re: Ideas for Metroid Prime 3 |

My vision of the perfect next-gen metroid:
More beam weapons, and bring back the beam modifier system like Super Metroid had. At least 4 basic weapons (6 or 8 would be great, with a menu to configure the 4 quick-swap weapons) with at least 3 or 4 beam modifiers. Basic weapons should be Power Beam (starting weapon), Ice (slower, 50% stronger than Power beam, can freeze weakened enemies), Plasma (Twice as fast, same strength as Power Beam) and Annihalator (normal speed, twice as powerful) Each type of weapon should have a greater or lesser effect on different enemy types, with info revealed in the scanner. Modifiers should include standard (none, really), Wave (does less damage but can pass through some armor and hit multiple enemies in a line, like the old-school wave beam), Burst (slower but more powerful; has special effects, like increased chance to freeze with ice), rapid (does much less damage but fires quicker than you could thumb it and can keep a target stunned), and Multi (allows missile-style multi-targeting and splits the beam to damage all. Good for powerful weapons vs. swarms of weak enemies) Menu lets you set which 4 beams c-stick quick-selects, including ability to set a single beam to differnt positions with different modifiers. (in a lava area full of firey enemies, could have C-Left=Wave Ice and C-Right=Burst Ice, for example) The visor modes should be basically like they were in MP1; Normal/scan, thermal, xray, and there should be another, light-amp. To allow accessing all 5 directly, tapping in the direction of the currently selected visor switches to scan visor, and 'A' reverts to the previous visor. All the powerups from MP1&2 should be there, plus a few ideas of my own: I think a jetpack for flying like the gravity boost lets you do in water, except it drains power while you use it (very late-game item). Multiple planets probably isn't practical from a development standpoint but I'd like to see a large outdoor surface area done as actual terrain instead of a series of normal rooms with "skylights" and cliffs. This area could be large and extensive, and could have a vehicle mode (not a separate item but a powerup that you get to change into a vehicle) to get around on the surface more quickly late in the game. Multi-missile system should be changed to. Maybe it's just me but I think the addition of zero-g environments could be very cool, in addition to the normal & aquatic we've come to expect. There should be no ammo for beams, but there COULD be multiple kinds of missiles selected in the menu, if they really wanted. Won't have parallel light/dark worlds, but will have special portals that allow rapid travel across the world (basically like elevators, but with the last shreds of logic about spacial relationships between endpoints removed). Use of this network would require an upgrade. And most importantly of all, will not be strictly sequenced! Players should ultimately be required to collect every major powerup, but the game wouldn't try to minimize the ability to sequence-break the way that MP2 did. Some areas will require certain items, but wherever possible there should be freedom to choose the order early objectives are acheived in. This would make it in some ways like the old mega-man games, where you CAN complete the areas in (almost) any order you want, but some orders are hugely easier than others. This makes balancing more difficult, but IMO the price is more than justified in the pay-off. It could have a negative impact on the ability to build in a story progression, but IMO it wouldn't be too serious. You'll notice I haven't mentioned the story - that's because, for me, the story has never been a major part of my enjoyment of the game. So imagine this feature set applied to the story-line of your choice. One more thing I almost forgot, completing the game should have more rewards. Completing on normal: unlock hard. 100% on normal: unlock Super Metroid! (the best, imo), Complete on hard: Unlock "No Armor" mode. This also makes for a third, harder difficulty as you take more damage. This ended up being much longer than I intended, so sorry to those who hate long posts

You don't have to apologize as far as I'm concerned. I actually like a lot of your ideas. You seem to have put a lot of thought into them.

