Odd quirks in the game, what's the deal?

So when building your house, adding things to your house cause the item-meter on the right to rise. Except when adding items causes your item-meter to fall.

Or sometimes when I'm deleting items, having fewer items causes the item-meter to go higher instead of smaller. What's the deal with that? It seems to most noticibly affect the items you manufacture. So the weird thing is one mutant plant might count like ten items towards your limit, but three mutant plants count as zero items. What's going on here, how does that work?

In some places there are dead spots. Either you can't place objects there, for no appearant reason, or you can't manipulate objects on certain spots. I had a light show go bad in one of these spots. I removed everything, walls and all, for at least three spaces around the light show, but my Sims and the Repairman would just shrug their shoulders and couldn't fix it. I couldn't move it cuz it was broken and I couldn't fix it cuz it was on one of these dead spots. I wound up walling it up. So what is up with these?

I noticed something odd while in Shiny Things Labs too. Sims would walk WAY out of their way to stay on the cement to get somewhere. Do the Sims automatically try to stay on the same type of flooring when walking somewhere, or does cement have an unusual unlisted property that way?

And another one. Is there a problem with the Gardener? Will she only water so many plants? I know she won't water the mutant plants, but every time I move into a new house, a week later half the plants are dead. What's happening there?
