Forced update of Live

Since the forced update by Microshit I can't always sign into MSN Live and it's driving me insane using Windows Messenger. I tried using this but I can't get it to work for some reason. Step 6 is weird and I don't get it. Can anyone help me out? Being on XP 64 bit is annoying the hell out of me right now but I don't wanna switch just yet.

re: Forced update of Live

Alright, all steps in more detail then:
  1. Download the MSI file here
  2. Download the Segoe UI Font here
  3. Download Windows Live Communcations Platform here
  4. Download Microsoft Visual Studio Runtime here
  5. Download Microsoft Application Error Reporting 64-bit
  6. Open the downloaded file called VistaXP_VS_v2_0.zip. In there you will see a folder called VistaXP, open it. Now open the folder called Fonts
In there you will see two files: seguibd and seguibk. Unpack them both and copy them to %systemroot%\Fonts (you can copy and paste the bolded part into your Windows Address bar)
  7. Double-click on all the downloaded MSI files (step 3, 4, 5) to install them
  8. Now double-click on the Messenger 2009 MSI file to install it.
Hopefully it works for you.

re: Forced update of Live

Well, for a while now...anything dealing with a MS update...has not worked. Now that the update is mandatory, I cannot use Messenger...at all. Before, I would just avoid the update.

I have downloaded the various software packs/installers and all give an installation error. The latest one providing a link to this page. I also get problems when trying to update/install the Zune software

Any tips?

re: Forced update of Live

Wow. I just updated it and I have to again :/ The WLI is NOT working properly for some reason. It reaches the Microsoft Application Error Reporting portion (installing that?) and then gives an error message...EVERY TIME.

re: Forced update of Live

Is anything of the Live products installed on your machine at all?
If so, try removing every single one of their products with Revo Uninstaller.

It cleans out programs more thoroughly then a normal uninstaller. (also checks leftover temporary files, installation directories, registry values and so on)

re: Forced update of Live

Just used that, removed WLI and Mail but Messenger was on the list, so I looked around and came across a standalone installer and used that (turns out it was your first response : )). Thanks, all is running fine for now.
