Laptop is Screwed Up

First off, I'm running Windows XP on an Acer Aspire 5315-2153

Onto the problem, I downloaded AVG 8 a bit ago, ran it, and cleared out all my viruses and such. It then asks to reboot my PC, so I do it. And once it's booted back up, my hard drive(CPU, whatever you call it.) is deleted. If thats not what its called, I pretty much can't get on anything like "Add/Remove Programs". When I try, it gives me the error- " C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.ex " Application not found.

I had a back-up file on CD, I've misplaced it. Some help would be terrific.

I have spotted your problem:

Lol, I found this. It's a boot disk for XP. You should be able to access System Restore from it.

re: Laptop is Screwed Up

you know, its not really windows thats the major problem (well maybe...you judge from this next statement). i believe that its the uses fault for not knowing what to do to prevent or fix a problem. maybe thats why people hate windows. inexperienced and assuming that the OS should fix itself. and its probably why people prefer macs...because of that simpler, more user friendly interface. but look, thats just my opinion, and im windows all the way

re: Laptop is Screwed Up

Well if system files were deleted by AVG because they were infected you will need a windows cd to fix it (or to reinstall totally).

re: Laptop is Screwed Up

I said I didn't know what to call it.

Either way, yeah, I'll probably end up rebooting the entire system, unless anyone else has something try for me to try.

That only allows you to boot the CD via a Floppy Drive (Older PCs don't allow booting from CD), you still need the XP CD itself to use them.

I'm unsure of how well Windows is working, but if you can get into the system and use it a bit, try going to Start> Run, and type cmd /k sfc /scannow

This will scan for damaged/missing system files, and restore them (You may need to insert the XP CD at some point if it asks).

re: Laptop is Screwed Up

When I do that, it goes to a screen with lists of different programs that says "Open With".

I was thinking about just letting my laptop battery die and rebooting. Would that severely hurt it?

re: Laptop is Screwed Up

Far from it. Firstly, Windows has WAY too many safety "features". Sometimes you can't even delete folders... Mac is just for pure idiots. Secondly, Windows is very resource hoggy and unstable. Get Linux.
