re: 754mlr and installing xp

I upgraded to XP without any problem. However I later tried a completely new install and it didn't work. I didn't have time to look into it so I just left it. When I did the new install I booted from the cd, chose a new install, formatted & partioned the hdd, etc. After windows writes the bare minimum files to the drive and tries to reboot and continue with the installation it just kept crashing and wouldn't work. I tried it 3 or 4 times and the same thing. I had been planning to get back to it in the next week so if you find out your problem I'd like to know what it was. (I had the full version of XP so that wasn't the problem)

I planned to wipe the hdd again, install 98 and then upgrade to XP if nothing else worked.

re: 754mlr and installing xp

I have installed WinXP Pro no worries... that was until I tried to shutdown. My machine won't actually power-off anymore. I installed XP from a freshly re-formatted HDD and used the standard install. I am stumped. The XP compatibility test reported no errors or warnings, yet it won't utilise ATX ability to turn the power off. Anyone have any ideas??

re: 754mlr and installing xp

I've since got XP working on my computer. I had the shutdown problem as well but it was an easy fix. Just go to the device manager, go to View and check show all devices. Now go to NT Apm/Legacy support and activate it. Now the problem should be solved.

re: 754mlr and installing xp

in case anyone else still is looking for a solution to install xp. i found out that the native generic IDE driver used during the text portion of the installation of xp is not fully compatible. i would get errors during different parts of the installation (ie, copying of files, access error). the trick is to use F6 to load the ALI ide driver which can be found at http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=5231 or you can create your own by downloading the latest ALI unified driver and using the txtsetup.oem from the cd that came with the 754mlr motherboard.

oh, you might want to upgrade to the latest bios (6/12/2002) as one of the steps to getting xp to work with this board. if you get streaks and lock ups post xp install, your best bet is to use a pci video card and disable the onboard graphics card. if you need help disabling the onboard graphics, look at my reply to this thread http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/index.php?fn=view_thread&t=57654.

good luck.

Just tell me if u have in ur bios config agp or pci choice?

Maybe i cant config the bios...

When i choose agp in bios, just show some vertical lines in my monitor when the pc starts.

What xp u have instaled (pro, pro sp2 or home edition)?

What bios and where u get that bios that works??

Mine mobo says v1.5b and i have a celeron 700....

Just freezz in the xp installation...

Now i installed the win 98 (works fine).. wonder if i could upgrade to xp after all drivers update and work in win98??!!

Something is missing here... people says that work fine with this mobo in xp... i just cant do it.

HELP ME PLS!

re: 754mlr and installing xp

The vertical lines and hang is a bug in the MS video driver for the onboard card. Change video driver to the one from PC-Chips site. The board is a pile of crap, BTW, not just because it is old. The 133 memory for some reason works at 40% of normal speed, couldn't find how to make it work normally.

re: 754mlr and installing xp

I've had the same problem on vertical lines ang hung when WinXP PRO SP2 finished its instalation and was saving the Configuration (more or less when it was about 6 - 9 minutes to finish the whole installation). I've tried with a WinXP Home SP2 and the problem was the same and at the same minute. (both were original OEM CDs, so there was no problem related with unofficial software)

After several tries happening the same, I tried installing an unofficial WinXP PRO without any SP (I think this version is around 2002). It worked! I had no problem installing it. Then I tried to update to SP2 using my original WinXP PRO SP2 and it hung with vertical lines again at the same point.

The solution was, installing a WinXP without any SP and then download WinXP SP2 from microsoft web site (260MB). I did it and it worked fine. Although the second time I rebooted, after few minutes, appeared again vertical lines while running Windows but I changed video memory size to 32MB with PCI and it seems to work, although DirectX diagnostics seems not to work very fine.

I'm trying to get another driver (I'm currently using the default driver WinXP installed - NVIDIA Alladin TNT2 (microsoft corporation) - and it really seems to be there the problem. But it's very difficult to find one!!!!!!

I'll try with this -> http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Downloads/ProductsDetail_Download.aspx?DetailID=47&DetailName=Driver&DetailDESC=M754L(V1.x)&MenuID=35&LanID=1

but don't know, we'll see....

re: 754mlr and installing xp

Hi again!

About video problems, using Nvidia Aladdin TNT2 (this one, not the one with Microsoft corporation) which comes with WinXP, and setting 32MB for video Memory on BIOS setup, seems to work quiet well. DirectX diagnostic is quite good.

Later I've downloaded from Nvidia.com the 52.16 ForceWare drivers and it seems to work well too (not too much different from the one supplied by WinXP) but when running DirectX diagnostics, screen seems to flick less.

So finally, I decided to use Nvidia 52.16 ForceWare drivers and set 32MB to video memory in BIOS settup and OnBoard AGP (although it seems that using PCI works fine too). I don't think there's too much difference between setting OnBoard AGP or PCI.

Good luck! If anybody finds a better video solution, let me now please. Thanks!

About audio driver, I had no problem to find CMI8738/C3DX PCi audio device on the net. I suppose I downloaded it from driverguide.com, but I don't remember. If you are not using modem, disable it from BIOS. It should be better although not compulsory.

re: 754mlr and installing xp

A M754LMR board with BIOS release 06/12/2002, has a 1GHz Celeron CPU. After using the button to turn of the machine, the system is running only at 667 MHz. By removing memory and IDE devices, it is working again at 1GHz after placing back memory and IDE hard disk.

I also noticed, during installing Windows XP Home with SP2, the installation hung at saving configuration process with 9 minutes to finish indication: full screen with vertical blue bands, no reaction mouse, no reaction keyboard.
After slipstreaming Xable's XP post SP2 lite update pack with nLite this problem was resolved.
