re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

The Departed has stayed strong in comparison to just about everything else; I predict another close weekend with The Prestige.

That said,

1. Saw III - 34mil
2. The Prestige - 11mil
3. The Departed - 10mil
4. Flags of Our Fathers - 8mil
5. Catch a Fire - 7mil

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

VERY NICE GMW. Saw III - 34.3mil & The Departed - 9.8mil

1. Saw 3 $ 34.3 Million | NEW
2. The Departed $ 9.8 Million | $ 91.1 Million
3. The Prestige $ 9.6 Million | $ 28.8 Million
4. Flags of our Fathers $ 6.4 Million | $ 19.9 Million
5. Open Season $ 6.1 Million | $ 77.4 Million
6. Flicka $ 4.9 Million | $ 14.1 Million
7. Man of the Year $ 4.7 Million | $ 28.8 Million
8. The Grudge 2 $ 3.3 Million | $ 36 Million
9. Marie Antoinette $ 2.9 Million | $ 9.8 Million
10. Running with Scissors $ 2.6 Million | NEW

Catch A Fire didn't even make top 10

But the black guy in it (I forget his name) is said to be getting good reviews (as well as the movie itself) and could be eligible for an acting nomination. I'd expect to see it appear in the top 10 next week.

Kids weekend. Borat will get dominated by Flushed Away and well Flushed Away. The Santa Clause 3 will get within the Top 5, maybe even the Top 3, but it doesn't look appealing at all. In fact, with the exception of Flushed Away, none of this weeks releases do.

I blame guys like Lavitz for films like Flicka making top ten while Catch a Fire gets the shaft.

Damn the Departed went back up to #2, the word is really getting around about it, hell I may even see it a third time. But for this weekend it may be backed down though by Flushed Away, Santa Clause 3, and Borat(will be defiantly seeing it this weekend).

Lots of buzz around Borat, but I seriously doubt it even hits 20mil.

Edit: Very surprising weekend for Borat indeed.

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

It made the cover of Entertainment Weekly and has good reviews from Time Magazine.

It's hard to tell just because everyone went to see a film this weekend with Saw, and all the people with kids will see Flushed Away next weekend. Which is a pity, because it looks like crap.

I'd guess

Flushed Away: $23mil
Borat: $15mil
The Escape Clause: $5mil

Wow, Borat dominated at 4x as less theaters than Santa Clause 3. I heard Flushed Away was horrible. The same slapstick gag after the next. Not really sure who will come out on top for this weeks' releases because the only one my theater is getting in is that shitty The Return. Which btw, doesn't it look awfully similar to Sarah Michelle Gellar's other crappy movie about the same thing, The Grudge? Harsh Times looks great, and I wish I could see the Night of the Living Dead 3D, but sadly I dont live close enough to a theater showing it.

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

Ah, so The Return is the Gellar movie. I saw it was one of the ones opening this weekend at my theater but I had no clue what it was. Were also getting Borat this weekend, alongside A Good Year and Stranger Than Fiction. I would see Harsh Times first but were not getting it. I'll def see Borat, and maybe StF, i'll have to see the reviews on it first, but it does look good.

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

Hard to tell with the upcoming weekend which will come out on top. I really don't see any of them being number one. A Good Year isn't appealing to everyone. I don't think Harsh Times has enough buzz (but it looks damn good)...STF has Ferrell going for it (with the performance of his career, I've heard) and ppl love Ferrell (for some reason). The Return...definitely not the best movie coming out this weekend, but might get a lot of kids to go see it.

If you ask me, which I'm sure none of you will, I'd say Borat will keep it's spot from last week.

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

I was way off last week, haha. Man, if Borat was in the same amount of theaters I wonder if it would have hit the $100mil mark?

For this week, I definitely think Borat will maintain number one just because I think it's going to be released wide this weekend to something like 2000 cinemas. Stranger Than Fiction is getting a lot of good buzz too.

So my call:

Borat $35mil
Stranger Than Fiction $23mil
The Return $18mil
Escape Clause $17mil

Man Borat hasn't come out yet in Canada, at least not in Empire Theatres Chain. Premiere is on Friday. I can't wait. *Rubs hands together. hehehe*

re: Weekend Releases & Box Office Report

Borat is estimated to have made nearly $30mil again this weekend, making it number 1. That would make Borat's two-week gross of nearly $70mil. Link

The only new release to be estimated in the top 5 so far is Stranger than Fiction, sitting in 4th with $14mil. Actual weekend gross will be posted tomorrow afternoon.
