[Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

quote Plot Summary According to Sources
Byousoku 5 Centimeters (Speed of 5 Centimeters per Second) is the chained three episodes of a boy Takaki Tohno and a girl Akari Shinohara. Its story is set on Japan from the first half of the 1990s to now. The storyline is based on real life in Japan, doesn't have Sci-Fi or fanfasy taste.
Notes By Me: This is a three episode series shows how people drift apart slowly over time. There is a boundless depth like I've never seen in any anime before. I suggest watching this very carefully, it can lose you easily. I watched it three times before I could decide what I got from it exactly. Quite simply, it will be one of the most incredible animes you've seen if you can grasp what happens.

Genre: Drama (there's really no other word for it)
Episodes: 3 (It totals to about an hour)
Closing Theme: "One more time, one more chance" (Written and Performed by: Masayoshi Yamazaki)
Music By: Tenmon

Again, this is an astoundingly deep anime. I'd love to get some discussion going about this. I still don't fully know what I have learned from it. Using the speed at which cherry blossoms fall and drift apart as a metaphor for how the same happens to people, this director created something very realistic, something people can relate to.

I give this 5 stars, seriously. It deserves no less.

From Wikipedia:

quote
The North American version of the DVD will be released December 2007. It will be produced by ADV Films, the largest Anime distributor in the United States. The specific day of its release has not been confirmed. [2]. ADV has also more recently confirmed that they will also be launching 5 Centimetres Per Second on DVD in the UK.[3]
Definitely sounds like something I'd like to see. I'm usually watching the more sci-fi and fantasy oriented anime but like to break up the monotony with a serious or true-to-life series/movie when i get the chance. But its been a while since i have so I guess i'll be looking into watching and/or acquiring this in the near future.

I heard that it would be licensed soon shortly after I watched it. Even if the dub is bad, I'm certain it would be easier to understand. It should be good regardless. I wish there were more on the matter.

I love all of Makoto Shinkai's works. They're always so deep... if you like this, you should enjoy the short OVA "Voices of a Distant Star", also by Shinkai.

I've only had time to watch about half of this- but it looks beautiful and it was really deep.

There was a thread for this already, somewhere.... >.>

Dunno if there is another thread about this, but I might look into this...

If it isn't already licensed anyhow...

Is it really like "Based on a true story" or is it just realistic?

It's not based on a true story, just very very real. You'll be surprised at just about how real it is. I recall a scene where there was a thunderstorm off in the distance, fully animated and everything. It gets really detailed. Also, the thread for this, if it exists, wasn't in the index. We should probably get this one indexed this time.

@Oni: You should try to watch the rest, you're at my favorite part. I'll look into the OVA. It sounds cool. I'm gonna find some more stuff by this guy. He's a really renowned director in the anime world I hear.

Loved this movie, saw the first part sometime last year and was waiting for the last two parts for so long and they did not disappoint.

I've got to admit, I was skeptical of it. My friend recommended it to me a few weeks ago so I decided to get it. Of course, it sat there unwatched for those two weeks. I regret not watching it earlier now.

I must say. I've watched the first part of this and it is truly amazing. The art is like nothing I've ever seen before in an anime. The colors and design are vibrant and fresh, which makes you appreciate the simple things you see in every day life. The story is really deep and everything is excellent, really astounding. I'll be watching the other 2 parts now.

Yep, a really well done anime. Short and sweet! I much prefer anime when they have more realism to them.

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

Well after seeing this post I got around to finishing the last 2 parts. And I must say it is a sad yet compelling story, obstacle over obstacle and in the end life still changes.

spoiler

quote
It took me a few minutes into Chapter 3 to realize that Takaki Tōno had not been msg anyone only to himself. The end saddened me because they did not find each other, but its a slap in the face showing it was reality.
Btw the ending song I loved it. Apparently the song was also the theme song of the 1996 Japanese movie Moon and Cabbage, the song is "One More Time, One More Chance" by Masayoshi Yamazaki, and it was a famous song apparently to connect to realism.

I'm glad you seem to have enjoyed it. You even got a new banner for it. I was hoping I'd get some people to watch it.

Anyway, it took me forever to find what I thought was meaning in the ending.

"I realized that I'd lost everything that was beautiful in life, I quit my job" (he said something like that in the final scene

That is the single lie that made me want to watch it three more times. Seriously, I had to figure out what he did wrong. Tell me what you guys think about it.

@Silver tidus: I know, that ending song is awesome. So appropriate.
