QB
Cade Simon - 86
Akeem Thomas - 84
Pat White - 65

HB
Charlie Fisher (R) - 87
Heath Johnson - 84 (short yardage back)

Scott Foster - 70

WR
Corey Davis - 90
Hank Greer - 79
Curtis Jones - 82
Tevaris Odrick (R) - 83
Fernado Austin - 76

*Note - Greer is starting at #2 due to his agility and jumping ability. He fights for the ball in the air and often comes down with it. Jones is slot to provide mismatches against slow nickelbacks. Odrick will improve as his AWR goes up. Right now, his route running needs to be worked on. He will be a serious threat by years end and could start then.*

LT
Barry King - 84
Torrance Williams (R) - 79

*Note - Williams is a much better run blocker than King while King is a premier pass blocker, so both will get plenty of playing time, depending on the situation (pass or run).

LG
Daryn Colledge - 89
Greg Barnes (R) - 72 (will see action in a couple packages to get his OVR up)

C

Josh Holmes - 83 (might see action in a few packages and will replace Spitz eventually)

RT
Ray Schmidt - 84
Chris Mason - 80

LE
Cullen Jenkins - 99
Rashard Culbert (R) - 71 (Don't think I can get this guy into a game with Jenkins' ability to penerate down after down.)

Darren House (R) - 86 (will play on passing downs)

*Note - I might sign a free agent DT to provide insurance in case of injury*

re: Timberwolf's Madden Diary - Green Bay Packers

Nice looking roster overall. You've got quite a bit of depth at QB, at first I kind of figured that you might want to trade away one of your QBs to fill in for another position, but you look good at pretty much every position. I'm also a little surprised to see AJ Hawk at such a high overall... wasn't his starting overall in the mid-to-upper 70's?

re: Timberwolf's Madden Diary - Green Bay Packers

Hawk was an 82 to start with. I played Capers' 3-4 in the first year and Hawk did not improve at all. I switched to the 4-3 in the 2nd season and Hawk was Nick Barnett's back-up during season 2 and most of season 3 until Barnett got hurt. Hawk then jumped to 87 in Barnett's absence and this prompted me to trade away Barnett. In season 4, Hawk was a monster and continued to improve to his current level.

I think the main thing is, had I stuck with the 3-4, I don't think Hawk would have improved that much, but I'm glad I made the move to the 4-3 with Hawk as the starting MLB, though Barnett's injury had a major part in that because I was going to trade Hawk away and keep Barnett.

I think 95 will be as high as he gets at he's in the prime of his career and should start to decline soon. That's why I drafted Sam Turner. He's raw, but has potential to be a starting MLB in about 3 years.

Should be a good season.

re: Timberwolf's Madden Diary - Green Bay Packers

*Full schedule will be posted within the day when I play the game next. I do know I open the first two games of the season by hosting Dallas and St. Louis. Funny how that worked out because two other diaries here involve Dallas and St. Louis - lol. On to the preview.*

Packers-Cowboys Preview

The Packers resume their rivalry with the Cowboys after a year's absence. Every game that the Packers and Cowboys have played have come down to the last play of the game and this one should be no exception despite Dallas' struggles on offense.

Last season, Cowboys HB Felix Jones was injured with a torn ACL and was out most of the season. Tashard Choice stepped up and did a great job carrying the ball for the Cowboys along with Marion Barber. Both Choice and Jones were due to be free agents. So what did the Cowboys do? They let Choice go in free agency to the Redskins and re-signed Jones, who was still not recovered from the ACL injury.

The result of that was - Choice became an impact player as a starting HB for the Redskins which has made fans forget about the retirement of Clinton Portis. As for Felix Jones, he's injured - again - with an ACL injury - again - and is out for the season - again.

With an unknown rookie behind him, it looks like HB Marion Barber will have to carry the offense in the running game.

As for QB Tony Romo, he remains an elite QB, but has lost a step and is not as mobile as he used to be. He still can throw and has a decent, but not great, crop of receivers to throw to. He will have a tough time to do so, however, against the Packers' top ranked defense.

