Nintendo's first loss, Next console unveiling, FF:CC Preorder Bonus
|
If my information is correct then the GCN version of Celebrity Deathmatch is in fact cancelled. It was only released for XBox and PS2. I might be wrong though, but I'm pretty sure I heard that somewhere...
quoteNintendo posts a loss, Plans to announce next console at E3
11.13.03
Nintendo will show off the successor to the GameCube at E3.
Today Nintendo announced it's fiscal sales report for the first half of the year, which was not good posting a 2.9 billion yen (US$26.8 million) loss. This is mostly because of sagging GameCube sales before the price drop to $99.99 that has put the GameCube into a worldwide #2 spot in sales the effect of which will not be seen till the end of the fiscal year since the price drop was announced in late September to late for this last fiscal sales report.
Nintendo also had some good news when it announced that they would unveil their next home console at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (also known as E3) in May of next year. Nintendo's executive director Jinyou Mori said that the company hopes to release the next-generation console during the next fiscal year in Japan, and also stated that a simultaneous worldwide release would be ideal.

11.13.03
Nintendo has announced a Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles preorder deal for the US (no, not a bonus disk)!
Nintendo today announced that all preorders for Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronciles will include a free GCN/GBA link cable. If you don't already know, the multiplayer aspect of the game will require all players to link their GBA's to their Gamecube's. FF: CC is due out on February 9th 2004 in the US (same day as Metroid: Zero Mission). No such deal has yet been announced for Europe.

Nice info but it's sad that Nintendo had a loss.I can't believe that they're going to show their next console in the next E3.I think it's a bit early because the GCN has just kicked off with because Final Fantasy:Crystal Chronicles and Star Fox 2 will be coming next year. But they're just going to show the new console not release it, so I guess this is a good time to unveil it.What about Sony and Microsoft? When are they going to show their next consoles?I guess I better pre-order FF:CC.

Yay, I actually got some information out.Actually it's not about the GCN but about a great game on it.
quote ign
May 15, 2003 - What's more fun than gun toting robot carnage? Customizable gun toting robot carnage. Custom Robo follows the fast paced mech fighting style of games such as Virtual On but delivers it in a simplified package. Players are given the option of building a robot combatant from the ground up and tailor its tools of destruction. With a strong emphasis on multiplayer battles, players can craft their very own personalized mech and pit it against their friends.
We were only shown the multiplayer mode of the game on the show floor, which gave us a general assortment of weapons and items to choose from. Multiplayer options offers a four player free for all, a two-on-two versus, and tag team mode. From the get go the interface was a little confusing but eventually self-explanatory with a little reading. Players can choose weapons that can be fitted to the robots arms and shoulders. While other items can be equipped to change the robots handling performance. The robots and weapons are very cheerfully colored. It is difficult to take a missile launcher seriously when it resembles a neon super soaker. The battles are very simplified and do not require much strategy. Fighting in the verses mode generally consists of chasing down, retreating from, and bombarding the enemy with an endless supply of ammo. The meat of the game lies in the amount of weapons and parts that are available for the robot. Gamers whom desire to create a death machine that reflects their own unique personality will be happy with the amount of available items to choose from. There are over 200 different weapons and parts in the game.
Visuals are colorful and simple. The version of the game we played didn't push any graphical limits of the Cube hardware. Effects are more impressive than level designs and robot models. Environments are basic confined arenas with a few objects to take cover behind and jump over. Controlling the robot is very easy but choosing the correct weapon to fire teeters on button mashing.
The robots basic movements are run, shoot, jump, dash, and shoot some more. Jumping is centered to the A button and dashing is performed by taping A while jumping. Controls are simple but there were numerous times when we were caught up on the annoying arena obstacles. It was unclear as to the level of environment interaction, as the ability to pick up objects wasn't apparent.
Our impression of the multiplayer mode is that the fighting is too shallow, but the numerous customizable options improve play value. Gamers who want to immediately dive into the action may lose interest quickly. Custom Robo is designed for those who value customization options over actual gameplay.
Keep this in mind that the information is from E3, so it's not recent. For those of you who don't know(I don't know about the game myself but I know a few things about it from the trophies in SSBM ), Custom Robo 2 is a sequel to Custom Robo, a game which was only released in Japan. In the game you can customize your robots and make them battle. There are some really cool screenshots of the game here(this link will take you straight to the page with the screenshots). The graphics are awesome and I hope the gameplay is as well. The reason I put this information here is because there is no other place that I could think of and this is the sequel of a game which was only released in Japan but it should be available everywhere now.Sorry if I posted it in the wrong place since the info is about a game not the GCN.

