DVD Rom Drive not reading certain games |
|
Lately, my DVD Rom drive has had no luck whatsoever reading certain games I own. I pop the disc in, wait for about 10 minutes, and no luck. I check into My Computer and according to my computer, there is no disc in the drive period. It's like my computer cannot even recognize these discs at all.
The games that I have so far that my computer will not read are: Bioshock, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Neverwinter Nights 2. So, I have recently run a series of tests to find out what the problem is and here are my results: 1) It is not the discs at all. Not only are they spotless, but I have put them into other computers and they ran fine. 2) It is something about my computer. My brother has the exact same specs, OS, and DVD Rom drive as me and those exact games do not work on his computer either. 3) The games used to work. All three of these games have once before worked on my computer, quite a while ago actually. They used to work perfectly fine and infact I even managed to beat Bioshock and Call of Duty 4 (I almost beat Neverwinter Nights 2). So this proves that my disc drive is very well capable and compatible with running these games; it just randomly stopped eventually. 4) As far as condition goes, my disc drive looks fine. I mean, there are no dents in it nor does it have ANY trouble whatsoever opening and closing. Not only that, but internally my computer looks absolutely fine so I doubt the problem is anything physical. Also, these are the ONLY games that don't work on my computer as of now. The rest run fine with no problems whatsoever (and yes, most of the ones that work are DVD Rom games). 5) I have tried updating my disc drive through Device Manager as well as uninstalling/reinstalling the device and neither of them had any effect. Please read all of those results before suggesting anything because I really have exhausted many options including the ones above. I may plan on buying an external/new DVD Rom drive but judging by the problem I would say that my drive has nothing to do with it... Here is a copy of my DxDiag Any help would be WELL appreciated, thanks! ------------------- Read my blog on a very pressing matter if you want to live...Reading it yet? Now...? NOW?!

I had this problem with WarCraft 2 in my old CD-ROM drive. I had to reinsert the disc about 20 to 50 times before it eventually read the disc, at which point everything went fine. I eventually got tired of it and replaced the drive. Worked fine from then on.
I think it has to do with the strip around the center of the disc, around the hole. What could be happening is that the LED laser that is used to read your discs is failing to read highly encrypted or (in my case) old-style discs. The center strip is for piracy protection, I think. You can replace the laser, so don't think you'll need to buy an entirely new drive. Call up the manufacturer.
