Vulcan Fury

Now please don't flame me because of this, if I am wrong. It is just a theory, as I do don't have the game, because it is not out in Britain, yet.

Anyway, the boss' in MGS3 are like the boss' in other MGS'. E.G. Vamp is simualr to The Fear, and The End being simular to Sniper Wolf.

So I was trying to find someone like Vulacn Raven, and the only person that came close was, The Fury, becaus they both have heavy weapons, and more interesting, is that I looked up the meaning "Vulcan" in the dictionary, and it is the Roman God or Fire and Metal, and I know there is a time differance in MGS3 and MGS1, but mabye that is Raven, because I have never seen The Furys face, or it is his dad or something.

But then again, I do not have the Game, and could be wrong, so please don't flame me.

Oh, yeah, sorry if this has been found before

re: Vulcan Fury

It's not that it hasn't been found before; it's just that you're looking for correlation that isn't really there. More precisely though, it's that it's painfully obvious that there's a limited number of boss types for this series.

Think back to the original Metal Gear on the MSX, or NES (for greater familiarity, I'll use this version), and its bosses. "Machine-Gun Kid" could be compared to Vulcan Raven. "Black Color" in MG2: Snake's Revenge is roughly comparable to the Ninja in MGS1. Really the types of bosses throughout the series are tailored to the gigantic arsenal of weapons that Snake carries. If you remember back to the original MSX/NES game, it was marketed as a game with most weapons+items.

Simply put, there are only a limited pool of different types of boss Kojima's group could draw upon:

1. Flame Guy - moderate speed, with some sort of flame-thrower, this guy is usually pretty rude. Examples include: Fire Trooper (MG), The Fury (MGS3)

2. Machine-gun Guy - lumbering, slow, and somewhat stupid, this guy packs serious heat and punish "Snake" for any mistakes. Examples are: Machine Gun Kid (MG), Vulcan Raven (MGS1)

3. Ninja Guy - slick bastard with powerful sword and rapier wit to match. Examples are: Black Color (MG2), Ninja (MGS), Solidus (MGS2)

4. Bomb Guy - quirky, nutty, this guy throws/plants bombs for you to dodge/disarm. Examples are: Shotgunner (MG), Red Blaster (MG2), Fatman (MGS2)

5. Sniper Guy - cool, unbending, this guy/gal has a kinship with nature and blends in with the surroundings... to kill you and help the baddies. Examples are: Predator (MG2), Night Sight (MG2), Sniper Wolf (MGS), The End (MGS3)

6. Jumping Guy - crazy, peppy spiderman-like guy who jumps around the screen taunting Snake and peppering him with darts/bullets. Examples are: Coward Duck (MG), The Fear (MGS3)

7. Occult Guy - not content to just throw unorthodox conventional weaponed bosses at Snake, this guy has some bizzare super-natural power that he uses- again, to aid the baddies. Examples are: Psycho Mantis (MGS), Fortune (MGS2), Vamp (MGS2), The Pain (MGS3), The Sorrow (MGS3), Volgin (MGS3)

8. Shootist Guy - a finesse type, this guy relies on deadly accuracy and timing, usually firing only a pistol. Examples are: Twin Shot (MG), Revolver Ocelot (MGS), Olga (MGS2), Young Ocelot (MGS3)

9. Martial Arts Guy - a commando so deadly and confident that he/she'll take you on without any ranged weapons. Usually this goes hand-in-hand with the ability to dodge / be-immune-to bullets. Examples are: Arnold Twins (MG), Ultra-Box (MG2), Gray Fox (MG2), Liquid Snake (MGS), The Boss (MGS3)

10. Tank Thing - slow, powerful, not designed to kill a super-sneaking soldier. Examples include: The Tank (MG), Bulldozer (MG), M1 Tank (MGS)

11. HIND Helicopter - it's big, flys, and shoots missiles and bullets at you. You kill it with your own man-portable rockets. Examples are: HIND-D (MG2), Hind (MGS), Harrier II (MGS2), HIND-A (MGS3)*

12. Metal Gear - the game's namesake, no Metal Gear game is complete without Snake having to destroy this monster. Despite the fact that Snake's mission is invariably to "destroy Metal Gear", Snake usually fails to do so and is forced to battle the thing. Examples are: TX-55 Metal Gear (MG), Metal Gear D (MG2), MG:REX (MGS), MG:RAY (MGS2), Shagohod (MGS3)

*not a boss character
---

Of course not all bosses fit in exactly into each category. I could have lumped Fortune and Volgin in an "Electric Guy" catergory. And this is not an indictment of how poor boss characters are, if their M.O. has been seen in a past MG game (The End's battle alone makes me love MGS3), Kojima does try his hardest to mix it up. This list just provides strong evidence that you have seen, and will continue to see most of the same type of boss characters. Albeit with different back-stories.

Yes, but not really- being that it's a dream. It's another stupid mind trick, like when you fight Psycho Mantis and ooo-ooh, using the second controller !

re: Vulcan Fury

No, thats not only what made me think that The Fury and Vulacn Raven are connected. Mostly is that: Vulacn means Fire God, and the Fury uses Fire, and is similar to him, and why would they name Vulacn Raven "VULCAN" what has a Fire God got to do with him? So mabye that's how he got his name

re: Vulcan Fury

While that's an interesting theory, it just doesn't fit.
*Minor Spoilers*

How would The Fury have come back to life?
How did he remove the burns all over his body?
Why does he look A LOT bigger?
Why does he sound different?
And Why did he switch to a Minigun?

You're trying to find a connection that isn't there. Look at the second word in the meaning of Vulcan - "Metal".

I think too many people take minor similarities in bosses and try to find a family relation (or self-relation).

re: Vulcan Fury

That's all good to, and I said that it could be his dad, and he got the name Vulcan, and it dose not have to mean both Fire and Metal, or the Metal bit could be to his M1 Tank.

Anyway, it's just a thought, I'm not trying to make a link, it is just something that caught me attention

re: Vulcan Fury

if you think about it, they are very alike and very different. raven can handle very low weather without a shirt and likes the cold. on the other hand, the fury likes fire and got burned up.

maybe he didn't die, there could have been a ledge there and took off the jetpack and jumped off. that way, the jetpack would crash and he could launch bombs that look like his face.