Gamecube October Sales
|
quoteNews Article: Nintendo Sales Figures for October News Date: 11/18/2003 Source: Nintendo
Nintendo's numbers continue to rise, and they've issued a release looking at the phenomenon from nearly every angle.
DID YOU KNOW?
Nintendo GameCube Sales Update
The official numbers are in, and they confirm that Nintendo GameCube™ is upending the console video game market. The Sept. 25 price drop of Nintendo GameCube to an MSRP of $99.99 continues to have a massive ripple effect throughout the video game industry, according to October's Toy Retail Sales Tracking Service (TRSTS):
* The final October hardware market share among consoles was 35 percent for Nintendo GameCube. It grabbed 10 market share points in October, including nine from PlayStation 2 and one from Xbox.
* Nintendo sold more than a quarter of a million Nintendo GameCube systems in October, 50 percent higher than any other month in 2003, including September. This one-month number also is considerably more than any month of Microsoft Xbox sales so far this year.
* The projected units sold for October are 300,000 for PlayStation 2, 254,000 for Nintendo GameCube and 176,000 for Microsoft Xbox. And momentum is growing: Reports from Nintendo's largest retail clients show that unit sales are actually up so far in November.
* When coupled with sales of the Game Boy® Advance line, Nintendo was responsible for more than half of all hardware system sales (51 percent) in the month of October.
* Nintendo GameCube software sales are also soaring – games sold were up 62 percent in October from the previous month…and so far in 2003, are exactly double what they were at the same point in 2002.
Nothing compares with the Game Boy Advance.
* In October, Nintendo sold more than 400,000 Game Boy Advance systems – more than 100,000 more units than any of the consoles. Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance are the only two systems to show unit sales growth so far in 2003.

Sony knocked to 3rd in Canada, Top 15 Publishers Announced
|
quoteSony de-throned
11.21.03
Well..... sort of.
Nintendo today announced that in Canada their sales of GBA's and Gamecube's were the number 1 and 2 best selling systems for the month of October, accounting for more than 60% of all hardware sales.
"This has been a great year for Nintendo of Canada", says Ron Bertram, general manager, Nintendo of Canada. "We are very thankful to our Canadian consumers and retailers for their support this year. We have great momentum right now and we intend to keep it going well beyond the holiday season".
The big spike in sales is likely due to the price drop put into place by Nintendo in late September. More as it breaks.

This year's Top 15 Game Publishers as of Q1-Q3!
Check it out, as our faithful Nintendo remains high on the list.
Buried in the recent U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray report on the game industry is NPD's rankings of the top software publishers by sales and market share. While the numbers are only through September--and don't include the always-crucial Q4--they do indicate which way the winds in the game publishing industry are blowing.
Electronic Arts still ranks No.1 as they have 4 Platforms to storm and gain noticable sales, no doubt that their sports genre is the secret behind it especially the Madden Franchise. Nintendo remains high on the list at No.2 gaining some shares, exciting for Nintendo. The GameBoy Advance and The GameBoy Advance SP is of course Nintendo's Secret here. Sony and Sega get decreases in terms of sales. Activision gets a major blow to their sales, as they drop 3%! Microsoft's Sales also sees decreases. Not the best year for the industry this year, with Nintendo and EA trying their best to help. Also something that should be noticed is UbiSoft's rise in sales!! 2.6%!

Hopefully that doesn't happen.I'd like to see a Street Fighter game for the GCN.Anyway, here's some thing I found in my paper.I think somebody might have posted this before.

