[Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

quote Plot Summary According to Sources
Byousoku 5 Centimeters (Speed of 5 Centimeters per Second) is the chained three episodes of a boy Takaki Tohno and a girl Akari Shinohara. Its story is set on Japan from the first half of the 1990s to now. The storyline is based on real life in Japan, doesn't have Sci-Fi or fanfasy taste.
Notes By Me: This is a three episode series shows how people drift apart slowly over time. There is a boundless depth like I've never seen in any anime before. I suggest watching this very carefully, it can lose you easily. I watched it three times before I could decide what I got from it exactly. Quite simply, it will be one of the most incredible animes you've seen if you can grasp what happens.

Genre: Drama (there's really no other word for it)
Episodes: 3 (It totals to about an hour)
Closing Theme: "One more time, one more chance" (Written and Performed by: Masayoshi Yamazaki)
Music By: Tenmon

Again, this is an astoundingly deep anime. I'd love to get some discussion going about this. I still don't fully know what I have learned from it. Using the speed at which cherry blossoms fall and drift apart as a metaphor for how the same happens to people, this director created something very realistic, something people can relate to.

I give this 5 stars, seriously. It deserves no less.

I heard that it would be licensed soon shortly after I watched it. Even if the dub is bad, I'm certain it would be easier to understand. It should be good regardless. I wish there were more on the matter.

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

It's not based on a true story, just very very real. You'll be surprised at just about how real it is. I recall a scene where there was a thunderstorm off in the distance, fully animated and everything. It gets really detailed. Also, the thread for this, if it exists, wasn't in the index. We should probably get this one indexed this time.

@Oni: You should try to watch the rest, you're at my favorite part. I'll look into the OVA. It sounds cool. I'm gonna find some more stuff by this guy. He's a really renowned director in the anime world I hear.

I've got to admit, I was skeptical of it. My friend recommended it to me a few weeks ago so I decided to get it. Of course, it sat there unwatched for those two weeks. I regret not watching it earlier now.

I must say. I've watched the first part of this and it is truly amazing. The art is like nothing I've ever seen before in an anime. The colors and design are vibrant and fresh, which makes you appreciate the simple things you see in every day life. The story is really deep and everything is excellent, really astounding. I'll be watching the other 2 parts now.
I'm glad you seem to have enjoyed it. You even got a new banner for it. I was hoping I'd get some people to watch it.

Anyway, it took me forever to find what I thought was meaning in the ending.

"I realized that I'd lost everything that was beautiful in life, I quit my job" (he said something like that in the final scene

That is the single lie that made me want to watch it three more times. Seriously, I had to figure out what he did wrong. Tell me what you guys think about it.

@Silver tidus: I know, that ending song is awesome. So appropriate.

@Silver: Yeah I follow that part. But I think there's even more to that. I think part of it is that it says that life won't go where you want it to if you wait. Something about the sakura petals is that they slowly drift apart because they do not attempt to control where they go. They simply sit by and hope they end up back together. They cross paths sometimes, but never for long. In life, the destination is what matters. Starting together is terrible if you don't end up together.

English:
How much more do I have to lose, before my heart is forgiven?
How many more pains do I have to suffer, to meet you once again?
One more time, oh seasons, fade not
One more time, when we were messing around

Whenever we disagreed, I would always give in first
Your selfish nature made me love you even more
One more chance, the memories restrain my steps
One more chance, I cannot choose my next destination

I'm always searching, for your figure to appear somewhere
On the opposite platform, in the windows along the lane
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If my wish were to come true, I would be at your side right away
There would be nothing I couldn't do
I would put everything on the line and hold you tight

If I just wanted to avoid loneliness, anybody would have been enough.
Because the night looks like the stars will fall, I cannot lie to myself.
One more time, oh seasons, fade not.
One more time, when we were messing around

I'm always searching, for your figure to appear somewhere
At a street crossing, in the midst of dreams
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If a miracle were to happen here, I would show you right away
The new morning, who I'll be from now on
And the words I never said: "I love you."

