[Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance |
|
~ ど ん な ど の 速 さ で 生 き ん な... き み に ま た 会 え る の か。~ "At what speed must I live... to be able to see you again?" Official Screenshots Wallpapers quote Plot Summary According to SourcesNotes By Me: This is a three episode series shows how people drift apart slowly over time. There is a boundless depth like I've never seen in any anime before. I suggest watching this very carefully, it can lose you easily. I watched it three times before I could decide what I got from it exactly. Quite simply, it will be one of the most incredible animes you've seen if you can grasp what happens. Genre: Drama (there's really no other word for it) Episodes: 3 (It totals to about an hour) Closing Theme: "One more time, one more chance" (Written and Performed by: Masayoshi Yamazaki) Music By: Tenmon Again, this is an astoundingly deep anime. I'd love to get some discussion going about this. I still don't fully know what I have learned from it. Using the speed at which cherry blossoms fall and drift apart as a metaphor for how the same happens to people, this director created something very realistic, something people can relate to. I give this 5 stars, seriously. It deserves no less. ![]() This message was edited by mastix on Aug 27 2007. This message was edited by mastix on Oct 26 2007.

I heard that it would be licensed soon shortly after I watched it. Even if the dub is bad, I'm certain it would be easier to understand. It should be good regardless. I wish there were more on the matter.

It's not based on a true story, just very very real. You'll be surprised at just about how real it is. I recall a scene where there was a thunderstorm off in the distance, fully animated and everything. It gets really detailed. Also, the thread for this, if it exists, wasn't in the index. We should probably get this one indexed this time.
@Oni: You should try to watch the rest, you're at my favorite part. I'll look into the OVA. It sounds cool. I'm gonna find some more stuff by this guy. He's a really renowned director in the anime world I hear. ![]() -------------------

I've got to admit, I was skeptical of it. My friend recommended it to me a few weeks ago so I decided to get it. Of course, it sat there unwatched for those two weeks. I regret not watching it earlier now.

@Silver: Yeah I follow that part. But I think there's even more to that. I think part of it is that it says that life won't go where you want it to if you wait. Something about the sakura petals is that they slowly drift apart because they do not attempt to control where they go. They simply sit by and hope they end up back together. They cross paths sometimes, but never for long. In life, the destination is what matters. Starting together is terrible if you don't end up together.

Spoiler: Hopeful? Highlight this box with your cursor to read the spoiler text. Let's see, the love of his life got married, he quit his job, and lost everything in life that was beautiful. Where's the hope in that? It's not very hopeful as far as the relationships between the characters. I suppose you could say it's hopeful in that he still has a lot ahead of him and he can start anew with his life. How else? ![]() -------------------

The voices are supposedly very well done in the NA versions. I really hope they keep up the trend on that. Are there threads for Shinkai's other animes?
@Suicide: Yeah, I know. He does well with that theme. I don't know if he's experienced it or if he just thinks about it a lot, but he knows it's effects well enough to write a very convincing story. ![]() -------------------

"And one morning, when I at last came to the earnest realization... that I had lost everything that was beautiful, I knew I was at my limits, and quit the company." <-- I mentioned earlier that I loved that line right? That was among the best moments of the movie to me. I honestly think that final speech defines the conclusion excellently.
Beside that, it would have to be the scene in part two where Kanae finally manages to stay on her board again, that whole scene demonstrating her newly found confidence. Anyway, yeah, it was great in part because of what followed. But I won't go into that for those who haven't viewed it yet and because I'm lazy. ![]() ~ ど ん な ど の 速 さ で 生 き ん な... -------------------

Sorry for the double post but I felt the need to bump this. I just have to say: the dubbing is gonna make me cry. Unless by some miracle it improves before release, I'm going to be extremely disappointed. I watched the trailer released by ADV (watch here) and I almost died. It was probably the most misleading and cheesy trailer they could have made, and it revealed what I think was a very poor choice of voice actors. My expectations are shot right now. Any encouragement?

re: [Anime] 5 Centimeters Per Second - a chain of short stories about their distance |

I hate to conclude what the dub will say before it's fully released, but right now it sounds like they think it's about falling in love, purely. I really don't think 5 centimeters per second is "the speed at which you fall in love." That is nonsense. They start out in love and drift apart. There is absolutely no indication that they are actually drawing closer, and in fact, the evidence stands against that. I really hope they realize that at some point.
Anyway, I could get used to the voice actors if the script sounds right to me. Who knows, we don't know how they sound as children yet. Maybe it'll make up for the bad choice of adult voice actors. I really hope it turns out as well as the japanese version. It easily could. They did incredibly with "The Place Promised In Our Early Days." That had an excellent dub. Maybe 5cm/s will make a recovery as well. ![]() -------------------

