Each Silent Hill game has used a similar concept for the creepy "Otherworld" dimension: A dark, warped, rust and blood covered hellhole (not counting Angela's firey "otherworld" in SH2) ...



Buuuut Silent Hill: Shattered Memories has a new style for the "Otherworld". Instead of blood and rust, we have snow and ice this time around...



According to the makers, the snow and ice will factor into the game's story. They haven't just randomly added it:

My first thoughts were that it was toned down and kiddy-ised for the Wii, but I dunno now. I kinda like it, I'm sure it'll make some sense to the story and have meaning to it.

Not as scary as blood and rust though...

I prefer the gore and rust too. It's so horribly disgusting. You really feel sorry for the poor bastards who get stuck in that situation. SH4 did it best imo...going deeper and deeper into Walter's Otherworld to the point where you had no idea if Henry would ever be able to escape even if he did somehow defeat Walter. Exploring the apartment filled with ghosts, the parts of the building that seemed alive, and the ridiculous amount of gore, rot and blood. It was surreal.

The ice and snow isn't as creepy, although it does give off a very cold and isolated feeling. I feel cold just looking at those screens.

Anyway yeah, blood and rust ftw. But the sound effects are epic, especially sounds like you're lost in a winter-world, with the pitter-patter of your feet on the snow, and the cold wind. Oooo.

Ohh...Climax could totally use that to their advantage. That would be creepy if you're wandering around an isolated snowy world and you keep hearing creatures' footsteps in the snow, the wind blowing, and all those creepy noises that seem to pop up when it snows. lol

I think the icy setting is creepier tbh. I think the old setting was scarier, but I think the icy setting is vastly more creepy, and has a lot more potential tbh.

I like a lot that screenshots, it will surely be one of the best usual videogames to level of graphics for Nintendo Wii.

I'm not too sure about the new Otherworld. The transformations look interesting, but still I don't think the Creep/Disturbing factor will be the same. Maybe the possibility of slipping on the Ice while running for your life might add something to the game though.

I prefer Blood & Rust but the Icy Other world does look cool & Creepy don't know how it will affect the game but should be good.

I like it. I think it's good to see such a stylistic change after the game was left to yet another developer, unlike with Homecoming. They will have to be imaginative to make it creepy like the blood/rust effects but surely it is possible. Lots of ice spikes could be made to look pretty menacing and the ice could be distorted in many ways, like with strange reflections.

I liked the rust and blood scared the crap out of me when I was younger but the new Otherworld looks cool too (no pun intended) and gives a new feel to the Silent Hill series can't wait till it comes out.

Me too. But it is supposed to be a remake of the original.