The memories of summer are revolving
The throbbing which suddenly disappeared

I'm always searching, for your figure to appear somewhere
At dawn on the streets, at Sakuragi-cho
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If my wish were to come true, I would be at your side right away
There would be nothing I couldn't do
I would put everything on the line and hold you tight

I'm always searching, for fragments of you to appear somewhere
At a traveller's store, in the corner of newspaper,
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If a miracle were to happen here, I would show you right away
The new morning, who I'll be from now on
And the words I never said: "I love you."

I always end up looking for your smile, to appear somewhere
At the railroad crossing, waiting for the express to pass
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If our lives could be repeated, I would be at your side every time
I would want nothing else
Besides you, nothing else matters
For those who wanted the english.

Yeah it's a pretty cool song. I think it's a good choice for this anime. It's also the only actual "song" in the whole show, so it better be good. lol

Spoiler: Hopeful?
Highlight this box with your cursor to read the spoiler text.
Let's see, the love of his life got married, he quit his job, and lost everything in life that was beautiful. Where's the hope in that? It's not very hopeful as far as the relationships between the characters. I suppose you could say it's hopeful in that he still has a lot ahead of him and he can start anew with his life. How else?

Same. I can't believe that I haven't yet. I did find the OST for this, which I'm proud of, because it took forever. Now I suppose I should check out some of the older films.

I heard it wasn't as good as some of his other works, let alone this one. Separation is supposedly a common theme in many of his pieces though.

The voices are supposedly very well done in the NA versions. I really hope they keep up the trend on that. Are there threads for Shinkai's other animes?

@Suicide: Yeah, I know. He does well with that theme. I don't know if he's experienced it or if he just thinks about it a lot, but he knows it's effects well enough to write a very convincing story.

"And one morning, when I at last came to the earnest realization... that I had lost everything that was beautiful, I knew I was at my limits, and quit the company." <-- I mentioned earlier that I loved that line right? That was among the best moments of the movie to me. I honestly think that final speech defines the conclusion excellently.

Beside that, it would have to be the scene in part two where Kanae finally manages to stay on her board again, that whole scene demonstrating her newly found confidence. Anyway, yeah, it was great in part because of what followed. But I won't go into that for those who haven't viewed it yet and because I'm lazy.

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

Sorry for the double post but I felt the need to bump this. I just have to say: the dubbing is gonna make me cry. Unless by some miracle it improves before release, I'm going to be extremely disappointed. I watched the trailer released by ADV (watch here) and I almost died. It was probably the most misleading and cheesy trailer they could have made, and it revealed what I think was a very poor choice of voice actors. My expectations are shot right now. Any encouragement?

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

I hate to conclude what the dub will say before it's fully released, but right now it sounds like they think it's about falling in love, purely. I really don't think 5 centimeters per second is "the speed at which you fall in love." That is nonsense. They start out in love and drift apart. There is absolutely no indication that they are actually drawing closer, and in fact, the evidence stands against that. I really hope they realize that at some point.

Anyway, I could get used to the voice actors if the script sounds right to me. Who knows, we don't know how they sound as children yet. Maybe it'll make up for the bad choice of adult voice actors. I really hope it turns out as well as the japanese version. It easily could. They did incredibly with "The Place Promised In Our Early Days." That had an excellent dub. Maybe 5cm/s will make a recovery as well.

Yeah I know how it works. I can get used to most english voice acting over time. It's the translation and interpretation itself that I can never get used to. The fansubbers seem to do a much better job than the official script writers...

It's a bump BUT!

Just watched it, changed my desktop background as well! The graphics are absolutely beautiful <3. The story itself made me tear up at each individual episode and I really like it due to both characters being so sentimental about their first love. It's quite sad at how everything ends up but I enjoyed this ending because it's quite true in real life that one can relate to it. A very meaningful anime, that will linger in my mind for years to come <3.

Yay, someone else who made this there background soon after watching. lol It is very beautiful. I'm glad you liked it.

I'm still thinking about making a thread for The Place Promised In Our Early Days. I watched it awhile back and thought it was excellent. Not as good as this one, but still, it looked amazing, it had a great soundtrack, and the story was good. At least it had a positive ending. I thought it was better than Voices, if only because of animation style and duration.

Edit: there seems to be a forum for Place Promised that no one posts in...

The song is "One More Time, One More Chance" by Yamazaki Masayoshi. It's great isn't it?