I'm still thinking about making a thread for The Place Promised In Our Early Days. I watched it awhile back and thought it was excellent. Not as good as this one, but still, it looked amazing, it had a great soundtrack, and the story was good. At least it had a positive ending. I thought it was better than Voices, if only because of animation style and duration. Edit: there seems to be a forum for Place Promised that no one posts in... Yeah no kidding. I watched it again just now and realized that I'd misinterpreted several things, and missed many others during those video flashes that Shinkai loves doing so much. There are so many nuances that you can miss like that. For example: did you guys notice that the magazine he was reading at the end (convenience store just before the all-too-famous song starts) was about the ELISH Satellite leaving the solar system? You know, the one he watched launch into space in Cosmonaut? I swear, I always miss these things...
Did anyone else realize there was a novel for 5 centimeters per second? It's written by Shinkai himself, and I'm ticked because I can't find it anywhere. I really want to read that. ![]() -------------------

Just got the Dub on DVD and watched it. I viewed it with horror beyond my expectations. I didn't expect the dubbing to be nearly as bad as it was. I was slamming my head on the wall every five minutes. They made Kanae's voice nasally! Nasally!!! Just give me five minutes with her voice actor... that will be enough.
I read the book by the way. It was a mind opening experience. Totally redefined Takaki for me. His tale is far sadder than I initially thought. I feel so terrible for him. He tried so hard to recover, but even after he'd moved on, things always got in the way. Things from his past, his emotions, his differences. I would almost say there was nothing he could do about it. What's really frightening is that it made me feel a sudden similarity to him. I can sympathize with many of his experiences. My opinion of Kanae has only gotten better. I can't help but love the girl more than before, especially knowing her final moments. I don't think I'll watch Cosmonaut the same way again. There was even more imagery than I had initially thought. I suppose that's true about all the chapters though. I had already picked up on the fact that Tohno was aware of Kanae's affection for him, but it was nice to read confirmation. I'm glad to know he felt bad about it, but knew it was necessary. His rejection was probably one of the nicest things he did to a girl in the 17 years we read about. Some say he should have cut her off earlier, but I'm glad he waited until after the rocket's take-off, when she was ready to confess. It was necessary that she experience at least that moment together with him. I suddenly don't feel any disdain for Akari anymore either. I don't particularly feel any connection with her, but I'm really glad she took the best things out of her relationship with Takaki. She didn't try to forget him, but instead treasured their memories together more than anything in the world. That's a heartwarming thought. ![]() -------------------

Yeah, there are a lot of things I misinterpreted. More so things I never noticed. It's too bad the third story was so truncated. The book went far more into Takaki's adulthood. ![]() -------------------

The annoying thing is that, yeah, it's dual audio, but the subs are miserable. I regret deleting my fansubbed version. Well, that's a bit overstated. The subs aren't awful, they just aren't exactly praiseworthy. Sadly, ADV did a very mediocre job with this. It would have done them well to think more about the story before totally misinterpreting it. I think that hurt the translation significantly. The story seems clichéd, as you noted, in the English version. It's depressing.
Yeah... in regards to the spoiler, the dub isn't so mistaken that it screws up the meaning that badly, but it certainly doesn't meat my expectations. Finally, I concede that I was exaggerating my intentions a little over Kanae's VA. She's got her good moments. Overall though, I wish she would kindly cease participation in any serious VA roles. She's not suited to them. She'd be more appropriately cast as an obnoxious girl in some school life anime. Deep drama? No. ![]() -------------------

I'm glad you liked it Goyun. I recommend you try it out in BluRay quality. It's freaking incredible. It's the only anime I know of that was worth getting in BluRay. Anyway, yeah, Cosmonaut was supposedly the most visually appealing on purpose. Shinkai believes that good scenery will heal any emotional wounds. So, during the saddest chapter, he chose to use the most beautiful scenery. I adored Cosmonaut. It was most certainly my favorite chapter.

Thanks Lorx. I don't think I'll ever remove it either. Neo will be shut down or my profile will get deleted first. This is the most poignant and authentic depiction of the painful and beautiful aspects of love and life ever to be rendered in anime form. Like you said, Lorx, it's one of those rare anime that changes your outlook on things. Having also been in a long distance relationship, one that was torn apart in about a month, it's become even more relevant. Not that long-distance relationships have to die, but yeah, this demonstrates rather acutely what a bitch distance can be.

You could see it as a bit bittersweet. Mostly bitter, of course. The dominant emotion should be your disappointment, wishing it had ended more positively; however, you get a bit of sweet comfort knowing both protagonists have matured and moved forward at the end. Or at least hoping that's the case.
