Ah, I'd like a blu-ray version. Ummm, I'll take your blu-ray player off your hands? I'm sure I have a GPU up to the task ^_~

@Mastix (and anyone with similar experience) - Do you notice that a lot of 1080p files are actually pretty crappy looking? They always seem pixelated. 720p files generally seem clearer. I think a combination of computers that aren't up to the task, and quality reductions to keep filesizes more internet friendly, leads to crappy looking 1080p encodes. My 5cm/s doesn't look that bad, I think, but I also have steamboy, which looks rather pixelated, especially when compared to the (even upscaled) 720p music video I mentioned earlier. Well, not so much pixelated, as full of artifacts >_>

Blame your monitor/GPU or player. Not only that, but 1080p is only actually beneficial if the original source is in fact 1920x1080 pixels or greater.

1080p videos look simply incredible on the PS3 with my 26" monitor. However, I find that color depth and clarity are more important than sheer resolution these days.

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

Ummm it was a BD-Rip (Hence 1080p files)? It was just poorly ripped (I think it was only a few GB big, which just isn't enough for a movie at that resolution I suppose). Like I said, it seems like a number of rips at that resolution have just been encoded to too low a quality. People that just don't get that resolution doesn't matter if the encoding is crap. A good 720p video > 1080p piece of crap.

Trust me, my GPU and monitor are up to the task....The computer I played this other file (Steamboy) has a Radeon HD 4870 connected over DVI to a 16:9 monitor (1920 x 1080). As I said, a 720p video looked great. My GPU is probably a fair bit better than your GPU, if it is struggling to play a 1080p video.

I actually have an old GPU (on this computer, not my new one), an NvIDIA Geforce 6200 turbocache. It can play 1080p files, though it stutters (watching 5cm/s was kinda less fun because I had to keep pausing and resuming). But anything less than that (like 720p) it plays just fine. I'm guessing your GPU is probably just a bit more recent than that model?

I just don't have a BD-ROM/R on my computer....Too expensive right now, particularly since I already have a PS3 hooked up via HDMI

I don't think you really read my previous post properly in any case, and just noticed a few words/phrases jump out at you >_>

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

It wasn't my GPU, it was my RAM at the time. At least, I'm fairly certain it was. It could have also been the player (ZPlayer can lag at times). I've since upgraded my RAM and I haven't tried lately but I'm pretty sure it's up to the task (I'm using a laptop, but this GPU is made for 3D modeling programs).

Btw, you say "1080p files" as if you're implying that 1080p looks bad. I was correcting you on that. If you wanted to say something else, then you should have done so.

They were actually fine for me. No stutter, no pixelation, crystal clear. I have Utawarerumono in Blu-Ray quality and it ran fantastically.

More specifically, I said 'a lot of 1080p files'....Meaning, a lot of 1080p downloads (at least for anime) have in my experience, had more artifacts than it should (compared to 720p files). 720p files generally look better for me. I mean, obviously if you found a 10GB 1080p movie, it should look great, but it seems a lot of them are only a few gigs or so.

Again, I have to say that it is just my limited experience with 1080p anime files. (Remember, FILES, not DISKS).

Once again, like I said, I think it is mostly the people ripping from said 1080p sources are lowering the quality of the videos to the point they should just rip it to higher quality @720p resolution....

I gotta say, kudos to Mastix for having a link to this thread in your sig. Great, great anime. It's one of the few anime (possibly the only one, can't think of another right now that fits) that's actually affected my outlook on life. Definitely goes in my top anime of all time list. I've gone through a long-distance relationship before, and the first episode really captures that sort of situation to an almost scary degree.

I find it actually a bit funny that an anime 3 episodes long provoked more emotion and has an overall better storyline (imo) than any anime I've seen that goes on for an eternity and a half (cough, shonen jump stuff...cough). And not even by a bit, but by a tremendous amount. I haven't ever almost done what could be considered a 'schoolgirl squeal' at a 'touchy-feely' part of a movie or show before, and I've seen quite a few. I'm sure my roommate hopes that the sound was a one-time deal, it was pretty odd sounding considering I'm male.

.

I'm watching it at about a 700p resolution, but fullscreen sends it to a 1280p. If you're having framerate issues, try using VLC. I usually use MPclassic with the CCCP, but it eats your video card if you try to run high resolution stuff. VLC tends to be less taxing, so I have to use it (I have a crap video card) on stuff with a native res of at least 1000p.

Thanks Lorx. I don't think I'll ever remove it either. Neo will be shut down or my profile will get deleted first. This is the most poignant and authentic depiction of the painful and beautiful aspects of love and life ever to be rendered in anime form. Like you said, Lorx, it's one of those rare anime that changes your outlook on things. Having also been in a long distance relationship, one that was torn apart in about a month, it's become even more relevant. Not that long-distance relationships have to die, but yeah, this demonstrates rather acutely what a bitch distance can be.

Added in my sig as well, it 'deserves it'.

I thought it interesting that you not only saw the main couple grow apart, but how it affected his life, and the poor girl that fell for him.

Cool. Always good to spread the word about it. It's really a pity that it's so expensive to get the DVD now. Curse ADV for failing to keep the license. Even if they screwed up the dubs, DVD is good. Speaking of which, the re-dubbed version was an improvement on ADVs. It still sucked, but yeah.

Kanae you mean? Yeah. Best character in the series, and one of my favorite anime characters of all time.

It depressed me more than it changed any outlooks I had on life. I was irritated in the end... I recall shouting something like 'turn the *bleep* around and call out her name you dumbass' in my head...

The first chapter was my favorite.

I just finished watching this, and was disappointed in how things turned out I guess.

The first chapter was by far the greatest. The second felt depressing, and the third was short but finished everything off nicely. All in all, it was pretty good though, it makes you realize how fast and slow life can be.

The ending is supposed to be disappointing to most people, but only because it's more realistic. Everyone would like for them to end up together.

You could see it as a bit bittersweet. Mostly bitter, of course. The dominant emotion should be your disappointment, wishing it had ended more positively; however, you get a bit of sweet comfort knowing both protagonists have matured and moved forward at the end. Or at least hoping that's the case.

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

I finished this about a week ago and I can relate to many of the events and this movie changed my lifeview. This is an amazing masterpiece.

Has anyone seen the alternative ending? It's just the ending MV but it ends a tad differently. The order of the MV scenes might have been moved around a bit too.

(I didn't feel like bumping the thread back up before since it was quite far down, but I guess anything goes in the anime forum. ^^)
