Wait, you can get Skarmory in the original Gold? Wait. Let me rephrase that. WHERE can you get Skarmory in the original Gold/Silver/Crystal? I mean, I knew it was there, but I didn't know where to find it, since I saw it in the manga.

Skarmory can rarely be found on Route 45 in Silver and Crystal. Gold players have to find someone that's willing to share. The same thing applies in Soul Silver and Heart Gold except it's an uncommon instead of a rare.
