot as we were expected to at the start of the season. Despite our bad away form at times, we did manage to finish fifth and just make the playoffs that would make the difference between CL football, UEFA Cup and Intertoto. Excellent counterattacking tactics used at the right time allowed us to clinch the third spot just behind the usual suspects Olympiakos and Panathinaikos. That would give us enough time to plan ahead during the summer before any european matches took place.

The fans were understandably pleased. We hadn’t seen a top three spot in two decades and to top that, the average age of our squad was astonishingly low. Despite the harmony issues, the board was almost obliged to offer me a three year extension of my contract, hoping that this talented nucleus of players will finally be able to overthrow the football reign of Athens in a few years’ time.

If I have to single out players that performed the best, my picks would be the following:

Ronny: Transfer listed in Sporting CP, after an amazing year as my starting left-back, his old club are now offering me more than 10 times the money I bought him for and I still don’t think it’s enough for his importance.

Celso Borges: I had heard a lot of praise about this player and thought I’d check out the hype myself. After one season, I know where those people were coming from. Stat-wise, he’s possibly the best AMC of the whole league and he’s yet to reach his peak. The only problem is he’s too erratic at times.

Ivan Ivanov: What can I say, the guy was my revelation. I hadn’t heard his name anywhere, I was just scouting Bulgarian clubs for bargains when I noticed him. Using the good old 08 corner setup, he finished his first season as the team’s leading goalscorer. Added to that, he was just as solid at the defense.

Plans for the next season, now; well, doing better than we did last season is the only actual target I’ve set. The third place might be hard to overcome, but I feel my squad do have the potential to start challenging for the league title and this season might just be it. I’m confident we have enough depth to make a decent run in all the competitions we’re in and I’m not looking to change things a lot. I’m mainly going to invest in youth from now on, unless a huge bargain comes up or I get a satisfactory offer for one of my players.

Nice write up Lone Warrior, I enjoyed reading that. I actually hadn't heard of Aris FC before so I guess that makes your top 3 achievement even better. How did Rene Mihelic perform for you? I remember having him on 08 a few times and he played quite well, although was fairly inconsistent.
