Haha, the OVA is a huge step up from the main season, it has some of the best, bloodiest action sequences in anime.

This should give you a basic idea. For people who think Elfen Lied is bloody the havent seen this.

Well, the original series came out back when hardcore pornographic/ violence was mainstream, and was pretty much the only stuff that got translated to English (the 'Manga' Anime era). The way violence and sex is used has changed a lot since then: Akira style violence is rated M (whilst it was typically higher back then) but sex is frowned upon.

Sigh, I wish they still had the skull exploding action of yesteryear... copious amounts of blood doesn't really count as real violence to me. Elfen Lied really isn't very gorey. The original Devilman had a plant that ate a fairy then became a plant fairy. That is just win. Or maybe nostalgia is just kicking in.
