You can always resave JPGs as PNGs. When you click "Save As" to save a picture, go to the box where the file name is located. Simply type .png at the end and save. It will be converted to PNG format.

Best bet for backgrounds - google images. Eg, in a Fire round, type in "Cool fire backgrounds". Always works.

Google images is a great source for backgrounds. It's all I've ever used when making TC's. Then sometimes if the colours not right I've tweaked it on fireworks, but yeah other than that just Google it.
