simple, your game is badly stratched. You can use a 100 cotton cloth (like a hanky) and achohol free cleaner, and spray it down. Do strait wipes, from the center out, to clean it, and 12 wipes should do it. Leave it to dry, 10 min... and try again.

If that doesn't work then return it to sgea, if under warranty, or give it to the Game Doctor.

I had this problem too. You know what fixed it? Changing discs. So, if you're playing the DC version and you're still using disc 1, that's your problem. You should probably change the disc just as you enter the papal state the second time. If you're on the pc version... I have no idea.
