I was reading regarding the characters of Silent hill from wikipedia, for joseph schreber it was written like this

An investigative journalist who was investigating the Sullivan murders and the Wish House prior to the game. Joseph is the former resident of Henry's apartment and Sullivan's 15th victim. In the beginning of the game , the player can actually control Joesph. The room has Henry's belongings and he asks where his type writer is. When he sees a picture of Henry, he asks "Who is this person?" Thus confirming you are not Henry Townshend, but Joesph Schreiber. He is killed in the beginning of the game by a ghost. All this proves he was still alive when Townshend was living in the apartment, but was trapped in the other world. He later appears in the game as a friendly ghost offering advice on how to defeat Walter. During the game, the small red notes that he left behind give insight to certain aspects, and in some cases tips to defeat powerful enemies; for example in one case he left behind a note stating that Holy Candles and Saint Medallions could weaken them dramatically, as well as Dispel Hauntings. Over time, it is revealed through his notes that Joseph was imprisoned in room 302 much like Henry was, and at some point he went mad and was killed. There was a reference to him in Silent Hill 3 where Joseph's "Wish House" article was found by Heather at the 1st floor of Brookhaven hospital, saying she "knows that place from somewhere."

At the begining of the game it was just a dream or we were playing as joseph

First of all, we must ensure Joseph is the devil. How we do that? Every murder had a theme, and Joseph was number 15 (despair). according to Tarot, victim number 15 would represent the Devil, a manipulative, aggreassive and deceitful man. according to the same fact, he was killed whilst his card was upside down (when he had to admit his hopes were false and that he wouldn't have a chance for surviving Walter's attack). But as is, the devil can act freely, even against God's will (that's why Joseph wasn't turned into a victim-ghost that could harm Henry); but, even against Devil's will, God was using that nature of Devil to make him reveal facts of all what happened to the victim 21 (Henry: The Reciever of Wisdom/The World). That way Henry would actually recieve wisdom, as was necesarry to prepare him for the sacrifice, so actually this Devil wasn't acting with an inverted pentagram, as the Tarot states in the card, but this one acts according to a straight pentagram (the "good" pentagram) as he was acting according to what "God" wanted.

According to that theory, the only way Henry could have that nightmare was by Joseph inducing it as a way to give him wisdom. So, I'll infere that we actually use Joseph at the beginning of the game, as he showed him what happened in the past.

By the way: If Walter is the "Giver of Wisdom", then it's msafe to assume that he was also controlling Joseph to a certain point, so by means of Joseph he could give wisdom to Henry. Yes, if he wished he could make Joseph teach algebra to Henry, if Joseph was totally under his control.

We can compare this to christianity: Devil can do bad things to us and make us do things by many means because God allows him to do that, so humans can learn what's good and what's wrong, and thus lest the humans get closer to Devil. The only difference is that Walter wanted Henry to learn things from Joseph instead of making Henry fear Joseph

By the way, I treated Walter as the god of his own world, so when you read "God" on this message you are free to change it to "Walter".

hmm, that is interesting, as a 5-yrs silent hill gamer, I've learned something new about the tarot stuff. and yeah, we were playing as Joseph Schreiber in the beginning and it is so obvious lol. either or Henry must have a nightmare about Joseph's fate since it was like Joseph made an imprint in that room 302, ya know? Or like Cynthia, Henry might have been in Joseph's "dream" while Joseph's still alive in "The Other World".

remember how Eileen feels a bit strange about "The Other World" and makes a questioned statement, "I wonder if Joseph is still alive?" when you guys were in the subway for the second time?

anythings that r possibilities happened in silent hill or the haunted room, after all, its silent hill and will always have unanswered questions or unexplained secrets. XD
