Not sure how widespread this is, if it's just EU or wider, but it's all over IW forums that the servers are down and nobody on the PS3 can get online. Contrary to what's been said, it's completely unrelated to patch 1.02. Activision have said they're unsure when the servers will be back up, but I've heard Friday is rumoured.

I'm in the US and the servers are down here too. I thinks it's the whole Playstation community that's experiencing this bullshit. Nobody on my friends list can play online. I was wondering why everyone was online but only playing the Campaign earlier.

It's a mixture of things. Fifa had an identical problem when it was launched, with the See specifically what your friends are doing. So when you see on the PSN menu that your friend is offline in single player doing a certain mission. Due to the amount of people on the game, and the amount of information the game has to send to PSN to show this, somewhere along the line something fried and it died.

Friday is when the invite thing is being fixed, whether or not that's when the whole online comes back on, I don't know.
