Who's managed to do 100 super jumps legitimately? My record is 32. It seems like the timing changes out of the blue, seeing as Mario will stop at some point despite me keeping the same rhythm.

That is definetly the one thing I can not do..

I dunno how anyone can do 100..

my best is like 40 or something... i really want the super-suit, but it seems impossible to do. I keep my timing the same, but eventually you stop jumping on them

Super Suit is just ultimate piece of equipment. In no way required to finish the game, however, it's highly desired by players that have.

After Mario learns Super Jump at level six, you can attempt the challenge. However, you won't be able to claim either reward (you get an accessory if you perform at least 30 consecutive jumps) until you speak with someone in Monstro Town. That's about 3/5 of the way into the game.

I don't think I ever attempted to try and get this. If I remember correctly, my record is somewhere between 15 and 20. How anyone can get more than that is beyond me.
