Storyline explanation? |
|
So I finally beat this game but I'm confused about the story.
I understand that wander went into the forbidden lands to get Dormin to bring his girlfriend back from the dead, and that the group of guys came to stop him from ressurrecting Dormin. But I don't understand how wander got turned into a baby. Am I missing something? Also, is this game a sequel to this Ico game I keep hearing about. If so, what is Ico about and is it worth playing? ------------------- Name:Dhargon Title- Monster Mincer HR:6 Play Time: ~300:00+

Well, that is just the way it goes. Wander and Dormin were resurrected together as a baby. The game DOES have a story, but the Developers decided not to tell us to make it more of a "We Decide" situation.
This game is a prequel to Ico. Ico is about a boy with horns who is sent to a castle to be sacrificed, only to have escaped the "coffin" he was meant to stay in. He meets a girl named Yorda, and together they try to find a way from the Castle. That is the whole game. The connection between the two games is that Wander started the line of horned children. Every generation Dormin's spirit is resurrected into a boy. Ico is about 2000 years ahead of Shadow of the Colossus. The reason we know this is because there are a bunch of coffins in the first room of the castle resembling a boy. About every 100 years there is a new boy. Team Ico is also making a 3rd game most likely linked to both SotC and ICO. ------------------- WHY ROLE-PLAYING SUCKS: Nerd: I'm a troll princess with a level 87 KeyBlade in the Kingdom of Uthlambria!!!! Ah, that makes a little more sense. Thanks. So would it be worth it to pick up Ico and run through it then?

If you like SotC you will most definitely like ICO. It's got the same lonely feeling and similar game-play. However, it only has one boss, and tons of the same enemies. They are shadows like the ones in the intro to SotC. We know they are related somehow, but we still don't know how. Also ICO won't tell you much of the story either.

Yeah, it's left to be ambiguous, without a definitive story.
I love it. -------------------

Yep. I just wish Ueda would tell us one day, like when he makes the last ICO related game.
But part of what makes it so badass is that he won't reveal it to us. D= ------------------- WHY ROLE-PLAYING SUCKS: Nerd: I'm a troll princess with a level 87 KeyBlade in the Kingdom of Uthlambria!!!! I attack thee!!!!

i wouldn't say it's badass, that just really sounds like something an overzealous fanboy would say. it was a novel take on a storyline for a truly original game, but it's been out for so long now that i don't see how spilling the beans now would be ruining the majesty for anyone.
sounds more like a cop-out for a storyline that never really existed. or for one that was just plain awful so they went with this. ------------------- Swing that bottle

Well if you can't understand that it's brilliant and what he always intended, that's your problem!
I only bought the game a few months ago, if I'd had it spoiled I would NOT be happy -------------------

re: Storyline explanation? |
quote Pox AmericusFirst of all, one thing that made Ueda's games brilliant are that the stories weren't revealed to the player ON PURPOSE. This was so we would draw our own conclusions on the story. That is why people still remember the game as beautiful. And if you are saying that something from Ueda was awful, have you even played ICO or SotC? I know this sounds hostile, but it's not. =( Ueda let the story be because he wanted the game to be realistic. In real life the WHOLE story does not come out in front of you within a matter of hours. Unlike movies and other games, this one is the more realistic "story teller". I have also read an interview with the interviewer asking Ueda: "Was the story not revealed to the players on purpose, or is it still a mystery to you?" The response was that it was taken on purpose to provide the realism and let the players come up with their own conclusions. He also wished to have made more cutscenes to reveal the story. Sorry I don't have the interview, I'm still trying to find it. Fanboys tend to be biased. I just deliver the facts. ------------------- WHY ROLE-PLAYING SUCKS: Nerd: I'm a troll princess with a level 87 KeyBlade in the Kingdom of Uthlambria!!!! I attack thee!!!!

well if you deal in facts then surely you would like to know the true story behind such a brilliant game?. i think it's just stupid that he won't, which leads me to believe that the real story wasn't anything special and they went with a novel approach that turned out to be very successful. you can't tell me that just because everything else was brilliant in sotc that the true story would also be by default. that's just ridiculously ignorant.

I like the idea. That is my opinion. I'd like it if you didn't call my opinion "stupid".
I mean this is another thing that makes the game so unique. No background knowledge. The game is so simple, it's not like they have any twists or anything, it's really hard to explain. The story behind the game: who is Emon, where does he come from, who is Mono, who is Dormin? It just leaves you wanting more. It excites ME so much that as soon as a little speck of information pops up, I get over excited and start making new theories and whatnot, as do most fans of this game. I am not going to argue about the background story being "bland". True, the most likely conclusion is boy loses girl, boy saves girl. That's it. The background is mostly around that. But we want to know how their village looks like, where it is, what is Dormin to these people, what else does this game have to do with ICO, etc. So much more that they didn't tell us. Though we will probably never find out. One last thing, of course I want to find out. It's just like when people were looking for the LBS (or should I say are). There was no LBS, but if Ueda confirmed this, people wouldn't still be looking. The fun part is the search, the hunt for answers. Though we didn't find the LBS, we found a lot more things (link is in QFTLBS thread). Almost everyone who has played this game wants to know the story. Though I completely disagree with you they cut out the background story because it wasn't anything "special". Ueda made the game like this to give it a better sense of realism, to make the player want more, not because it wasn't "special". It's special because he HASN'T told us. ------------------- WHY ROLE-PLAYING SUCKS: Nerd: I'm a troll princess with a level 87 KeyBlade in the Kingdom of Uthlambria!!!! I attack thee!!!!

i said i think it's stupid he won't reveal the original story. if you want to say that's me calling your idea stupid in some roundabout way then tough shit.
and i also loved the hunt of looking for more info in the game. i spent hours upon hours canvassing the world of sotc, as did thousands of others. and now that that method has been thoroughly exhausted it's time for more answers that everyone wants to know. like you said, who dormin and wanderer and mono is. the legend behind the sword, what wanderer and mono did to become banished from wherever they're from. what this cursed land is. i want to know that stuff. if it's something to be revealed in a future team ico rendition then fine, i can wait for that. if not, then spill the beans already. ------------------- Swing that bottle

My opinion is not to reveal the story, unless he was up to his last ICO related game. For now, he lets people imagine the different possible stories/conclusions. But even then there is a doubt in me.
You want to know, while I don't. That's the simple situation in this argument. And I think we should just stop "arguing" over something silly like this. ------------------- WHY ROLE-PLAYING SUCKS: Nerd: I'm a troll princess with a level 87 KeyBlade in the Kingdom of Uthlambria!!!! I just think it's silly to argue over the internet on opinions, not facts.
Except on cyber daters of course. >_>
