	A character's health will already go over 9,999, but it takes Break HP Limit to have the character have over 9,999 HP in battle and in the menus. ------------------- Fiends! There's nothin' to do but-- But destroy the ship and all go down together!

The game has to store their actual hp from the sum of the HP on the sphere grid. The 9999 limit means in menus and battles you only use 9999 of your hp. If the game limited you to 9999 and didn't store the real amount, equipping an item with break hp limit would make no difference. So it stores 3 amounts, their real hp (sum of hp spheres on the grid), their maximum hp based on the 9999 limit (or their real hp if you have armour with bhpl), and their current hp which can go below their maximum. I think you just misunderstood him.
