Please help!! Did I waste 40 hours of my life?

Hi! I'm afraid I might not be able to finish Final Fantasy X, and I'm about 80% finished. It's my first time playing an RPG and I thought I was doing ok, until after I killed the big fish thing in the water right before Seymour 2.

I've been using a walkthrough, and it says before I try and conquer Seymour again, I should have Hastega and Reflect. I have neither of these spells, and I have a long way to go to get them. I've kind of screwed up the sphere maze by moving the characters in the wrong direction. I DO have some spells, just not those two.

The FAQS always say have your characters overdrive ready. How do you do this? does this mean that I have to purposely get into fights and as soon as they hit overdrive, switch characters? Same with Aeons? It seems like a lot of work, maybe 1-2 hours just preparing for a battle???

Also: I'm on that long hallway 'on the way' to fight Seymour (2) and these 3 robot things keep attacking me. I haven't a clue how to kill them, or what the best characters are. I hear FIREGA is a good spell for this??

Please any tips! I have a feeling I've gotten this far by luck, and none of my characters are strong enough to continue. I made the mistake early in the game of wasting the "move' levels in the sphere grid. I moved the characters around the sphere grid, but never USED the grids to get abilities. I corrected my mistake, but i think my characters are a little weak compared to other players who are at the exact same spot in the game!

Greatly appreciated!!!!

re: Please help!! Did I waste 40 hours of my life?

The best tips i can give you are ones you'll probably find in the walkthrough your're using. Get your character's and Aeon's overdrives up. Takes a little while to do, depending on which overdrive mode you have, but the boss fights take almost no time at all. As for the machina you're trying to kill, i can only suggest that you learn and use Firaga. It is probaly the easiest way to kill them and not waste your overdirve.

re: Please help!! Did I waste 40 hours of my life?

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately, I still haven't a clue what to do.

1) HOW do I get my overdrives? The only way I can think of doing it is to get badly damaged. I don't think I can switch overdrive modes. And if I do have an overdrive, how do I keep it? switch characters, or just not use it (do a regular thing instead)

2) How do I learn a spell? Right now I'm stuck in a hallway between two save points and can't go back. Does this mean I have to run back and forth on this hallway until I build up enough point to get these spells? This could take me probably 10-20 hours of play, fighting the same 3 monsters.

Maybe I'm just an idiot! Anyone who can help, please do. Talk to me like I'm a child! I'm 80% complete, 35-50 hours in, and completely stuck.

re: Please help!! Did I waste 40 hours of my life?

Go to overdrive mode in the menu; you should be able to switch the characters overdrive modes. I'm assuming you're not sure of how to do that? All characters are originally set on stoic, which means the overdrives build as they get damaged.

Imo, though, really you don't need any of that. I almost never bother with protective spells, and I find that the detailed strategies given in walkthroughs are only really helpful if you're having real problems.

Anyway, what I think you should do is simply build up the overdrive modes of each of your aeons. For all the ones you can directly control, it's easy to build up an overdrive in one fight. Just keep using that command that lets them take more damage yet build up their overdrives faster. Since you're near a save point, it doesn't really matter if they end up weak after the fight. The full overdrive gauge will stay until you use it.

Good luck.

re: Please help!! Did I waste 40 hours of my life?

Thanks! I tried it, however my results were bad. If I bring ANY of the aeons into battle fighting those 3 machines (the kickers and the cannons) and use Boost, they are immediately killed. All my aeons were killed and I couldn't get the party any further.

This can be really frustrating, and I haven't even gotten to the boss yet.

The best luck I've had so far with these 3 machinas is this:

Formation is Tidua
Auron
Lulu

cast haste on auron
if lulu survives i do fira on the frontline machina
tidus usually is just reviving people with pheonix down
Auron is using Armor Break to try and kill the 1st monster

I also will use AIM, which I'm not sure helps.

About 25% of the time I can kill the 3 monsters and move on to the next 3. The odds are against me, with those odds, I can not get through the hallway.

any other ideas?

re: Please help!! Did I waste 40 hours of my life?

I think I've got it. 90% of the time I can kill these monsters now by using some of lulu's defensive spells, and yuna's slowga etc. I'm getting close to getting the firega etc spells. I'd still like to get reflect, but it would take me hours and hours to get it (killing the same 3 monsters over and over)

Rreally, what i did to get my overdrives up there, was when fighting the machina, i'd kill all but 1 and then summon my aeon, weaken it and then use boost, dismissing the aeon and either getting out another aeon, or killing the damned thing and repeating the process.

re: Please help!! Did I waste 40 hours of my life?

