There's no denying that the GameCube has a large population of kid gamers. Nintendo themselves have admitted that theirs is more a segment of kid-friendly games than mature ones. In an attempt to capture some of the ground traditionally occupied by Nintendo and GameCube, Microsoft is planning around 10 child-friendly games for the Xbox for the Holiday season.
It looks like Microsoft is almost on the other end of the spectrum than Nintendo when it comes to mature games. In contrast to trying to appeal to the older demographic, Xbox is struggling to find ground with children. He said that in the past many had been reluctant to make games for children just for the Xbox as they were not convinced they would sell. "It has taken a while to convince them that we have more than a hardcore audience, that we are going to be a broad appeal machine," said Fries.
Rare, the former Nintendo second party, is one of the companies that will take on appealing to younger players. Ken Lobb of Rare says the challenge was coming up with games that did not patronise children and also offered something for adults. "You don't dumb games down just because you think they are for children." Very true...

>_< I don't know if it'll fail or succeed, but many kids already got a GCN/PS2, and their parents will mostly unlikely buy them another console that has a mature reputation. I wonder if Microsoft will have the E games on-line.

It's going to be hilarious seeing what X-Box zealots say now, seeing as their main argument to why the GCN is the 'Gaycube' is that it's aimed at kids.

Games that are exclusively aimed at kids always suck. Fact.

There's not much use for a thread about news if you can't comment on it, but news is one of the only things that can't be blamed for being biased or flaming, so let me have this one bastion of peace!

I saw that coming. I first figured it out when I saw they were coming out with a Fairly Odd Parents game coming out for the Xbox, which was about a mounth ago.

Also Xbox now has a Wireless controler. But it won't be as sucessful as Nintindo's Wavebird, because probably most Xbox gamers already have 4 controlers.

I was wondering why online gamestores such as bestbuy.com etc. give preorders for games which are coming out in 2 months. I went there and they didn't have details on Rogue Squadron 3 and Mario kart: DD. I have to go to ign all the way for this. Sorry if this wasn't news but this is: Nintendo

The U.S. is the top market for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo this generation. For Xbox and PS2 the European market and then Japan has given them the most success after the U.S. But GameCube has performed better in Japan than Europe unlike the others. The Xbox and GameCube are both heading toward 10 million global installed userbase very closely together. Unfortunately even these important landmark numbers combined is just 1/3 of what the PS2 has worldwide.
GameCube and Xbox have about 500 thousand each before they hit 10 million units. GCN is ahead by about 150,000 units worldwide, but that means it has been slipping against the Xbox which has had little control of Japan, the third most performing market. In the U.S. GameCube has about 5 million, Europe 2.5 million, and Europe under 2 million. Xbox has a million more than GCN in the U.S., 250 thousand more in Europe, and only 1 million total in Japan.
The Holiday season is probably what will decide which console "wins the race" to achieve 10 million userbase and will further set the stage for what two consoles carry out this generation. In related information, Shigeru Miyamoto says that he believes the market size is shrinking (in Japan it certainly looks that way). So he will continue to have Nintendo do new things -- innovation -- because that would be the way to keep the market growing whereas games that are all the same restrict it.
"We need to do something bold and brand-new, or the total market may shrink. And if we are just fighting against our competitors to be at the top of a shrinking marketplace, it doesn't make that much difference in the public eye. So thinking about the big picture, we want to make changes so that people realize what we are making is truly innovative and fascinating."

Wow, I never knew that the XBOX was actually doing well...The Nintendo must "win"!

Yeah Gamecube has to. Like Princess Peach said that nintendo has got Mario Kart coming in November, then they Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3 coming next month which will be a really good game judging by the gameplay and graphics and they have got Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles(probably the most anticipated game since this will be Square's first game on the nintendo console since the SNES)coming in February. So nintendo has got good games that will definitely last till next summer.

Plus they have Viewtiful joe comin' out!

The GCN will be $100 soon, making it the same price as the GBA SP... That's crazy! O_O

Yeah that is a little unlike nintendo but this is probably until their inventory is finished because they have a lot of GCNs left to sell. But they will lower the price of the SP in a little while like they did with the GBA.