re: Ideas for Metroid Prime 3 |

Thanks; I definately have, it's something I've been thinking about since Metroid 3 on SNES. I had low expectations for Prime, and was very plesantly surprised when it came out; I would have liked to see a 3d side-scroller metroid instead, but the full-3d completely rocks. The scrolly-3D could still be great for a next-generation handheld, though.
Oh, a couple of things I left out for brevity before: The scan visor shouldn't be a separate visor, but just an overlay on any visor, so some things have to be scanned in thermal or x-ray, etc. Also, visors should still be used and togglable in the 3rd-person views, ball and screw. And some ideas for additional visors: Motion Tracker? Kindof like Sonic in that it wouldn't be very useful for getting around, but it could make enemies with extreme stealth tech visible. Ideas for additional beams: Tracker beam. Doesn't do damage at all, but enemies hit with it can be locked on to in any mode. Combined with motion tracker or other visors, can mark enemies to allow fighting them in any visor (since jumping around in sonic or motion tracker can be hazardous, because you can't really see the environment well). Also becomes even more useful combined with rapid-fire or multi-target beam modifiers. Also, would be cool if there were different suits that were alternatives instead of simple progressions; examples, a gravity suit which lets you get around under water, but doesn't protect from lava or extreme heat, and a Plasma suit which protects from heat and reduces damage but doesn't have the benefits in water. So you have to change suits depending on the environment, just like you change beams. Could be selectable in menu, or could require equipping only one suit at a time, so you have to go back to the ship to change your armor? Previously-mentioned jetpack idea could also be a special suit, rather than a universal power-up; light-weight suit with poor armor and no special resistance, but can fly around. This would help prevent the jetpack from being too overwhelmingly powerful an upgrade, since you have to choose between flying or having tough armor. Thought a bit more about the zero-g environments, and I really love the idea. In Zero-G, at first you get around with a combination of mag-rails (spiderball) and grapple beam (which, in zero-g, pulls you to the grapple point rather than making you swing, kindof like Zelda's hook-shot). Later you get mag boots (which let you walk on any surface, in zero-g, or on special magnetic surfaces, in gravity environments) and finally the jet-suit, which doesn't burn health in zero-G like it does under gravity (since it takes so little thrust to fly in zero-g). The more I think about this idea, the more I love it. Well, that's 2 long posts of features now, heh. Retro should hire me.

re: Ideas for Metroid Prime 3 |

I have a few ideas of my own. I think that switching visors in morph ball is a bad idea, because it isn't showing you samus's point of view... I do think that morph ball should become more offensive, however. Power bomb should be a quick burst of energy insted of a slow explosion, you should be able to lock on in morph ball, and perhaps even throw morph bombs at a locked on opponent (magnet bomb). I also think that you should be able to navigate the entire game (exept for some parts, like boss fights.) in your choice of first person, or morph ball. Death ball or power ball should be added in one player mode, perhaps activated by boost balling into a locked on enemy. A time travel element should be added to the storyline, so multiple samus's can play at once (co-operative multiplayer), and i'd just like to see a stealth level where samus protects her younger self from space pirates or something (maybe even just a really pissed off chozo). Screw attack should be steerable, meaning it becomes almost like another mode, infinate jumps in screw attack+ steerable= flying around invulnerable. As sweet as this sounds, to make it so this powerup doesn't automatically beat everything, it should drain health after about five jumps. Hi jump, triple jump, and gravity boost out of water should be added as well to reach samus's undoubtably higher heights. I do like that idea about anti gravity, but i'd be extreamly easy to get stuck in the middle of a room... what then if you don't have grapple beam yet? morph ball jump needs to be added to the 3-d world too, and I would really like to fly samus's gunship.

I would like to see Ridley and Kraid in this game. IMO, the story should be completely different from the 'save the planet' story we saw in MP1 and 2. IMO, a good idea would be to have Samus Aran acting like her job should force her to act. She is a BOUNTY HUNTER. Not a savior of planets. I want her to be hunting down space pirates and evilness, not killing them to save a planet

i think they should add an omega metroid or put the X in this one like in metroid fusion and they should put sa_x and they definitely will have dark samus and i think that at the end or something sa_x and dark samus should fuse
and make some really powerfull boss (there should also be more weapons like) plasma beam-should be back phazon beam-should be able to get but is different from the phazon beam in metroid prime seeker missles

I really like the idea of Samus just doing her bounty hunter job. Going to all different kinds of planets, killing vermin for the Federation, hunting certin alien leaders in powerful locations, ect. ect. then spending her well earned credits to upgrade her ship ect. ect.
But,sadly, I know this is not going to happen, because of the stupid "phazon" plot... Another good Idea is revealing more of Samuses history, mabe you could actually play al little 10 year old Samus in flashbacks!! ------------------- Books have knowledge, knowledge is power, power corrupts, corruption is a crime, and crime doesn't pay..so if you keep reading, you'll go broke

Some stuff(some probably already said)
there should be the power beam(duh), ice or some other version of it, a soundbased one(annihilator or wave), and phazon. phazon should be a normal weapon but way towards the end of the game not just on the last boss. for the morph ball there needs to be the morph ball jump like in super metroid. im still with the missles thing, i want some ice missles like in fusion and mabye phazon in MP2. visors i dont really now for sure. i really liked the dark and echo in MP2 alot so i guess they could keep those.
