The only tricks I've tried is to send my scout all over other islands to just walk around and find treasure but it usually is only a little bit of money.

I also have thought about, but haven't tried, developing all the technology and then killing off or tearing down most of the houses, shutting down all the settler support functions before I build my armys just to stop the bleeding.

Tip #1 As soon as your population "levels up" (changes from like pioneer to settler for example) don't build anything for the next level and just build a little bit of farms and whateverelse to support your bigger population and then hopefully you will be making a little bit of money just put the game on the fastest speed and wait until you get your desired result( that can take a very long time by the way)

Tip #2 Build lots of houses in a rather neat fashion (put 4 houses in a square)and make kind of a grid and then you can put your basic buildings in a square also such as

MMMMTTTT T=tavern
MMMMTTTT C=chapel/church
CCCCSSSS P=path
CCCCSSSS S=school
CCCCSSSS
PPPPSSSS
you can substitue the school for a fire brigade and put the school in the place of one of your houses you can also put your doctor in the place of one of your houses. I do not recommend you put your church or the university in place of your houses as it does not matter where you put it and the chapel and school update themselves anyway make your houses close together so u dont have to build very many public buildings more to come later hope that helps some what