It really isn't hard to get your characters into overdrive, especially with overdrive modes like Slayer, Warrior, and Ally. As for your Aeons, simply use the Boost option to get into overdrive faster. If it looks like they're gonna die before they get into overdrive, head over to a sphere to heal them. It won't take anywhere near 2 hours. I'd give it 45 minutes, tops. If Lulu has Bio, remember that Seymour is always suseptable to poison effects. The Mortibody is your prime target. Keep hurting it instead of Seymour. It will then continue to siphon off HP from Seymour to heal itself, plus, it can't be killed without Seymour, so, you can continually hurt it like that, and it will keep taking more HP. Once Seymour's HP gets relatively low, summon Bahamut in overdrive, or, if your other Aeons are powerful, summon them in overdrive. You don't really need reflect, just shell will do.

re: Please help!! Did I waste 40 hours of my life?

Seymour Natus is really easy. Here's what to do at low levels:

If you have an SOS Reflect armor for any character which you might have received in the Sanubia Sands, equip it. If not, any SOS Nul(element) armors should do.

Before fighting Seymour get your characters to critical HP, thus activating the SOS Abilities. Here's what I had:

Wakka = NulFrost Armguard & Danger Armguard
Kimahri = Red Armlet & Reflect Armlet
Rikku = NulTide Targe
Yuna = Soft Ring

Why these?

Seymour succumbs easily to Poison and a Poison Fang deals ~2,000 damage plus poison. What to do is to just survive his attacks while Poison kills him slowly (Auto-Reflect quickens the process heaps).

I'm not going to take full credit on this because zzanmato and Blitz_Ace470 thought of this strategy.

Since you're on critical HP, Switch Tidus for Rikku and use a Chocobo Wing (or Feather) and switch armors with Kimahri with the Reflect Armlet. Throw a Poison Fang since Rikku has another turn. Get Rikku out and put NulFrost Wakka in, Mortibody deals <immune> damage to Wakka and hits Kimahri for ~330 damage, thus activating SOS Reflect. Yuna would get into critical HP but don't worry about her just yet. If Seymour kills her, don't revive since she'll die again soon enough. Now, you're set.

Seymour and Seymour Natus' Attack Pattern:

Blizzara - Thundara - Watera - Fira

After Multi-Blizzara, switch Wakka's armor to the Danger Armguard and defend. Natus will lose 1,440 HP per turn due to poison and another ~1,200 because of Reflect (what a loser). After Thundara, get Rikku in for Wakka and steal some Tetra-Elementals. Seymour is really harmless so far. Be careful and watch Seymour's HP closely.

They say that after he loses 12,000 HP, the Break phase begins. This phase isn't that dangerous but you shouldn't take chances. As soon as Seymour has ~23,999 HP or lower, Have Kimahri or Wakka/Rikku use a Phoenix Down on Yuna and take Kimahri out for Auron. Heal all characters. Seymour will use Break and Morti will use Shattering Claw to shatter one character. Luckily, you have Yuna's Soft Ring now don't you? Anyways, never let the 2 (Natus and Morti to get turns next to each other because the results could be deadly. Now, heal and unpetrify whenever necessary. As soon, as he loses another 12,000 HP, Natus will enter the Flare phase. Quickly put Kimahri back in and use a Lunar Curtain on Natus. Morti will be harmless from now on because he will only use Cura on Natus and Shell halves the healing amount (thank God). Next, kill all characters other than SOS Reflect character (Kimahri). Seymour will use Flare on him and will bounce back. Haha! He's rendered helpless throughout this battle. Watch him die slowly from his own stupidity and Poison.

Quite easy huh? In the NsgNsNoNc games, it was a bit intense but in the normal games, he should be a piece of cake.

re: Please help!! Did I waste 40 hours of my life?

The best way to train is find a save point and run around that for awhile and after ever battle, click to COMPLETELY heal ALL characters (HINT: Never use items while your doing this)

I never used Boost with an aeon throughout the game, waste of time. just summon them and IMMEDIATLY use their overdrive, then they will probably die, if they dont, get them out immediatly and Grand Summon them with Yuna and use their Overdrives again. that is all the help i can give you with the aeons

To be honest, you dont HAVE to have the spells the walkthroughs say, that is just to make the battle much easier. I'll say just train for a little bit and customize your items and learn the abilities you can. Face him and remember his patterns/techniques and it shouldnt take you long at all.

We're talking about getting their overdirves so they can use them. Boost allows the aeons overdrive to charge faster, they just take more damage.

Aeons aren't actually advised against Seymour Natus. His Banish kills them instantly.

Just another tip, never have 3 characters with the same POSITIVE STATUS ailments while fighting Natus or else Mortibody would use Desperado and Dispel all of them. Unless they're Auto.

Well actually Twin Fatality I'd have to disagree with you on no Aeons since you can get one turn with them in which you can use their overdrives. This can do quite some damage so get their overdrives up summon them and use it straight away.