I don't really get your opinion from your post though... What are you trying to say about it exactly? Did you like it?

Yeah, it wasn't gonna have a happy ending. If you watched closely though, at the end it seemed that the characters were both able to at least put on faces of contentment.

I've had that from several sources actually. Only the ADV website fails to confirm it. That date's been out and unconfirmed for a while now.

Well, I didn't post it because of what's happening right now. Usually ADV has some kind of release date released on the website at this point. I mean, December is almost over, and ADV has been silent on the whole thing. I'm seriously doubting the date we were given.

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

Most of us here have watched Voices and/or Place Promised, silver_tidus. Place Promised is prettier than Voices, but I like the story of Voices more, personally.
quote Aya Chan
Honestly, I'm not sure what to say about it. The whole thing was very touching and I felt very emotionally moved at times. I'm not exactly sure what to make of the ending... actually, I may have to watch the entire anime again just to see what I truly think of it and determine what I got from it. I absolutely adored the artwork... it's simply amazing. When Takaki and Akari are sitting on that grassy hill with the star ridden night sky above them... I don't know, it was just emotional somehow, not to mention absolutely beautiful. I am so happy that I decided to give this anime a chance, the creator is truly a genius.
Go for it, that's exactly what I did. No one really knows what to make of the ending on the first run through. I watched it three times before I felt secure about my conclusion. There are many scenes like the hill scene. My personal favorite (besides the Kanae surfing scene):

quote Aya Chan
Oh, and for some reason every time I hear the ending piano music I end up feeling sort of sad, or... reflective somehow? I honestly didn't think an anime could do this to me.
The ending music does that to everyone. "One more time, one more chance" couldn't have been more appropriate.
quote Aya Chan
Ah yes, and I inwardly chuckled when Akari told Takaki that the stray cat's name was Chobi
Haha, yeah, the "She and Her Cat" reference was great.

Does she let go? It didn't really show that. Her hand dropped to her side, but we don't know if she let go or not. I'd be really sad if she did that with such a huge smile on her face. That would just be cruel.

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

Yeah no kidding. I watched it again just now and realized that I'd misinterpreted several things, and missed many others during those video flashes that Shinkai loves doing so much. There are so many nuances that you can miss like that. For example: did you guys notice that the magazine he was reading at the end (convenience store just before the all-too-famous song starts) was about the ELISH Satellite leaving the solar system? You know, the one he watched launch into space in Cosmonaut? I swear, I always miss these things...

Did anyone else realize there was a novel for 5 centimeters per second? It's written by Shinkai himself, and I'm ticked because I can't find it anywhere. I really want to read that.

I read that blog entry as well. The writer had several comments on the ending in other entries. I don't know if he's right or not, but I think reading the book would clear it up.

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

Just got the Dub on DVD and watched it. I viewed it with horror beyond my expectations. I didn't expect the dubbing to be nearly as bad as it was. I was slamming my head on the wall every five minutes. They made Kanae's voice nasally! Nasally!!! Just give me five minutes with her voice actor... that will be enough.

I read the book by the way. It was a mind opening experience. Totally redefined Takaki for me. His tale is far sadder than I initially thought. I feel so terrible for him. He tried so hard to recover, but even after he'd moved on, things always got in the way. Things from his past, his emotions, his differences. I would almost say there was nothing he could do about it. What's really frightening is that it made me feel a sudden similarity to him. I can sympathize with many of his experiences.

My opinion of Kanae has only gotten better. I can't help but love the girl more than before, especially knowing her final moments. I don't think I'll watch Cosmonaut the same way again. There was even more imagery than I had initially thought. I suppose that's true about all the chapters though. I had already picked up on the fact that Tohno was aware of Kanae's affection for him, but it was nice to read confirmation. I'm glad to know he felt bad about it, but knew it was necessary. His rejection was probably one of the nicest things he did to a girl in the 17 years we read about. Some say he should have cut her off earlier, but I'm glad he waited until after the rocket's take-off, when she was ready to confess. It was necessary that she experience at least that moment together with him.

I suddenly don't feel any disdain for Akari anymore either. I don't particularly feel any connection with her, but I'm really glad she took the best things out of her relationship with Takaki. She didn't try to forget him, but instead treasured their memories together more than anything in the world. That's a heartwarming thought.

