re: Windows 7

I've been using it for a few months with the RC but I purchased the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade yesterday. Also, you can format your computer using the upgrade version, so it makes it cheaper than the full retail version.

Also I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials which rates very highly, higher than AVG and most other anti virus software. It works great on Win 7, as well as IE8 is lightning fast on it.

re: Windows 7

I don't get why people still bash on Vista, but it's a telling reason as to why Windows 7 is out so soon. The early negative publicity which it received not only in tech circles but also in the mainstream really shot it in the foot. It never really recovered after that.

If I get a new computer, I'll definitely put 7 on it, but for the computers I currently have, Vista/XP is more than adequate.

re: Windows 7

MS generally have a habit of bringing out OS's 3 years a part. Win 95, Win 98, Win 2000, ME, XP, with the exception of XP to Vista because of so many delays etc. So the cycle is getting back on track, if anything.. but I bet they're more than happy to have Win 7 released.

re: Windows 7

I've used XP, Vista and Windows 7. I prefer XP to Vista and Win7. Just seems to work better, that and I'm so used to it.

re: Windows 7

I'm just going to copy paste my post from the OS forum.

quote
Honestly I've used all the features quite thoroughly and I've grown to hate them all, except Aero Shake. I hate how the OS forces you to have libraries as well, and the taskbar is just horrendous despite what people say. It's chunky, slow moving, and vague. It's like a Mac dock without the thumbnails, ie like pissing in the wind. I went into Windows 7 with average expectations, everyone else said it was an amazing step forward (ie, more snappy and responsive) but really it's just a pain to use. You can turn the new taskbar off but to be honest I'm still not completely satisfied as it is now very ugly. Vista was such a relief as the default theme actually looked nice for a change. All in all though it's not that much different from Vista, I personally would have just preferred more and simply as a visuals obsessed man I'll probably be switching back to Vista.

On a more positive note the startup was a lot nicer (better start up time, nicer looking boot logo, nicer splash screen, shadows under logon text) and maximizing windows to fill up one half of the screen has helped quite a bit. The new folder tree view in Explorer is nice as well.

Actually on final thoughts my only real disliking is the taskbar. Although when you when you move the mouse downwards while clicking on the window border of a fullscreen application it windows it, which is pretty handy most of the time but I've found it a bit annoying whilst working in Flash and Photoshop.

Installing it at this moment.

Got it for free because I got my new laptop before it was going to get released.
