Winnie the Pooh Returns
Disney announces brand-new feature for 2011.
by Chris Tilly, IGN UK

UK, September 10, 2009 - John Lasseter was in London this morning, and the Disney/Pixar's Cheif Creative Officer made several major announcements, the biggest of which was the company's plans to bring Winnie the Pooh back to the big screen.

In 2011, the company plans to release Winnie the Pooh, a brand-new feature length adventure based on an amalgamation of five of AA Milne's original stories.

Lasseter revealed that the film will retain the artistic style - watercolour backgrounds and all - of Uncle Walt's original shorts, with Burny Mattinson, who worked on the 1964 Winnie Pooh and the Honey Tree, serving as lead story artist on the project.

As for specific detail, the film will revolve around Pooh himself, although there will be a sequence in which Eeyore loses his tail and his friends try various replacements, including a cuckoo clock.

As for new characters, Lasseter announced that the film will feature Rabbit's friends and relatives, who apparently aren't as socially aware as the other residents of Hundred Acre Wood.

Winnie the Pooh is set to hit screens in the Spring of 2011.

TLA thought about making a thread for this but then he remembered that I make threads for all the crap films coming out, so here I am. I didn't want to let anyone down.

re: Winnie The Pooh

This is the first announcement from Lasseter/Pixar that has raised doubts in me...why would they want to do this? There's nothing wrong with the original Winnie-the-Pooh. Taking their cue from Lucas and Spielberg to rape my childhood, yet again...*sighs*

Because Lasseter wants to bring back the way of animation was from the old Disney days as we know them.
Hand Drawn animation, in the classic Disney way was kinda losing it's touch in this decade.
They wanna bring back some life into the classic Disney animation.
I Think it's a good idea that they do this, and Lasseter. aswell.
Lasseter even organised a Goofy Short Toon before like they showed it in theaters like in the old days before the featured movie was shown, hand drawn animated, aswell.

Lasseter wants to keep what Walt Disney has left behind alive, or atleast tries to revive it back.
3D and Computer animation is a step forward, but sometimes people do hunger for a bit of that old classical way of hand drawn animation, the fairy tale stories, and even seeing the well known Disney characters in Hand Drawn Animation style, instead of computer animated.
And I think Lasseter kinda had that realisation, at the time when Bolt was in production, known as American Dog first before the overhaul to Bolt, to make the characters in Bolt a bit more Disney-ish, in which they even gave the backgrounds the kinda look like they were painted on with a brush.

Now he's trying to get that old feeling back in Hand Drawn animation again, which seems like a good thing to me.
Especially, since they hired someone that also worked on Winnie The Pooh in 1964 back then, as the lead Story artist for this project now, to get that same thing back.

And I'm also kinda hungry for some of that old Disney stuff again, the way it used to be, so I hope they will get that back again, atleast they are trying for it, that's good news.

re: Winnie The Pooh

i love the old movie where pooh tries to trick the bees into thinking he's a raincloud so he can steal their honey.
if they made another one, i'd watch it. they did well with the syndicated series that was on the disney channel until they decided to only show horrible programs.

I'm just a little black rain cloud
Hovering under the honey tree
I'm only a little black rain cloud
Pay no attention to little me

Oh everyone knows that a rain cloud
Never eats honey, no not a nip

I'm just floating around
Over the ground
Wondering where I will drip

Never eats honey, no not a nip

I'm just floating around
Over the ground

Perhaps, but will it actually sell? Kids these days will not understand the animation, and I do not see adults flocking to see this, unless they have kids with them.

I think it probably will. Winnie the Pooh is such an iconic, classic character that he's part of our cultural collective subconscious. Kids will want to see it, and as opposed as I am to the idea of a remake of this classic, I'll probably take my kids if they want to go.

It doesn't matter if it sells or not, that's not the point.
You either use computer animation or traditional animation to make this Winnie The Pooh movie, so which way they do it doesn't make it less or more different on how to tell the story visually.
They're trying to get that same feeling back in animation.

The World wants 3D, sure, but it's kinda the feeling of it that matters.
There's a feeling on bringing the right kind of animation to a story.
Winnie The Pooh as a character came to life in Hand Drawn animation, changing Winnie to a 3D computer animated character doesn't really give out that same feeling when you see him in a 3D Computer animated movie.

If I have to choose, I pick for Hand Drawn animation, because that's giving out the right feeling, and also the right way of a Winnie The Pooh Movie to be shown.

Computer animation is something new and unique to show animation on, but some things can't be changed, you can change it, but it just wont feel the same anymore.

Sure, the kids might not understand that animation things and all that, but Disney doesn't actually make their movies for kids, their intention is for everyone to enjoy it.

Ofcourse, Winnie The Pooh seems more to be a kind of character, that mostly kids could enjoy watching.

But, hey, even I like to watch a Winnie The Pooh movie if I see it on TV.

The last movie about Tigger was pretty good.

re: Winnie The Pooh

i don't get how people are iffy about them going back to traditional animation. cgi was neat at first (monsters inc was okay), but i'm sick of seeing it. i really like disney's oldschool style, and i'd like to see them return to it - sketchy lines, painted backgrounds, and all that good stuff. if new-age kids don't like winnie the pooh as everyone else before them did, there's something wrong.

re: Winnie The Pooh

New Winniw The Pooh? New hand-drawn Disney movie? *bleep* YEAH! I am so going to see this!

I am personally bothered that the art of well made hand-drawn animated movies is dying. CG movies are good but I personally prefer hand-drawn animation. Hopefully this will do good and spark other people to make hand-drawn animated movies again.

It should be live action, so it can set up for an upcoming movie...
