Best ROMAN Faction |
|
OK we've all been arguing about this in an other thread so lets start here so some other users don't get confused, Julii are the best since they are in the best place to expand for example when I play as the Julii I quickly take Carlis, Illyria and Solona which means I have easy access to Carthage and, Greece and Macedon. During my first 10 turns I have conquered Carthage, Thapsus, Lilbaeum, some of the Gallic towns and some Greek and Macedonian.
Macedonian are not that hard to deal with due to their slow moving spearmen, however their cavalry is one to be reckoned with hence Brutii=EASY! this is also true for Greece. Scpii=Medium, seeing as they Carthaginians at Carthage, Caralis, Thapsus are incredibly week and small, alas Egypt - if allowed to develop - is a ruthless enemy (Never trust the Numidians The Julli on the other hand are quite a hard faction as someone rightly pointed out that the Northern places are quite wealthless and slow hence the reason for the tactics given at the top, consequently I restrict the Scipii and Brutii to 2 regions at most meaning that they usually have no roe than 2 full stack armies Phew that took a while! Peace Out!!! ------------------- ![]() Can You Play?

I enjoy all the Roman factions evenly. They all have their little differences and play styles and they all appeal to me. Roman culture and history is just so engrossing I can't help but not like them all.

I really like the Brutii. They're in close proximity to Carthage, so I tend to send fleets and armies ahead of the Scipii, capture Carthage and Thapsus, and I stunt Scipii's growth very early.

Brutii, easily unlock The Greek Cities early. Scipii have the problem of Egypt in Africa and Julii have the problem of the gauls and germans in Europe, the barbarians are also a problem because they're known for breaking alliances with the romans.

The only problem I encountered with Greece was when I invaded them with the Julii in my first ever campaign. I was too impatient to sit out the seige so I stormed the town and ended up fighting in the middle of the city against phalanx units. It's fine meeting them in open battle where you can out-manoeuvre them, but they cut my army to ribbons in the city! It was the worst defeat I'd ever suffered (and still have thankfully!)

The barbarians the Julii have to fight are some of the easiest fights in the game, their weaknesses are so obvious
The Greek cities are strong but their best unit, the Phalanx can as some of you mentioned, be easily outmanouvered. Carthage have a well balanced army and the most broken unit in the game. Each Roman faction has the same well balanced army, but by looking at their initial opponent you can see who'll have an easier time in battle, economywise it all depends on how well you can handle your money. Also I'm not assuming that anyone here either sucks or is the strategy god, I stated which campaign is the easiest based on how quickly each faction should be able to defeat and conquer all of their initial enemie's cities, a few well trained romans are better than a crapload of hulking barbarians. Which one is best though, I'd say Brutii > Carthage > Scipii> Julii > Greece > Gaul ------------------- FIGHT ME Oblivion Blue Mage Morrowind Blue Mage

Well it is clear that at the beginning of the game the Romans have the best infantry: one unit of Hastati can clearly hold its own against any other unit in the game. Therefore we cannot say that the Gauls had better infantry than the Carthaginans and so on. In fact the only bad thing about being Roman is the S*** cavalry which obviously changes later on in the game.
quoteYeah very true, but I think the Greeks though brilliant if you have tons of spearmen with superior cavalry on the flanks, are just as crap since they are easy to out manoeuvre. However something I do find weird is the the fact that the Greeks, the father of the spear, is outdone by the Macedonian pike men! - Why is that? Anyway no ones changed my mind I still think Julii are the best Roman Faction thus far. Peace! ------------------- ![]() Can You Play?

The bad thing about using the Julii though is that the Gauls only really use about 4 different units and it gets a bit dull fighting them.

quote knightofmanaThe Macedonian phalanx has more spears that are much longer than the greeks(not sure if its historically accurate). However when I was The Greek Cities I had 5 hoplite phalanxes and i put them into a pentagon, they fought off 1200 macedons of levy pikemen, militia hoplites and lancers!

Spartan Hoplites are the best units in the game. However they take 2 turns to create.