Yeah, that's the problem. She's my favorite character. I can't believe they ruined her...

Yeah, there are a lot of things I misinterpreted. More so things I never noticed. It's too bad the third story was so truncated. The book went far more into Takaki's adulthood.

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance

The annoying thing is that, yeah, it's dual audio, but the subs are miserable. I regret deleting my fansubbed version. Well, that's a bit overstated. The subs aren't awful, they just aren't exactly praiseworthy. Sadly, ADV did a very mediocre job with this. It would have done them well to think more about the story before totally misinterpreting it. I think that hurt the translation significantly. The story seems clichéd, as you noted, in the English version. It's depressing.

Yeah... in regards to the spoiler, the dub isn't so mistaken that it screws up the meaning that badly, but it certainly doesn't meat my expectations.

Finally, I concede that I was exaggerating my intentions a little over Kanae's VA. She's got her good moments. Overall though, I wish she would kindly cease participation in any serious VA roles. She's not suited to them. She'd be more appropriately cast as an obnoxious girl in some school life anime. Deep drama? No.

Yeah... I saw that a few days ago. The most hilarious part is, ADV still hasn't put even a news article about it on their website. lol It's still awesome. I was thrilled to see that the other day.

The Blu-Ray version will be priceless, IMO. It's a possession I would horde for the rest of my life... until there is a higher quality release. I need to get a blu-ray player for my computer...

I'm glad you liked it Goyun. I recommend you try it out in BluRay quality. It's freaking incredible. It's the only anime I know of that was worth getting in BluRay. Anyway, yeah, Cosmonaut was supposedly the most visually appealing on purpose. Shinkai believes that good scenery will heal any emotional wounds. So, during the saddest chapter, he chose to use the most beautiful scenery. I adored Cosmonaut. It was most certainly my favorite chapter.

Oh of course. I love Kanae. She's a favorite. And truly, he is on to something. I went to Cornwall a week ago, and I must say, it has the most beautiful countryside I've ever seen. Just looking at it made me forget all of my troubles and I could feel my stress drain away. It's a euphoric experience.

quote tallteen86
Ah, I'd like a blu-ray version. Ummm, I'll take your blu-ray player off your hands? I'm sure I have a GPU up to the task ^_~

@Mastix (and anyone with similar experience) - Do you notice that a lot of 1080p files are actually pretty crappy looking? They always seem pixelated. 720p files generally seem clearer. I think a combination of computers that aren't up to the task, and quality reductions to keep filesizes more internet friendly, leads to crappy looking 1080p encodes. My 5cm/s doesn't look that bad, I think, but I also have steamboy, which looks rather pixelated, especially when compared to the (even upscaled) 720p music video I mentioned earlier. Well, not so much pixelated, as full of artifacts >_>
They were actually fine for me. No stutter, no pixelation, crystal clear. I have Utawarerumono in Blu-Ray quality and it ran fantastically.

Thanks Lorx. I don't think I'll ever remove it either. Neo will be shut down or my profile will get deleted first. This is the most poignant and authentic depiction of the painful and beautiful aspects of love and life ever to be rendered in anime form. Like you said, Lorx, it's one of those rare anime that changes your outlook on things. Having also been in a long distance relationship, one that was torn apart in about a month, it's become even more relevant. Not that long-distance relationships have to die, but yeah, this demonstrates rather acutely what a bitch distance can be.

Cool. Always good to spread the word about it. It's really a pity that it's so expensive to get the DVD now. Curse ADV for failing to keep the license. Even if they screwed up the dubs, DVD is good. Speaking of which, the re-dubbed version was an improvement on ADVs. It still sucked, but yeah.

Kanae you mean? Yeah. Best character in the series, and one of my favorite anime characters of all time.

You could see it as a bit bittersweet. Mostly bitter, of course. The dominant emotion should be your disappointment, wishing it had ended more positively; however, you get a bit of sweet comfort knowing both protagonists have matured and moved forward at the end. Or at least hoping that's the case.

Just to clarify, yes, it's always fine to bump old anime threads. They're in the index so you know where to discuss them. I like the ending MV. It's touching, and I always loved the song. It works so well for this movie. It was allegedly the inspiration for it.
