Firefox 3.01

Well, I just updated to Firefox 3.01, but then, I lost all the extensions I used to have. Anybody know why?

re: Firefox 3.01

probably because it might have been incompatible - though that shouldnt remove them though. maybe the previous version was uninstalled and therefore all the extensions were deleted. are you upgrading from the version 2, or upgrading 3 to 3.01? it is possible that the cause could be due to the fact that different major versions are in different folders - or at least, that was the case when i had FF 3 beta. just look for your extensions again, it shouldnt be all that hard to find them again.

re: Firefox 3.01

I had Firefox 3 and was upgrading to 3.01.

But yeah, I just installed the same extensions again.

Still, I wonder why it did that?

dunno. maybe a bug? oh well, either way, no harm done, and you got all your extensions back, so i guess there is no more to say on that topic. just make sure that the extensions are still there after a restart.

re: Firefox 3.01

Because extensions have a file in them that shows the latest version that it was tested on. For most, that was 3.00, but some put down a greater number realising there would be no large changes for a couple versions.

Those people were probably right, if you need to get them back rather than waiting the half a day or however long it is, go into your Documents/Settings->Profile->Application Data->Mozilla->Firefox->Profiles->(random numbers and letters, pick whichever has your addons) and there should be a bunch more folders with random numbers and letters. These are your addons, you can probably tell which is which based on the names of the files inside. If you open each addon's "install.rdf" with notepad and change the max version value to something higher, it won't stop working due to incompatibility. However, it will break if there's a huge change, but then you can just turn off the addon off and wait for a real update. The value will also reset, every update.

re: Firefox 3.01

I see, but regarding getting the add-ons back. I'm having a little trouble doing the process you showed me.

I can't seem to find the folder that has all the add-ons...just so I know where to look, if my add-on's disappear again.

re: Firefox 3.01

On XP, it should be under C:\Documents and Settings\[Profile]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox

Application Data is a hidden folder, you'll need to navigate there through the address bar or make them visible under View->Folder Options.

Running Vista, I think it's "Users" rather than "Documents and Settings".

re: Firefox 3.01

nath, there is a tweak in firefox (id need to look it up in my firefox thread, but ive lost the link to it) which disables that compatibility disabling so you can run any extension. however, the drawback is that if an extension is truly incompatible with the current FF version, it may cause unexpected results. for example, i tried that tweak with an add on skin which wasnt designed for FF 2 (designed for 1.5)...it ended up with buttons all over the toolbars. doing a google search for firefox tweaks should do the trick if you do decide to try the tweak.
