I'm probly gonna go see this, perhaps because in my last year of high school we did a unit on phantom of the opera in english class and parts of it became dumb inside jokes (oh no monsieur! the punjab lasso!) and whatnot. But seriously, I saw the trailer and it looks pretty cool. But I do have a question: is this just a normal movie or is it a musical still?

I just returned from seeing this at the local theater with a few friends. I won't go over the story as it should be quite known, but, suffice it to say, if you don't have a taste for classical musicals, this movie probably won't please you. Despite the beautiful acting, despite the special effects, despite the touching story, it is still a personification of the genre - long winded and quite boring for those who don't have an appreciation for it. I can't tell you how many times I found my friends and I counting how many times the phantom appeared to have stopped singing, only to hear him start up again spouting irrelevant dialog that neither furthers the story nor captivates the audience.
I think reviving this play in the form a movie was a bad idea, hearing a beautiful voice singing onstage captures your attention, hearing someone lip-sync "I am walking through this door" in a movie does not. Still, a good musical (if that's your thing) that does the original play justice, just don't be suprised two hours into the movie (this movie is around 2.4 hours long) if you find yourself out the door bored and feeling you have wasted your money as I did.

i totally agree, if you dont like musicals, you probably wont like the film either. however, i saw the musical about 2 years ago, and i really enjoyed the film. some of it really was beautiful and Emmy Rossun has a great voice, but im really not sure if it was a good idea to make in into a movie. and yeah, the beginning is amazing.

I just came back from watching the film tonight, it was by far one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen, very well done. I am a fan of musicals, the opera and classical, and since there is no opera house (or classical or that matter) in my area, this was the closest thing I've ever seen to the real thing.
I hate to say this with Martin (Can't spell his last name) coming out with a film this year, but I'm going to have to say this well set a new standard for this year's "Movie of the Year" -------------------

I've never liked Musicals or anything of the sort before but after I saw this it became my favorite movie. The music is just beautiful too.

Just got the DVD because Comcast OnDemand is fubar and I couldn't get it there.
Sorely dissapointed. In perhaps the most ironic thing I have ever seen they cast a 'hunky scot' to play the Phantom. A man who CANNOT SING AT ALL (even comparing this man to Michael Crawford is an insult to Michael). Christine is good, Raoul is good, Carlotta is good.. Everyone but the PHANTOM, the namesake of the play, has a good voice and by and large hits their roles. The phantom can't sing, can't even hit the powerful notes the phantom's role demands without it simply sounding like he is shouting or his voice is going to break. What little raw acting roles for the phantom there were (taunting raoul in the graveyard, laughing and generally having a personality when he messes with Carlotta's voice) are cut completely. The fool almost sounds like he's trying to impersonate david bowie during some of his songs, whispershouting instead of singing. The entire masquerade sequence is ruined by the director's penchant for what I can only even describe as new age drivel (personally I'm suprised there wasn't more NEON in this film) and is played far, FAR too fast. WHY THE HELL ARE THEY DOING THE ROBOT during this sequence? I had my hopes up during the first few sequences, right up until the phantom first revealed himself in the mirror. All downhill from there. I swear I want to slap Andrew Lloyd Weber with Joel Schumacher's still beating heart for letting the latter mess this one up. ------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() "If you want to know the true nature of a man, give him power." -Abraham Lincoln

It has a few really good songs, The Music of the Night especially, but overall, it's just average neo-classical music. And I must agree, the phantom has a pretty shitty voice for his position.
Nightwish covered the theme song 10 times as well as the original. Tarja Turunen should have been enlisted in the cast of the movie...that would have made up for the phantom. ------------------- My Online Modeling Gallery
