re: 3 great houses |

Each Great House has a specific skill set which favors a certain type of character. If you are playing as a Warrior, your skills are probably most suited to House Redoran. Hlaalu favors Thieves, and Telvanni favors Magic-Users. You don't have to choose the House that is "suited" to your skills; you can join any of the three. However, it may be more difficult to get promoted at higher levels as you must have high skill levels (90+) in at least one Favored Skill. Redoran quests are OK for a combat-oriented character, but they offer little in the way of financial rewards. The majority of the quests have no reward at all. The Redoran stronghold is a little isolated as well. I like House Hlaalu the best---you can make a lot of money and the stronghold is conveniently located close to Balmora. They are all cool, though.

I would agree with rbmoney. If you are very much the warrior type, then Redoran will be the best match for you. You can get some more or less unbiased opinions about the houses just by asking around among people who are not members of any house. Some NPCs will have the great houses as discussion topics, even though they are not members. If you talk to Imperial Legion officers, or Fighters Guild people, for example, (that is, warrior types, like yourself) they will say things like they respect House Redoran the most because Redoran are the true warriors on Morrowind.

Redoran is weak compared to Telvanni. Even Redoran's last resort - Dread emperor mudcrab, is a loser.

Ah, but Telvanni is weak because they plot and scheme against each other. They do not act together. They are like a club for hermits. They all belong to the same house, but they want nothing to do with each other. Redoran is stronger because Redoran is unified, Redoran is an army.

re: 3 great houses |
quote The LudditeThat's true on most occassions but when there's a major threat to House Telvanni, they do unite. Also you get to become Archmagister by securing everyone's vote as an alternative to killing Gothren. That gives the impression of the player uniting Telvanni. Redoran is only unified according to the public, but there are times when councilors plot against each other. Redoran will eventually die out because they won't expand just because the imperials say so. Telvanni will keep growing, growing, growing, and all of Tamriel will de facto become theirs.

re: 3 great houses |
quote gargoyleskyIt is true that the player character can unite Telvanni, but it is also true that the player character can solve Redoran's problems. Bolvyn Venim has provided good leadership to Redoran, but he has let the power go to his head. It is Venim who has taken Athyn Sarethi's son hostage, and it is Venim who is philandering with another council member's wife. He is the one who is scheming, and the other council members don't like it, but they know they cannot defeat Venim in the arena in one-on-one combat. That is how the Redorans would normally solve their disputes, but Bolvyn Venim has the reputation of being unbeatable in the arena. In the end, you must defeat Bolvyn Venim in the arena and replace him as the leader of Redoran. Once that is done, you are the leader of a strong and united Redoran council, and you have restored Redoran's strength. I think that what really happens is that whichever house the player character chooses to lead is ultimately the most powerful house. That houses problems are solved, and there is nobody in either of the other houses that can stand against the Nerevarine once he has reached his/her potential. But it is not the goal of the Nerevarine to make one house dominant over the others. It is the goal of the Nerevarine to unite the great houses, and the Ashlanders as well, just as they had all once been united under Nerevar. Thus, the player character becomes Hortator of the three Great Houses, uniting them under one leader. The Ashlanders, for so long separated from and persecuted by the other Dunmer for their worship of the ancient gods and their rejection of the Tribunal, are brought into the fold as well. Their religious dissent is vindicated by the decline of the false gods of the Tribunal and the rise of the Nerevarine. The dissident priests are able to come out of the shadows, and lead the Temple to a reconciliation with the Ashlanders, and a renewed respect for the old ways and the worship of the ancient gods. So, the ultimate, untold story is that the contention between the three great houses, and also with the Ashlanders, would be at an end. The united Dunmer, with the Nerevarine as their Hortator, would be far more powerful than they had been at any time since the death of Nerevar. They could demand the autonomy they want from the Empire, and thus "cast out the invaders" of their land. Only then would the rest of the Nerevarine prophecies be fulfilled.
