After last weeks surprise win against Wakefield, I thought Widnes might kick on and win a few more. But last night against an average Castleford side, who had won just 2 this season prior to last night, battered Widnes 46-2. It was a gutless performance and I just hope when a new coach comes in, he will be able to turn things round.
If the new Widnes coach is Daniel Anderson, you heard it here first. -------------------

There is a shortlist of 4 for the Widnes job...
Daniel Anderson Gary Freeman Steve Carter Stuart Spruce I doubt it will be Spruce following last nights horror show, and I hope it isnt Carter. Anderson is the favourite, and he will lead NZ into the Tri Series, then take over at Widnes after that, with Spruce leading the side until then. -------------------

News in from the NRL judiciary:
Danny Williams of the Melbourne Storm has just received a lengthy suspension of 18 weeks after striking Wests Tigers' forward O'neill. The suspension means he wont be able to play in the super league next year (unless he joins midway during the season). quote im the hurricaneThats correct, he has said he doesnt want the job now. This has angered the Widnes board, who paid for him to fly over here for an interview. I had never heard of him before today, and I was under the impression that he wasnt one of the contenders, and that the 4 I mentioned above were the ones in the frame. Im back on the forums now after a 3 day break -------------------

I am still of the opinion of that when you are concussed, it is up to your teammates or even the trainer(s) to detect that so they can replace him. Now this was not the case in the match against the Tigers. Williams played on (concussed) and smashed O'neill. Even though Williams was concussed and probably didnt know what he was doing, it doesnt alter the fact that he did something terribly wrong. He took the law into his own hands and dished out a penalty. He is responsible for his actions and I reckon the ban is fair.
Btw, you said he didnt know what he was doing when he hit O'neill. He must have known who he was hitting, because he remembered that O'neill had smashed him in a tackle in the same match. This goes to show that Williams knew who had hurt him before and now wanted to get revenge. So my conclusion is that he knew what he was doing, cause he remembered who had hurt him before and now wanted revenge. He got his revenge but paid the price with an 18 match ban.

Williams was hoping to move to Superleague for next season, but it looks like that move is in jeopardy as the 18 match ban seems to cover every competition. He would probably miss the first 10-12 matches in SL next season.

yeh, but on the topic of SUPERLEAUGE, i really dont think that the standard of teh game over there in England is nearly as good as in Australia.
Alot of guys who arent that great go over there n get a SHITLOAD of cash and play key positions which they wood neva have played in the NRL. this was also clear last year (i think it was) when the AUssies swept the English in the Test SEries, with relative ease. International RL just doesnt draw enough interest, and unless them Poms start beating the Kangas it will remain to be very 1 sided. Mj ------------------- NIRVANA ROKZ

re: General Discussion |
quote mj_da_bestI agree with you on most cases there, but saying that Australia easily beat England in the test series last year, is a bit far fetched. The scores from the tests last year were: 1st Test - 8 November: won 22-18 / JJB Stadium, Wigan 2nd Test - 15 November: won 23-20 / KC Stadium, Hull 3rd Test - 22 November: won 18-12 / McAlpine Stadium, Huddersfield Australia were lucky to get away with these wins.If I remember correctly, in the second test match they were down 20-8 at half time and won 23-20. In the final one they scored 2 quick tries to win 18-12 and clinch the series 3-0. Australia didnt win the series with ease, they were more so lucky. They didnt have all their firepowers with them on the tour, but they still won and it shows that both England and Australia are two great rugby league nations. Rugby League at an international level is very poor. Only three countries really participate on a regular basis, being Australia, GB and New Zealand. We need to get other countries involved. Btw, I heard that the kangaroo tour of 2003 is likely to be the last one in the foreseeable future, according to http://www.rl1908.com This message was edited by justin666 on Aug 07 2004.

re: General Discussion |
quote Justin666That is probably because of the Tri Series, as that will now be the main focus of International Rugby League for the next few years. In response to MJ's point, Australia didnt breeze past GB in last years Test Series, they were all very close games and could have been won by either side. It could have easily been a GB Whitewash of Australia not vice versa. Also, concerning your comment about Superleague, the Aussies that come over here are ruining our game. Well most of them. We have a handful of top quality Aussies and Kiwis who could do a good job in NRL eg. Ali Lauititi. But when the Aussies come over here for money, they are harming the growth of home grown players. Recently the quota has been chopped, which means more British players are now breaking through eg. Danny McGuire. I think soon GB will have the young talent to compete with Australia and New Zealand. -------------------
