Windows Media Player and .srt files |
|
Okay, i have a wmp video file but the language is not in english and there are no subtitles, but there is a file which is a .srt file and this file has all the movie's subs. Now i'm thinking is there a way to view those subs while watching the wmp video file. I will be using win media player to watch the video file but if there is any other software that will allow me to view the subs and watch the movie at the same time, i'd really appreciate that. The thing is that it is a .srt file so something can be done with it right?
thanks for help. | |

VLC Player or an old version (oldversion.com) of BS Player are good choices. Don't get BS Player from the official site because it contains ads. VLC Player should find your subs if you rename them to [name of movie].srt where [name of movie] is the exact filename of your movie, sans the .wmv part. If not, go to File -> Open (not Quick/ Fast Open)

Before you do that, if you want to watch the movie in WMP you can also do that.
Either with DirectVobSub or with ffdshow I've used both, and ffdshow seems to be faster with starting up, and takes up less resources, but either work fine with any WMP edition. Once installed, make sure your .srt file has the exact same name as your media file. E.g. you want to play FindIng-NemO.mpg make sure the srt will be this: FindIng-NemO.srt (f2, ctrl+c on the movie then ctrl+v on the srt) If done correctly, on DirectVobSub you'll get to see a green arrow in the right lower right part of your screen, and with ffdshow you'll get to see either an audio and/or video codec icon in the lower right part of your screen. ------------------- quote Jesus ![]()

thanks but, i can't understand a couple of things. I downloaded DirectVobSub 2.37. I clicked your link and clicked 'Download'. After that I clicked the link "Download [DirectVobSub 2.37 with installer(for Windows XP/2k/2k3)]".
I recieved a 'vsfilter.2.37_nt' setup file. When installation was complete, there were only 2 files in the 'DirectVobSub' directory, one the uninstall file and the second, VSFilter.dll. Am I supposed the recieved this file? Also, can you explain me how I can set the whole thing up meaning how i can view those subs (which are in a seperate .srt format) in windows media player? I have changed the named the .srt file the same as the movie's video file name, like you had stated above. Will really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Right, I will make it clearer for you, and with the use of ffdshow now.
So first, just uninstall DirectVobSub, and download ffdshow, as provided in my other post and install it. After installing ffdshow, go to the folder where you've located your movie, and be sure to also have put the .srt file in there. Like so: ![]() Now, start your movie, and you should see these two (or only one) icons appear in the lower right part of your screen: ![]() Now check if your subtitle runs smoothly along with the spoken texts in the movie. If not, try other version, but if there aren't any, there's a way to fix that too, just let us know if this has worked to show the subtitles in WMP. ------------------- quote Jesus ![]()

Sorry, still did not understand some things.
I have un-installed DirectVobSub and have downloaded ffdshow from the link above. But some things in the installation of the ffdshow. Should I just leave everything by default, and I mean each and every option in the installation, should they default or do I have to make some changes? Also, by default, the installation directory was to C:\WINDOWS\System32. Is this where I must install ffdshow? Because I have set the directory to be C:\Program Files\ffdshow. Still in need of some info after which i will try your thing. Thanks for the help.

Ok, for ffdshow, you can set it to C:\Program Files\Ffdshow if you want. It doesn't change how the program works or anything.
For the installation itself, just leave everything at it's default and you'll be fine. ------------------- quote Jesus ![]()

The first result on Google for "VLC Player" is http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ - the official site. You'll want to download it from there. The Windows version should work on all types of Windows - 98, 2000, XP, etc.
.Dmg files are installers for Mac OSX. There are two types - one for the "old" Macs and one for the newer, Intel-based. If you decide to use VLC Player, then you might want to go to the options window and choose your own font, because I believe that VLC uses an ugly one by default. Go to Video -> Subtitles/OSD -> Text renderer. Hit the Browse button and search for a font file. (Most of your fonts are located in c:\windows\fonts) You can also change the color and size here.

Freeze, there's one problem. The images you have hosted don't seem to be appearing. All I see is that small white box with the red 'x' in it. Tried R-clicking and Show picture several times but still doesn't show.
However, I've understood what you're trying to say. But still, there is another problem. I have both the wmp file and the .srt file in the same directory, in the same folder. Only these two files in that folder. Name of both are same also. The name of the wmp file is the same as the .srt file with the exception of the ".srt" not being over-written. There is no gap between the last character and the ".srt". The last character is a bracket ")". When I open the Windows Media Player, I think the icons you are talking about are on my lower right-side tool-bar which are a "FF", one with small black righting under it and one with turquoise coloured righting under it, in front of the black one. I take these are 2 icons you are talking about? If so, there is still a problem. When I open the Video file and these 2 icons appear South-East of my screen, there are no subs. Any idea what is wrong? Thanks for all the help. Rikkus, I'm currently downloading your suggestion. Will post back for results. Thanks again.

quote AmplifiedYes, those are exactly the ones I'm talking about. Weird that my pics don't show up, but by the sound of it, everything has been done correctly. I'm thinking what could possibly be wrong right now, but I'm pretty blank on suggestions now... Are you absolutely possitivily sure you have the same names? Caps, weird numbers/markt, anything...? Try to remove the .srt part, and see if that changes anything. It could also be that you have downloaded a bad subtitle file though. Try to open it with notepad (right click, open with... then select notepad) Is there any text in there? If not, then the subs won't appear, because the srt file is just blank. Try downloading another subtitle file and see if that works. ------------------- quote Jesus ![]()

Freeze, first of all, I'd really like to thank you for all the support you gave. I really appreciate it.
Second, Rikkus's thing worked. I can see the subtitles now. Thanks for the help Rikkus. I don't know why the subtitles didn't show up. I tried the thing you suggested above, made sure everything is correctly labelled and checked wether there was or was not any text in the .srt file. Wierd. The .srt file is okay cause it works with VLC Player so I don't think any thing is wrong with the .srt file. Still, thanks both of you for the help.
