Quoted for brutal insensitivity.

Meh...I honestly don't know, but I'm afraid they're milking the Tolkien universe a bit too much...

On a side note, Michael J Fox would kill as Bilbo. Come on, you know I'm right.

re: The Hobbit

Really this is the only other thing besides the main trilogy. All the other stuff I think can't be made into any other media.

re: The Hobbit

Well they can, if you are talking about the histories/silmarillion (which of course you are). It would just take good acting, a world class director and some super set/costume/prop making like in the trilogy.

nah, he isnt short and quirky enough. Tom Cruise is though.

and if i remember right, the Silmarillion is made up of a bunch of short stories and histories about Middle Earth, right? you cant really make that into a movie so much without making up a ton of extra filler that Tolkien didnt make.

Really interesting here, a live chat that they had with Del Toro and Jackson, pretty cool so check it out.

re: The Hobbit

That was a great read. I'm glad to to hear they are doing the Hobbit itself in one film and not two. Having the second film as a gap filler and bridger to the Trilogy will be great.

Guillermo sounds like he has a really cool vision of Middle Earth too. I'm so excited *claps hands gayly*

I wouldn't be surprised if they made more of the prequels later in time. Like the Silmarilion, however would it be classed as overkill?

re: The Hobbit

The Silmarillion actually contains a series of stories not just one. Unless of course you mean making a film out of each story?

Perhaps, I think they'll stop after Hobbit.

re: The Hobbit

Guillermo del Toro was interviewed on the status of the film among other questions. Fantastic read. Here's a bit on the creatures, particularly Smaug.

quote
You love creating your creatures and obviously The Hobbit offers some great opportunities. There’s the dragon Smaug, the spiders of Mirkwood, the Wargs, Beorn the bear-man…

The way I phrased it to Weta, I said we would keep the DNA in the same gene pool as the Rings trilogy, but that we would generate a different type of character. For example, in the trilogy most of the creatures are brutish or inarticulate.

In The Hobbit, the creatures speak: Smaug has beautiful lines of dialogue; the Great Goblin has beautiful lines of dialogue; many creatures do. So we had to design them with a different approach because you are not just designing things that are scary.

I also wanted some of the monsters in The Hobbit to be majestic.

I wanted the Wargs to have a certain beauty so that you don't have a massively clear definition: what is beautiful is good and what is ugly is not. Some of the monsters are absolutely gorgeous.

Smaug won’t be like the dragons in Reign Of Fire, say. Was it a big challenge to communicate his character?

I think one of the designs I’m the proudest of is Smaug. Obviously he took the longest.

It’s actually still active: we’re finishing his colour palette and a little bit of the texture. But the bulk of the design took about a year, solid. It’s because of the unique features of the dragon.

Early in production I came up with a very strong idea that would separate Smaug from every other dragon ever made. The problem was implementing that idea. But I think we’ve nailed it.
It was far too much to quote, especially when he started talking about spiders and the epic scale of the battles and how LOTR set a standard that was met and failed with films afterwards (he specifically mentions Troy and Narnia). They definitely know what they are doing with this, even though I had complete faith in del Toro to begin with, but this interview just reassured these two upcoming films are going to be absolutely amazing when they come out.

Awesome. I don't know about beautiful Wargs though. I hope they're actually more like wolves, instead of hyenas (LoTR). I've read The Hobbit like four times. <3

May I just say that Peter Jackson has lost an incredible amount of weight!?!

And I have always had the 15 birds in 5 fir trees scene mapped out in my head. I hope they do it slightly similar to how I've always envisioned it.

re: The Hobbit

I love that he is going to take the dialogue rout to portraying the film rather than all out action. The Hobbit had some awesome scenes that were just conversations and by the sounds of things he is going to want to try and show them in full rather than trim them.

I know what you mean. I have Beorn's house and the dining scene envisioned.