IBM Corp has built a supercomputer the size of a television based on microchip technology to be used in gaming consoles due out next year. IBM said the supercomputer, which can perform two trillion calculations per second, is a small-scale prototype of the Blue Gene/L supercomputer that it is building for thw Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. IBM vice president of tecnology and strategy, Irving Wladawsky-Berger, said that the supercomputer used 1000 microprocessors that are based on PowerPC microchip technology. The PowerPC chip is currently used in Apple Computers Inc. computers. It is also the technology that will be the foundation of the next generation of gaming consoles form Nintendo and Sony Corp, which IBM is working on, he said. Phew, it took me a long time to type all of that.Well the chip's rank is 73 out of the top 500 supercomputer list. So, it should be pretty fast.

Haha. Thanks for actually kind of agreeing with me.Yeah, the next console can be pretty small but the bad thing is that Sony will also be using the chip.Oh well, it could have been worse like Microsoft also using the chip.I did see the picture of the platinum wavebird somewhere a few days back.It looks nice but I already have a Wavebird but I only use it when I have to play multiplayer games. It takes up quite a lot of batteries if you play with it everyday.

Vanilla? Sounds good. But it looks like Nintendo is using words that describe a color in a complex way again. Oh well... Vinalla is way better than a plain and simple word like white.
I wish it was coming to the US too. Then I could look at a picture of it on the boxes...

More news! ^-^ From N-philes. Congratulations Miyamoto! You deserved it.
quoteNews: Miyamoto Inducted into Golden Joystick Hall of Fame
Despite the numerous awards given out at this years Golden Joystick Awards, none were quite as exalted as becoming the event's first ever Hall of Fame inductee. And because of that, Nintendo had more reasons to celebrate than others, as none other than Shigeru Miyamoto himself, the brain child of franchises such as Mario and the Legend of Zelda, was given this highly esteemed honor. Indeed, this was the first year the Golden Joystick Awards bestowed such recognition, making Miyamoto's decoration even more coveted. Unfortunately Shigeru Miyamoto was unable to attend the awards ceremony, which was held in London, however he did provide a videotaped acceptance speech. "I'm honored to become the first recipient of the Golden Joystick Hall of Fame award," said Miyamoto, "I would like to thank all of the game fans and game media in Europe who are helping to energize the video game industry. For more than 20 years I have been fortunate enough to work with very talented people with amazing foresight from the early Donkey Kong days to our most recent, Mario Kart: Double Dash!! I really have enjoyed every minute. It's an amazing industry to work in." Along with Miyamoto's induction, Nintendo won several other awards to add to their already lengthy list. The biggest acknowledgement of Nintendo's abilities came from being named Publisher of the Year. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker beat out the competition to receive the GameCube Game of the Year, while Mario Kart: Double Dash! was also recognized as the most wanted game for Christmas 2003. The GBA SP outperformed in an arguably tougher contest by being named Hardware of the Year. As well, Nintendo received a truck load of runner-up recognitions. The following is a list of the awards and their winners.

N5 Unveiled this month? o.O
|
Nintendo got best publisher as well! w00t!
quote28 November 2003 By Lisa Byron 2004 could well be a bumper year for the global interactive entertainment industry, with senior sources suggesting that up to four new formats could be introduced within the next 12 months. Rumours about the arrival of the Gen3 console platforms have been rife for some time, with many predicting a 2005/2006 roll-out for new systems from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
But this week two major publisher bosses and a development head all hinted to MCV that new consoles from both Microsoft and Nintendo will be launched next year, with a new Game Boy also set to emerge early in the New Year to counter the arrival of Sony’s PSP in the fourth quarter.
Nintendo A major internal conference of Nintendo bigwigs from across the globe is believed to be taking place in early December, to give territory bosses a heads-up on forthcoming announcements. And a full rundown of the games giant’s next home console is expected to be top of the agenda.
Meanwhile, Nintendo’s senior MD Yoshihiro Mori earlier this month confirmed to a news conference that the firm will be unveiling a new machine at E3 in May next year, with the hope of a roll-out in Japan at least by the end of the year.
Reports are claiming that the E3 announcement will not be a successor to GameCube or Game Boy Advance. However, MCV understands that both a home console and a new handheld are in the pipeline, with the handheld set to launch early in the year – ahead of Sony’s PSP – and the static console following in Q4.
Read the full article hereWowwee, as excited as I am about the thing, December just feels way too early, so much time for the competition to improve on the product... And they can't damn well release the N5 yet, I'm still waiting for Resident Evil 4
