Morrowind noob... |
|
I just busted out an old copy i found. I haven't ever played morrowind before...
How are supposed to know if you are stealing something? There aren't any red hand icons that I can see.

Well, thievery isn't really one of Morrowind's strong points...
So to be frank, you don't know. If you steal something and the you see some one running away from you, get the *bleep* outta there! -------------------

Well that sucks... I am one of those people you find searching all the random crates around town... fighter's guild, you wouldn't think there would be an owned crate in there with armor in it??? I take the stuff, and I see 2 boxes pop up "your crime was reported" and "you have been banned from the fg"

quote ikiyahmaeMorrowind requires you to use your senses and more importantly your head. It isn't anything bad but with Oblivion it hands everything to you on a plate with no real consequences. Morrowind on the other hand does in fact require you to look around in every direction before taking something. You still have the "sneak icon" and it works exactly how the Oblivion eye does. If the sneak icon shows up in your HUD then you are sneaking and safe, if it disappears then someone can see you. Oh and a tip...use chameleon and not invisibility if you are stealing etc. Invisibility is mainly to escape tight battles and dodge people ------------------- ![]() ![]()

I find that Telekinesis is a useful effect for thievery in Morrowind.

Generally, if it's in a building that IS NOT full of monsters, it's illegal to take it.
If something is in a cave it's USUALLY fine to take it, but be careful. There are a couple of exceptions to this. Basically, you should quicksave before taking things. -------------------

Save before taking things.
If you see a message like this "Your crime has been reported" "Stop, thief!" "Help!" If you steal something, time to load. If you haven't saved in a while, maybe you can pay the fine. Maybe you can get away with it. -------------------

No, the game doesn't tell you before you steal something in Morrowind. No, your items aren't marked in your inventory if you're a theif and you've stolen half the things you "own".
You can, however, view your bounty at the bottom of the character stats screen. Your bounty can be cleared by speaking with a guard, and paying it. You can also serve jail time, which can have both negative and positive consequences. Jail time can increase and decrease your stats and skills. Paying your fine while you have stolen items in your inventory will cause those items to be confiscated, and relegated to the nearest Imperial evidence chest. The locations of evidence chests can be looked up, but one is in the starting room with Socius Ergala(the man who provides you with your release papers) in Seyda Neen. They are all locked with a 100 pt lock, and usually guarded, so retrieving "your" confiscated items can be quite a pain. I find it easier to just ensure that I move stolen items out of my inventory, rather than trying to keep them. If you trade away a stolen item, the gold or items you get in exchange are treated as yours, and will not be confiscated by guards. You could still have a bounty however. Also, when I go to pay my bounty, I drop all my inventory(save gold) in a crate somewhere, to ensure that if I do have some items that the game considers stolen that I don't know about, they won't be confiscated in the first place. A bounty can also be cleared through the thieves guild, for half price, and without the worry of having stolen items confiscated. ------------------- May the Lord my rock be praised, who trains my hands for battle and my fingers for warfare. He is my faithful love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer. He is my shield, and I take refuge in Him; He subdues my people under me. - Psalm 144:1,2

It's also common sense, if someone is around but facing the other way, you can get away with it.
One time in an Ebony mine, I managed to snuggle 20 pieces of ebony because no one had their eyes on me. Ebony has a value of 200 gold. -------------------

Whenever I steal something I usually either run away REALLY quick, scroll of windform and fly away, or use recall, or just kill whoever tries to come kill me, but thats a last resort.

all you have to do is hold the ctrl button and a small icon will appear at the bottom of the screen if noone is watching. if no icon is there then someone is watcing you. or you can do wat i do:
press ~ button type in "player->additem" (minus quotes) click on the item you want type in the code at the top of the console so it might look like player->additem "ingred_raw_ebony" 1 the one at the end is how ever many of the item you want

GENERALLY
If a friendly NPC is near something. Dont take it. Atleast not while they're watching. I really didnt like stealing things in Oblivion because, nothing was really worth anything. Unless you were in a cave. But even then you had to be like lvl 20 for it to be really good. Stupid Level Scaling. ------------------- Play all night, sleep all day.