The Cowboys defense will carry the team this year while the offense work out their struggles and should match up well against Green Bay's improved offense. While the Dallas D is not on the level of that of the Packers or Vikings, they are capable of making plays and can hold back even the most potent offenses in the NFL with a bend-but-don't-break strategy.

The game will be played late tonight and will be posted tomorrow. Stay tuned.

re: Timberwolf's Madden Diary - Green Bay Packers

How the heck did Cullen Jenkins get to 99 overall? Not to mention Pickett, Raji and Montgomery. Did you edit the stats before you started the franchise?

I'd be inclined to use that rookie corner as the nickel back - 82 is an excellent starting stat and he'll become an elite player if he gets plenty of game time. I'd also use that rookie receiver as the number 2 guy and try and get him the ball often.

re: Timberwolf's Madden Diary - Green Bay Packers

The defense overall is very good as a result of my very aggressive play calling that emphasizes pressure on the QB and RB by the DL and LBs. I have a great secondary to help coverage on any blitz pick ups. I control every one of the DL guys, depending on which way I think the ball is going. I control LB's on occasion as well if he's on a blitz route that opens up with a clear path to the HB or QB. Even with my 68 OVR RE Wendell Becket, I've gotten to the QB or RB with him a few times, using my skills to swim or bullrush past the OL. He's very strong, but slow. If he can't penetrate early, he's beaten, but if he penetrates early, it's a loss for yardage. As a result, they improved greatly. And no, I did not edit any stats.

The draw back of an agressive blitz heavy scheme is that I do give up the big play, even with a great secondary that I have, but I accept that trade off for the overall performance.

I think the reason you don't see this time of improvement on a Packers team controlled by the computer is because I think the play calling for the defense is not as agressive as mine. Plus none of the players are controlled by a human, which makes a difference. I find that human controlled players improve on their OVR much more than AI controlled players.

Ok..I'm beating Dallas in a tough game and with :20 to go left in the game, the system shuts down due to a faulty power cord...sighs..time to buy a new power cord..then play Dallas - again.

re: Timberwolf's Madden Diary - Green Bay Packers

Big Plays Sink Cowboys

Green Bay, WI - If it was not for two plays, the Dallas Cowboys would have won this game as their defense basically was shutting down the Packers' offense for the most part.

But a couple big plays by the Packers' offense were the key in the game.

On the first big play, QB Cade Simon led the Packers 15 yards in 5 plays to their own 36 yard line on the game's opening series. On 3rd down and long, the Cowboys defense came in hot on a blitz. Simon had to get rid of the ball quickly and throws a dart to slot receiver Curtis Jones, who jukes his way to daylight and hits paydirt on a 64 yard catch and run for a touchdown to give the Packers a quick 7-0 lead in the first 2:48 of the game.

The Cowboys defense then dominated the Packers offense while Tony Romo was effective but not great in leading Dallas to 13 points to help Dallas take a 13-7 lead in the 4th quarter. Only Green Bay's outstanding red zone defense kept the Cowboys' lead from being bigger.

Then with the Packers having the ball on the Green Bay 24 yard line after Tramon Williams picked off a Tony Romo pass, the Packers just needed one play to take the lead, which was a 76 yard bomb from Simon to WR Corey Davis on a play action. There was no one near Davis when he caught the pass as the Cowboys bit badly on the play fake. Davis just basically walked into the end zone to give the Packers the 14-13 lead with 2:44 left.

The Packers defense held and forced the Cowboys to turn over the ball on downs on the Dallas 34 yard line. Dallas still had their 3 time outs plus the 2 minute warning for clock stoppage. The Packers were able to move the chains to the 3 yard line before settling for a FG with :33 left, giving Green Bay the 17-13 lead. The defensive stand on the 3 yard line was huge for Dallas as it still made it a one-score game.

But Will Blackmon picked off a pass from Tony Romo to seal the victory, giving the Packers an improbable 17-13 victory. Improbable because their offense could not do anything in the game other than those two plays.

