Battery Problem?

My car hasn't been driven in quite some time. I only drive it like once a week or less. Last night I went to start the car, but wouldn't start, it just kept clicking, and the interior lights started getting dimmer after awhile. This was the first time this happened, and it was freezing outside, so I thought I'd pour some hot water over the battery to remove any acid and to see if it helps, and it did. The interior light was working perfectly now, but the car still wouldn't start, it would just keep clicking. I wasn't going anywhere important, so I just forgot about it and decided to try and jump start it in the morning (this was at like 4am). So today I went to try and start it, and it wouldn't do anything at all, no interior lights, no clicking noise, nothing. I jump started the car, and it worked perfectly. Went for a 30 minute drive, got home and parked it so if I had trouble again I could jump start it. Luckily I parked like that, because 2 seconds after turning the engine off my brother told me he wanted to drive it. I tried to start the engine, and nothing happened, no clicking noise and no interior lights either. Wtf? Is this just a simple battery issue or is this something more serious?

re: Battery Problem?

Could be a couple things.

Battery could be dead. This could be because of a bad battery or bad alternator.

Battery cables could be lose. Bad connection and the car won't start and the alternator won't be able to keep the battery charged properly.

re: Battery Problem?

If it's not loose cables then it's the battery.

Go to your local Advance Auto or Autozone so you can get a free charging system diagnostic. Chances are the battery is so shot that it won't take a charge from the alternator anymore, the diagnostic test will tell you what volts your alterantor is putting out, between 13.4-14.4 is what you're looking for.

But again, 99% chance your battery is shot because a car doesn't run for a half hour on hopes and dreams.

re: Battery Problem?

It could be the alternator too. That's what happened to me recently with my old S-10. At first, it would just click, and then, it wouldn't at all. But yeah, just take it to autozone and have them text the battery and alternator. They'll check both for free.

WHAT THE HELL IS AUTOZONE?!?!

I live in Australia. But yeah, I'm really hoping it's just the battery and nothing more serious. Battery's are pretty damn cheap.

It's an auto parts store. But it's in the United States, which is probably why you've never heard of it.

Batteries are a lot cheaper than an alternator, but still not "cheap". If the battery just died randomly, there's a really good chance it could be the alternator. But if the car hasn't been driven in a while, it's most likely just the battery.

re: Battery Problem?

I guess brownsrock didn't see the part where you said you DROVE it for a half hour. Like I said, cars don't just run on hopes and dreams, the alternator MUST be working in order for the car to run if the battery is dead. From my reading, the battery was dead because the car wouldn't start itself, so it was jumped. It ran fine after it started, drove for a half hour and wouldn't start as soon as he shut it off at home.

Common sense points to the battery.

But shit, since brownsrock is so adament on the alternator being bad, just go ahead and replace that.

I did see that, which is why I suggested that it is the alternator, because my truck did THE SAME EXACT THING!. I turned the key. and it didn't even budge. No clicking sound, no nothing. I jump started it, the truck fired up. I drove it up to auto zone, had the alternator tested (and battery too, which I got a new one since it was under warranty, cause it was only 11 months old), and it was the alternator. I drove back home, and put in the new alternator. My total drive time after the jump start was probably about 25 or so minutes.

So maybe... just maybe... I am right, since I had just experienced the same thing.

It's only yahoo answers, but still. It shows other people know you can drive on a bad alternator as well for so long. Quite a few people say 30-90 minutes.

1 2

Granted, not all the answers are good, but there's quite a few that are.

re: Battery Problem?

Um even if my battery was dead and I was jump started, my truck would just run till I turned it off. Idk bout the whole 30-90min deal... really you need a load tester from someone to see if your putting out enough cold cranking amps or you could just replace the battery with someones n call it a day.

They were in that range of time. Some said an hour, some said longer, and some shorter. For some reason the 3rd link isn't there either.

(start of sarcasm) It makes no sense to get the alternator tested when the battery dies. That's right. Makes complete logical sense. Why didn't I not think of it. (end of sarcasm)

I really don't even care. If I'm not allowed to be right (by you guys), just so you can (by you guys), then why even try? I even provide proof, that I can just possibly be right, but still, I am denied, even though it's logical. I don't even know why I try anymore in this forum. Even after my own experience, you guys still can't even let it go. Pathetic.

re: Battery Problem?

Its better to be right and sure of yourself, not "possibly"(learned that from this site as a whole). Put your panties back on n go to another sub-forum, your vag is hangin and I think we're over its "possible" diseases of crap posting n pokemon loving banners.

If your car runs without a battery and the voltage doesnt drop below 13.5v (idling) then its safe to say your alternator is doing what it should.

Cheers n good luck to original poster and browns suck horribly this year. (1-7... now thats PATHETIC if you wanna know)

I can see why motor vehicles on gets like what, 11-12 ppd tops, because it's filled with people like you. After I stop posting here, it will probably go down to like 3.

I don't love Pokémon. I've had this banner for a while now. And I am gonna leave it there until I find something better to put there, and at this point in time, there isn't anything better I can find to put there.

He never said if his car was running at 13.5 volts or not. If it isn't then it's definitely the alternator. If not, then just a bad battery. I don't see why you guys make such a big deal of nothing.

They would be better, but their coach is horrible now, and they have gotten rid of most (if not all) of their players that were actually good. And my favorite team doesn't have to be good to admit to liking them. I'm not ashamed to let someone know if I like something or not based on the people around me. Unlike you.

Only reason your posting in this forum is cause you needed someone to contradict your crap posts... so here I am. Id take a permanent ban from this forum before I let you run this place into the ground. Just FYI...
