I've been looking at Brokeback's success in this last month, and I have to say with it's whole hype flow it could certainly exceed 100 mil, or at least be a big earner.

Coming up successes I can see Click doint well as Bruce Almighty did, as well as the given PotC: Dead Man's Chest.

I'm surprised all these horror movies continue to have top success. They all sort of look the same to me.

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

In case anyone was watching, Dead Man's Chest is doing very well. No, I mean VERY well. Like so great that people just threw money at them. In addition to breaking the top 35 domestic ever in 10 days, it is now the 11th most successful movie [USA], at just under 370 million gross. It should finish up nicely somewhere between Star Wars III [7th, with 380mil] and [6th, 403mil], and place equally high on the worldwide charts.

Now, the wait for Snakes on a Plane, which will obviously own everything in a matter of hours.

PotC 2 is now 7th place in the US, and 12th place in the world. its almost made $400 million in just the US alone. now thats damn impressive.

theres no chance Snakes will come close. in fact, i will eat my own stomach if Snakes beats Dead Man's Chest for opening weekend records.

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

Snakes only made 6 million dollars on friday. Pirates broke 100 in... two days. So I guess that's a no. Snakes was more fun to say you liked anyways.

Pirates actually just passed 400 million, which means it should pass spiderman [403mil] with ease and close at 6th position for the USA. @_@

Do those records include DVD sales? If so then that is kind of *bleep*ed up since Dead Man's Chest is still in theaters.

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

Snakes is only going to make an estimated $15.25 million, which includes about $1.4 million from Thursday night screenings. That will be #1 for the weekend but below expectations. And it's only #1 because of the Thursday numbers, otherwise Talladega Nights would have been #1 again with $14.1 million.
Estimated weekend top 10:
1. "Snakes on a Plane," $15.25 million.
2. "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," $14.1 million.
3. "World Trade Center," $10.8 million.
4. "Accepted," $10.1 million.
5. "Step Up," $9.9 million.
6. "Barnyard: The Original Party Animals," $7.5 million.
7. "Little Miss Sunshine," $5.7 million.
8. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," $5 million.
9. "Material Girls," $4.6 million.
10. "Pulse," $3.5 million.
Final figures are due out tomorrow.

Only if they're bootlegged copies shot in Thailand and the like.

Pirates 2 Update

The film now has a domestic gross of 419.9 million, 6th for america. We can always hope it will eclipse Star Wars Ep. 1 [431.1 mil], but that's a lot for this point in release.

Worldwide, it sits at 3rd, having recently passed the 1 billion mark it is at 1.04 billion, unlikely to pass RotK [1.12 bil].

This is really really good, but it makes me wonder how Titanic did so damn well.

What could be more exciting is At World's End, assuming they don't screw up. We can certainly expect a near-equal weekend.

1.Grudge 2-$20,825,300
2.The Departed-$19,034,294
3.Man of the Year-$12,299,380

Gah! I was really hoping The Departed would make it at number one for 2 weeks in a roll. I was also mad that when I saw it for a 2nd time this weekend my theater moved it to the smallest room they have. Gayyyyy.

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

I guess it was the R-rating that was the killer in the end, even though the lead margin was pretty small. Good word of mouth should keep The Departed much more stable than The Grudge 2, though. I mean it practically has a cult of a following at this point.

-------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- --------------------

Figured with the idea of Lavitz's thread, trying to spark some life back into this thread and the fact I've been waiting years for Redemption to implement a 'poll' feature to the site, how about each week (usually Sunday/Monday) we update this thread with the upcoming theatrical releases and discuss how well each will do, which ones we will be checking out and just try to get an awareness out of what's coming out altogether. Then after the weekend is over, we update the box office results and continue the cycle.

I'm anxiously anticipating SAW III, which I know will be #1 at the box office. Although it's the only 'big' release, it still has some tough competition such as The Prestige, The Departed and Open Season is still holding on strong in the Top 5. Anyone elses thoughts?

Saw III will easily come out number one.

Personally, I'll skip it and go watch Catch A Fire. Obvious reasons.

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

No arguments here, Saw III will clearly dominate the box office this weekend. Probably the most anticipated film in this second half of the year. Definitely gonna come up strong with big numbers.

My guess....$23mil and some change.

I see the top 5 coming out to be:

Saw III
The Prestige
The Departed
Flags of Our Fathers
Open Season/Catch a Fire
(could go either way, I don't see Flicka taking the spot, or anything below it rising above.

Dude, Saw II alone made over $31M it's opening weekend. SAW III will easily make that number, if not more.