The fans went wild and remained in the stands for a while applauding the Packers for the tough win. Coach Ken Wisenhunt gave the game ball to the Packers defensive front four as they were able to apply pressure in both blitzing and non-blitzing situations and keep the Cowboys offense from generating big plays, particularly RB Marion Barber, who only had just 75 yards in 27 carries and one touchdown. Not having RB Felix Jones really hurt the Cowboys here as Green Bay basically put 8 men in the box for much of the game, daring Romo to throw. The strategy paid off as Romo was only able to go 12-17-162 and two interceptions. Romo's counterpart on the Green Bay side of the ball, Cade Simon, had a decent day going 19-33-288 for two touchdowns and two interceptions. One interception was a bad decision on Simon's part, but the other was a result of him being hit just as he threw the ball. Green Bay HB Charlie Fisher only carried the ball 18 times for 60 yards, but the Packers were trying to play catch up much of the game, so Fisher could not do much.

Slot receiver Curtis Jones led all Packer receivers with 5 catches for 93 yards and 1 touchdown. Brandon Tate led the Dallas receivers with 5 catches for just 44 yards.

Dallas 0 10 0 3 - 13
Green Bay 7 0 0 10 - 17

GB - C. Jones 64 pass from C. Simon (kick good)(6 plays, 79 yards, 2:48 TOP, 9:12 left in QTR)
Dallas - M. Barber 1 run (kick good)(11 plays, 55 yards, 4:48 TOP, 10:54 left in QTR)
Dallas - S. Green 41 FG (3 plays, 45 yards, :12 TOP :03 left in QTR)
Dallas - S. Green 20 FG (13 plays, 62 yards, 5:51 TOP, 10:06 left in QTR)
GB - C. Davis 76 pass from C. Simon (kick good)(1 play, 76 yards, :07 TOP, 2:44 left in game)
GB - Gostowski 20 FG (6 plays, 31 yards, 1:33 TOP, :33 left in game)

Next up: QB Aaron Rodgers returns to his old neighborhood when the Packers host the St. Louis Rams and their new quarterback.

I will post updated standings after every 4 games for the first 12 games and every week thereafter.

re: Timberwolf's Madden Diary - Green Bay Packers

Game 2 Preview: St. Louis Rams (1-0) at Green Bay Packers (1-0)

This game has plenty of sub plots to it. Among them include:

1) The maturing of Cade Simon - Last year, the Rams defeated the Packers 23-9 in the season opener when then-rookie Cade Simon threw 3 interceptions in his debut, 2 of them returned for TD's.

"I remember that game well and have learned from it," said Simon in an interview yesterday. "I admit I was nervous playing in my first NFL game."

Simon since has had a year to learn the offensive system of Ken Wisenhunt and will be a much better quarterback this year and is expected not to throw nowhere near as many interceptions as he did last year (19 INT's in 7 games before his season ending injury). Simon also has a running back to take the pressure off him in the form of Charlie Fisher, so hopefully for the Packers, that will result in a Packers victory.

2) Mr. Rodgers returns to his neighborhood

Aaron Rodgers in a Rams uniform will be a strange sight for Packers fans

Last year the Packers traded Aaron Rodgers to the Miami Dolphins for a first round pick, a third round pick and QB Pat White. Rodgers since has left the Dolphins via free agency and signed with the Rams in the offseason.

Unlike the Brett Favre debacle a few years ago, Rodgers holds no ill will towards the Packers for their decision to trade him to the Dolphins rather than extend his contract.

"I had no problem with that trade," said Rodgers in an interview. "They thought they had a good quarterback in Cade Simon and I think he is still a good quarterback despite his struggles as my replacement last year. I know it's all business. Nothing personal."

Rodgers, having played against the Packers defense in practice when he was a Packer, should be familiar against them, but defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will no doubt have a few tricks up his sleeve.

How will the fans react to seeing Rodgers in a Rams jersey? Because Rodgers left the Packers on good terms, most likely he will get a warm reception.

Overall, it should be a good game with both teams evenly matched. The game will be played tomorrow with the results to be posted within 24 hours.
