Nintendo has updated its official site with an area dedicated to Metroid Prime 2. According to the site, a sequel to Metroid Prime is in development by the company responsible for the original game, Retro Studios. Metroid Prime won GameSpot's GameCube Game of the Year award, as well as the award for 2002 Game of the Year.

NINTENDO LISTS METROID PRIME 2 FOR GAMECUBE:
As rumors float about Metroid Prime 2 being worked on for GameCube, Nintendo of America has created a game page for it, which is usually reserved for games that have been announced by the developer. This could be considered the first confirmation for the sequel. Nintendo lists the game as "Metroid Prime 2 (tentative title)" with release date "announced" and that it's being developed by Retro Studios and Nintendo. Retro and Nintendo both have expressed in interviews that they would like to release another Metroid for GCN without waiting too long.

Instead of the standard announcement message Nintendo has stated "A follow-up to the hit Metroid Prime is in development." For those wondering about the title, it's highly doubtful that Prime 2 will be part of it, but it works as a tentative title for name recognition and perhaps that it will again be played from a first person perspective. Hey, we won't be complaining about that anymore.

NEW RETRO STUDIOS PRESIDENT:
Retro Studios has a new President. Strangely enough the announcement comes out of Nintendo today. His name is Michael Kelbaugh, and he spent 15 years at Nintendo of America headquarters. There he worked in the corporate offices, and lately filled the position of director in Nintendo's business development group. Before Metroid Prime was released, all we heard about from the Texas-based studio was about trouble between them and Nintendo in the development of the game. The former president Steve Barcia apparently does not have a good reputation now. Retro is currently working on the sequel to Metroid Prime for GameCube.

METROID PRIME SEQUEL AT E3:
IGNCube reports today that the sequel to Metroid Prime will be unveiled at E3 2003. Apparently the title will not be playable, but rather will be on display in a short movie teaser. It shouldn't be that much of a let down being only in video form, since it is so early yet. But hopefully there will be more than just a few seconds like we saw for the first Metroid GCN at SpaceWorld almost three years ago. It's also being said that the developer, Retro Studios, has been working on the sequel for a few months.

This would seem true since Nintendo has already announced the games' development earlier this year and even took the time to put up a reader poll about it. It looks likely to be released in 2004, however the goal was for late in 2003. We'll keep you updated and certainly bring you the revealing of Metroid Prime 2 at E3 if this story turns out to be true.
